“Disappointing experience”

We went in for lunch last week expecting to enjoy food of a high calibre seeing that the restaurant is located in Straits Quay which is an upper market location in Penang.
Sadly,we were disappointed. The spaghetti dishes tasted
Ike they used the sauces straight out of the bottle.the garlic bread came out looking like it was a frozen product all heated up.
We would have done better cooking them ourselves with stuff from the supermarket.

Our first and last visit to this so called authentic Italian restaurant.

“Expected better”

Tested out this restaurant with family after reading all these reviews. I figured someone have to be realistic for the prices charged. It is not over the top but by Penang Italian restaurant it is about 20% more . We ordered the smoke duck,aglio olio,rocket balsamic salad,alfunghi pizza ,focaccia bread and all to be shared among three of us. The reviewer were right about the duck it was fabulous especially pairing them with the beet root. The pasta aglio was just normal but the Rocket salad was poor , there was too much cheese and the rockets were tough partly I guess from the fact that the veg itself was too mature as it all became all chewy and to make things worse the stems were also thrown in and we had to sort as we went through the salad the leaves from the stem. There were also some which were clearly bruised and have turned brown. The pizza was average and the crust was thin but lacks crispness . Service wise it was good however I would have expected the captain or the chef to come over to apologies for the salad, since we made it clear to the waiter that he must let the chef know about the expiring rockets. Would I go back? Maybe because of the location and the extensive wine list.

“Another disappointment.”

I am quite familiar with Italian food, as I am part Italian, lived in an Italian neighborhood in NY and Boston and have visited Italy a number of times. When I first saw that it was pork free my expectations were not too high. The chicken sausages and ham were tasteless. No typical Italian spices. The pizza looked good, but wa not better than what could be found at hawker stalls. The service was not that good and not friendly. The prices were way too high for the quality of food. I am surprised to see the number of high ratings. Obviously these people had no good Italian food experiences as a comparison.

“Good standard for penang,but not the greatest.very good service though”

Just came back from dinner there.decided to go after reading the reviews.good ambience,very good service by intelligent phillipino staff.the food on a whole was ok,pizza wasnt wow,but wasn't bad.the main chef wasn't there.the meat limitations on the pizza are all processed meats which isn't nice at all really.pricey,but the setting is why the prices are so high.overall I think it gives the other pizza restaurants in penang a go, but they can do much better.look out for the waiter Rolly,he is switched on.

“The Best Pizza In The World- Seriously!!”

Ingredients are the most important things to making a great pizza and at Spasso Milano you get the best pizza in the world.
If you imagine getting on a plane and flying to Italy, home of the pizza, and driving to a pizzeria in say Naples, supposed birthplace of the pizza, you could not find a more authentic or better produced pizza. You most certainly would not find it any cheaper.
So imagine my surprise when I found that you can get the best pizza in the world with ingredients sourced from Italy at a cheaper price than you would pay in Italy in Straits Quay, Penang.
Wherever you go in the world you will find a pizza restaurant or an Italian restaurant serving pizza but how many of them are genuine Italian pizzas.
Pizza should be baked in a wood fired oven. Pizza should have Mozzarella Cheese and homemade tomato sauce, 'just like mamma used to make'. At Spasso Milano you get just this.
The pizza dough is made by hand freshly every day. Good quality flour rich in glutens (the stuff that makes it sticky and elastic!) mixed with water, oil and ??? sugar???. Left to prove then separated into individual portion size ball ready for rolling as and when the orders roll in.
The sauce is made from skinned and seeded fresh tomatoes that are gently heated through with finely diced onions, garlic and infused with herbs.
The cheese is Mozzarella, nothing less will do.
These above ingredients make up the basis for the most simple of pizzas, the margarita with just the decoration to be added of fresh locally grown basil leaves. The aroma of the basil wafts up and sets the taste buds a tingle before you even get to smell the freshly baked dough, tomato sauce and cheese.
This is also, without the basil, the basis for just about every pizza.
My personal favorite, and let’s be honest the beauty with pizza is that there are infinite combinations to suit any taste, is the Neapolitan. Pizza with anchovy (love 'em or hate 'em) and capers, my dream pizza.
We watched and listened to Chef Felice, who having been raised in Milano in Northern Italy knows a thing or three about pizza, showed us the right way to make pizza.
After an illustrious career working in Italy Felice moved onto work in the Maldives?? for a few years and then went onto Phuket, Thailand.
It was from there that he finally moved down to Malaysia to open Spasso Milano in KL 2 years ago. The first restaurant was very well received but to be honest just not in the right area. Spasso Milano was opened last year at Straits Quay, Penang and only last month the KL Spasso was moved to Pavilion where it is going from strength to strength.
This keeps Felice very busy with 2 locations, 2 kitchens, and 2 sets of chefs to control but this native Italian takes it all in his stride.
Spasso Milano has much more to offer than Pizza but as I said in the introduction this really is the best Pizza I have ever had in the world. So if you fancy some world class pizza, get down to Spasso Milano in Straits Quay or if you are heading to KL you can try it there on the 6th Floor of Pavilion.
