“Peaceful, clean, helpful”

In the heart of little India you are in the thick of it all. Hostel is elevated and off the road it is secure and staff very helpful. It is a peaceful place to stay and not much hostel atmosphere but a nice place to stay nonetheless

Great location, right in the middle of little India - loads of restaurants and food stalls around. Walking distance to all of Georgetown's sights, and the bus stations which link to everywhere on the island. The bedrooms were spotless, nicely decorated and newly refurbished. The shared bathroom had plenty of showers (never had to wait) and was regularly cleaned - it was immaculate throughout the whole day!
We used the laundry service which was really quick, got our clean clothes back the same day. The rooms come with dvd players and there's loads of dvds to borrow!
Really safe too, there was always someone on reception in the day and the external door was locked at 7pm. For such a clean and modern guesthouse it was great value, and cheaper than other places in Georgetown!
Highly recommended!!

We really liked to location in Little India in Georgetown. It is close to restaurants, shops, and transport. The staff was very helpful in getting around Penang and spoke English well. The rooms were comfortable, with tv's to watch movies and aircon. My only complaints would be similar to others posted here- that the rooms are kind of loud because of the old wood floors so I would recommend a room on the first floor if you can. The showers were typical for Asia, not bothered by those and had no problem changing in them like some others have said. We did have trouble waking up in the morning because the room didn't have a window, but it's an old building, not much they can do about that. I would recommend the place for travelers who want friendly staff and peace, quiet, and comfort.

We stayed at the Cocoa Mews only a month after they had opened, and even though the guesthouse is shiny and new, we didn’t enjoy our stay there very much.

The two young owners were very friendly and helpful, provided us with a map of Georgetown and pointed out all the major attractions to us. The guesthouse is located on Queen Street right in the heart of Little India – we loved the location and all the cheap Indian restaurants around there.

Cocoa Mews is a renovated heritage house, and they did a great job renovating the house. However, the disadvantages of a heritage building showed quickly: the wooden floors are incredibly noisy and when the guests in the room above ours moved around, it sounded like a herd of elephants running through the house. We had no idea what was going on upstairs, but it was so noisy that we barely could sleep. We actually had to ask to change rooms the next day, which luckily we were able to do.

We liked our second room much better, also because it actually had windows and looked out to the street, whereas most of the other rooms do NOT have windows.

The internet worked well, and each room comes with a little TV and there are many DVDs in the lobby. All the rooms have air-conditioning – much needed in Penang’s heat! But the blanket on the bed was a thick woolen blanket – a thin linen sheet would make much more sense, because first of all it is too hot for a woolen blanket and second, it is just not comfortable to sleep under a scratchy woolen sheet.

What I didn’t like at all was that I couldn’t wear my own shoes in the house – I understand that many places in Malaysia have a strict no-shows policy, but usually you can wear your own shoes when there are shared showers & bathrooms. Cocoa Mews has shared bathrooms, and they actually provide some flip flops in front of the toilet. However, I am not a big fan of sharing shoes with anyone, neither a fan of showering WITHOUT shoes in a shared space. What was also not ideal was that the showers are located behind the reception area, which meant I had to walk by the staff (and other guests) in my towels every time, since there was NO room in the shower to change my clothes (without getting them wet).

We spent a month in Malaysia and stayed in several hotels and guesthouses in that time, but for a guesthouse comparable to the Cocoa Mews we usually paid MYR50 – here we paid MYR100 for a double room, which I just find VERY overpriced.

Had an excellent stay here for a few days. Looi and Wan were extremely helpful and always good natured. They helped us plan our time in Georgetown

The rooms are very clean and nicely sized. For our first night we had a room with a window on the street. We moved to an interior room because of the street noise and not because there is an abbatoir across the road (as the first review says). There is a big difference between an abbatoir and a butchery and there are no unpleasant sites.

Cocoa is well located for exploring Georgetown and is in easy walking distance of most of the sites.

The only negative with our stay was leaving. We booked our onward journey to Singapore through Cocoa. The bus company we used (newsia) were not very good and didn't explain that we would only be deposited on the edge of Singapore.

Other than that, very recommended.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the street.

This hostel/guesthouse has all the qualities that are important to me when I'm traveling. While not super flashy (but I'm not sure anything on Penang is?) the place is impeccably maintained and is situated in the historic heart of the town. Given how hot and humid it can be in Penang it was great to stay in a place that has legitimate A/C. The showers too are really nice compared to typical backpackers place. I can't speak for those who want to stay in a private room, but if you're a backpacker and you want a quiet spot to get some rest and relax this is your place. Also, the hosts seem like pretty good people, they were able to answer all my questions about the island and helped me book onward transportation.
