“our home in Georgetown”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2013

A great place to stay in the heart of the heritage area, clean and comfortable accommodation, friendly and efficient service, attention to detail, scrumptious food and just a short walk or trishaw ride to many interesting sites around the city, quaint cafes and restaurants, museums, temples. The best way to explore for us was just to walk around the narrow streets and lanes and admire the preservation and restorations works on the temples and colonial shophouses turned into inns, hotels, cafes, small museums, shops and what have you. It was our first time in Penang and we would love to have a longer stay on our next visit. thanks Coffee Atelier for a memorable experience.

Room Tip: The stairs going up the second floor rooms are narrow and claustrophobic so a good tip would be to c...

It was my first time staying in town, even though we come to Penang often. Most of the the visits we stayed at Tanjung Bungah. Well, it is truly a great experience staying here. The place is wonderful, clean, spacious, good location, convenient and the people are friendly too. The breakfast is fantastic, we have bacon for b'fast and not to mention the restaurant serves the best food in town. We wake up at 7am and we walked the streets. The tourist spots are just walking distance
. We visited Chow Resta Market, and it brings back good memories when I was a kid. Just the good old days!

Those looking for a place to stay in the heritage area would be wise to choose Coffee Atelier. The location is a fantastic starting point to explore Georgetown's old houses, temples and mosques. There are many small cafes, street food vendors and convenience stores around the corner. The building was carefully restored inside and out maintaining its character. The rooms are spacious and comfortable with very good wifi connection. The bathroom is big and open air so you hear the birds while bathing in the morning. The food and coffee at the cafe are excellent. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: If you are on the large side choose a room on the ground floor so you do not have difficulty going u...

Lovely place to relax & watch the world go by. It's a beautiful cafe with an art gallery next door. They used to roast their own coffee beans here & you can see the room out back where this was done. They also have rooms here which look beautiful, but didn't stay in them.

For the travellers who want to enjoy the relaxing old day’s atmosphere in Georgetown without missing comfort and style, the Coffee Atelier is the perfect place to stay and dine. Thanks to Stefan Gehrig and his wife Lorina, these five interlinked “shophouses” (from 1927) at Steward Line 55 have been brought back to life thanks to a carefully managed mix between preservation and restoration. Stefan’s other passions are photography, arts and – well, coffee. What a great way to wake up in the morning! Birds are singing in the Peranakan-style backyard, the art gallery just next door, and the smell from coffee-roasting from that original wood-fired oven and its roasting equipment is still in the air.

My wife and I went to Penang with another couple and had booked two nights at the Coffee Atelier for a weekend trip. Having read many reviews about the place and seen the photos, I was really excited about our stay and I hoped that my high expectations would not be disappointed. Fortunately, we ended up having a great time!

The Coffee Atelier consists of five old Chinese shop houses next to each other - two have two suites each, one has a little gallery, one has the reception / greeting area and the corner one hosts the actual café which would also be the place where we had breakfast.

We had initially booked the two upstairs suites (in two houses next to each other) but switched to occupy a full house for ourselves. The suites have all the necessary amenities without destroying the charm of the old shop houses - this means that you do have AC, fans, a flatscreen TV (never used - why would you need this in Penang?), a fridge etc but the paint on the wall or the wooden stairs was left in its original style. The furniture was early 20th century Chinese style, the bed was super comfortable and the bathrooms were wide and open.

Our breakfast was delicious and we did enjoy the coffee a lot.

We enjoyed our stay in Penang a lot and having the Coffee Atelier as a base was just perfect due to its central location and the friendly staff. We ended up having drinks at the end of the night in front of our house and were very glad we explored this beautiful spot for a weekend.

cool lime juice from charming Ruby Lynn upon arrival ... Beautifully presented clean and comfortable rooms, roomy bathroom, generous breakfast and lovely people. Just a stroll from Little India, Cheong Fatz Zee mansion and the waterfront etc etc. Great restaurant and cafe too. You gotta stay here. (Traveling with my adult daughter). Another nice feature was the cotton bathrobes and good coffee in the rooms.
