The Traders is fairly conveniently placed in Georgedown - it's next to the Komtar, the tallest building in Penang, which is a good landmark if you're walking around. However, there's not much reason to walk around the environs of the Traders - at the moment the surroundings are fairly non-descript - lots of busy roads, a building site opposite, and a monumental mall. It's not much of a walk into the more pleasant parts of Georgetown (Armenian Street is about a 15 minute walk away); it's not as if Penang is an enormous city. However, we were here on holiday and therefore our tolerance for wandering around may have been higher than if you were in a rush to be somewhere.
Service was very good - all the staff, from check in to the club lounge to the breakfast in the Islander Cafe in the mornings were friendly and genuinely helpful. I left my sunglasses in a taxi one day, and the hotel managed to track the driver down and get him to return the sunglasses, even though I failed to inform anyone for 24 hours. Pretty pleased by that.
The club lounge also gives you as much coffee as you can drink and as many croissants as you can eat - a useful facility. I'm not sure about the condition of the non-club floors, but our room was spacious enough and had a decent bathroom. Wi-fi was free (hurrah!) so no complaints there either. Soundproofing is good too. We were here over Divali, and the fireworks weren't at all disturbing (just a few phut-phut noises with every detonation, nothing to interrupt your sleep).
Downsides: it's a little bit antiseptic, but I assume that's the case for any large, high-end hotel in Penang. If you want something more authentic, you'll want to seek out something a bit smaller. Although they've invested in large flatscreen tvs, there's very little to watch on them. There is a DVD player in the room, so if you'd brought DVDs on holiday you could watch those (but do you know anyone who packs DVDs in their suitcase?). Breakfast is adequate rather than incredible, but fairly priced.
