My dad wanted to book a room from well known E&O Hotel but was fully booked. So my dad booked this hotel. It's kind of comfortable and simple here. But I think the hotel lobby and Breakfast buffet place is kinda small for the number of ppl staying in the hotel. Anyway, the location of this hotel is the best, there's a shopping mall called 1st Avenue located just beside the hotel. If u interested in high class hotel , I suggest u guys to check at G Hotel , which is located beside Gurney Plaza.

i had a good stay.

the bed was nice comfy and they gave extra pillows!
the hotel was near to a mall so its pretty convenient.
like others before me who mentioned, there is also a nice komtar building, tallest building in penang so you might want to check it out.
transport wise its penang so its best to take a cab to places anyway.

point to note, to watch out for the penang traffic as it can be pretty hectic.
i happen to witness a hit and run while i was there!

Working in an industry that actually designs hotels for a living, I know that the Traders brand is the Shangri-la hotel chain's 'value for money' line. Meaning, simpler, comfortable but less luxurious, and maybe a bit bland. This Trader's Hotel in George Town, Penang, in particular, feels like it went out of its way to be as generic and unmemorable as possible. The receptionists at the lobby were friendly and efficient but that was it. The rooms were large and comfortable, bed was OK, service was slightly above average.

Location is excellent, smack dab in the middle of George Town, short walk to everything you would want to see.

Bathrooms were large, fixtures were modern but simple (again, being somebody who actually designs hotels, I hate those new bathroom fixtures that look super sleek and modern but don't work well and are hard to figure out... you scald yourself with hot water before you find out that small button actually mixes hot and cold together...).

The hotel had a pool deck on the 4th floor, with two tiny pools, one for kids. I wanted to swim but they were too small to get a good workout in. I suppose that is fine as I did not book this hotel for the pool.

Mini-bar was well stocked, amenities included pot, coffee, tea, complimentary mineral water, hair dryer.

In short, everything you could expect from a 4-star hotel is here. Except character. Or a sense of place. You are in Penang, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You walk the streets of George Town and you feel transported back to the turn of the 19th century. You are shocked (in a gentle, 4-star way) back to reality when you go back to this hotel. Even the architecture of the hotel is so modern as to stand out from Penang's well-preserved streetscape.

Final verdict: Go to this hotel if you want comfort in a cocoon of modernity. You will get good value for your money. But if you went to Penang / George Town to experience the spirit of the place, then spend as little time in this hotel as possible. Get out there, get on the streets, take your camera with you. You won't regret it.

Room Tip: High rooms are pretty sunny... and 'sunny' can take a whole new meaning when in Penang.

Trader's HOTEL GeorgeTown formerly the Shangri La group of hotels is located right smack in the midst of GeorgeTown.
We had booked a Club Room with Dual Beds and non smoking preferences as indicated on our online Reservation Booking. however this wasn't entertained till the next Day. But the Concierge services at the Traders Lounge makes up for their Shortcomings by offering alternatives, and being genuinely apologetic. Very Strict with Checkout and noticed they have deactivated my Room Door keys 10 mins before official Checkout time.Wifi Connectivity is also an issue as some of us had difficulty in accessing the given passwords and User IDs. Concierge Services once again came to our rescue to ensure Connectivity.Hotels Glitches are made up for by Well mannered and adequate staff NeverthLess.

Room Tip: Club Room Bookings made via Online Confirmation for Smoking preferences are not strictly adhered to...

The Traders is fairly conveniently placed in Georgedown - it's next to the Komtar, the tallest building in Penang, which is a good landmark if you're walking around. However, there's not much reason to walk around the environs of the Traders - at the moment the surroundings are fairly non-descript - lots of busy roads, a building site opposite, and a monumental mall. It's not much of a walk into the more pleasant parts of Georgetown (Armenian Street is about a 15 minute walk away); it's not as if Penang is an enormous city. However, we were here on holiday and therefore our tolerance for wandering around may have been higher than if you were in a rush to be somewhere.

Service was very good - all the staff, from check in to the club lounge to the breakfast in the Islander Cafe in the mornings were friendly and genuinely helpful. I left my sunglasses in a taxi one day, and the hotel managed to track the driver down and get him to return the sunglasses, even though I failed to inform anyone for 24 hours. Pretty pleased by that.

The club lounge also gives you as much coffee as you can drink and as many croissants as you can eat - a useful facility. I'm not sure about the condition of the non-club floors, but our room was spacious enough and had a decent bathroom. Wi-fi was free (hurrah!) so no complaints there either. Soundproofing is good too. We were here over Divali, and the fireworks weren't at all disturbing (just a few phut-phut noises with every detonation, nothing to interrupt your sleep).

Downsides: it's a little bit antiseptic, but I assume that's the case for any large, high-end hotel in Penang. If you want something more authentic, you'll want to seek out something a bit smaller. Although they've invested in large flatscreen tvs, there's very little to watch on them. There is a DVD player in the room, so if you'd brought DVDs on holiday you could watch those (but do you know anyone who packs DVDs in their suitcase?). Breakfast is adequate rather than incredible, but fairly priced.

Room Tip: Go for the club floors (16 & 17)

On our bi-annual trip to Penang we have a few days at Traders Hotel in the heart of George Town before heading out to Feringgi Beach and the Golden Sands Resort.
We stay at Traders Hotel for a few nights so that we can experience the charm of this Heritage Listed city.
Traders Hotel is central to all the places of interest and shopping. Being of the Shangri-La group we find the Hotel of the very best of comfort and can't praise enough the attentiveness and friendliness of the staff. From front desk to housekeeping we were always acknowledged and greeted with friendly smiles.
Well done Traders Hotel. Can't wait to come back again in May 2013

This hotel is next door to a large shopping mall and transport exchange, so for those not wanting to drive, it is really convenient. The reception staff will organise day and half day tours for your too. We had our breakfasts and several dinners in their fine restaurant.
