“The reality is different than the website!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2012

I was intrigued from the website, as it looked like a cool stay, but the reality was totally different! There were a number of issues-
1. Safety
As a single woman, I honestly did not feel safe-the bathroom was on a balcony with wide slats between the shades (anyone would be able to see through at night when the bath light was on), I had to lock the door from the bath balcony to the bedroom as I thought it would be perfectly easy for someone to climb up to the balcony, and the main entrance to the building was very dark and there was no one around (the caretaker was across the street for day business hours only.) The lock on the door to my room was a literal padlock which felt weird and a bit creepy.
2. Noise
We all know that scooters are ubiquitous in Penang but Bangkok Lane where Dwell is located is a cross street between two busy streets so scooters love to speed through, so there is a constant loud ZOOM. But this is the noise of speeding motorists, not the cheerful buzz of a busy street in the heritage district where people are out and about and having dim sum and what have you. The glass windows are not even remotely soundproofed.
3. Aesthetics
The photos on the website are taken at clever angles to make the rooms look cool and inviting, but in reality, they are mostly reminiscent of a 1960s hotel room from a Hitchcock film-dated and wholly uninviting. Granted, things were clean, but if you are looking for these kinds of budget prices, then just stay at one of the cool backpacker places on Muntri Street like MoonTree47 where there is actually some life and buzz-a cute cafe with lots of cheeriness and staff who are happy to help you with any queries.
4. Location
Keep in mind that Bangkok Lane is a
good $15 cab ride or time consuming bus ride from downtown. There is a Burmese Temple and the interesting Paluk Tikkas Market nearby, but other than that there are no places to wander around other than somewhat homogenous strip malls and closed in residential areas.

I would say that Dwell Suites by Palanquinn are for people who want to stay in Penang on a budget and want to be utterly left alone, can overlook the forlorn feel and look of the place and don't mind having to chug along on the bus or pay for a cab to get downtown to the interesting heritage district. The whole place felt quite desolate, and well, quite depressing.

This hotel utilizes a nice heritage building on a lovely street full of them. My flight was delayed and I called them to let them know. They left the key for me with all their instructions. The room was nice but the bathroom felt like it was outside and the quality was lower than that of the room. During rain, and that is often in Penang, the sounds made on the corrugated roofs was overwhelming. They don't do breakfast but you can get an excellent one just around the corner on Burma Rd. Money changers and ATMs are also there.

We stayed in the PalanquInn and Dwell Loft Suites for 5 and 9 days respectively. The units in both houses are clean and comfortable within a traditional style environment.
Bangkok Lane is a one-way Street and therefore not as busy as we had expected. On the contrary it was fairly quiet in the evening and during the night; in addition, the Muezzin call for prayer every few hours gave an almost romantic feel. Close by are food outlets galore dishing up cheap and tasty meals that reflect the diversity of the ethnic groups in Penang. A supermarket that stocks Western Food (amongst other things) is also within walking distance.

We used the public buses on an almost daily basis. They are cheap and frequent with easy access to Georgetown and other parts of Penang. Make sure though to have the exact fare on hand. No change is given. It takes about 10 Minutes to get from the suburb of Pulau Tikus to George Town.

George Town itself offers a wealth of experience and if you love being exposed to varieties of - food, history and peoples, you have come to the right place.

The staff at PalanquInn were helpful and friendly, making our stay enjoyable.

I was really excited when I checked Palanquinn out online and via the reviews. However, when I arrived, I was quite unimpressed with what I saw. It was definitely not worth the RM220 per night. My mezzanine room was on the latest property of Palanquinn on 20 Bangkok Lane, just opposite the original Dwell suites. The room smelt musty and old. The decor was bland and really basic, quite unlike the pictures shown on their website. The bathroom didn't come with a bath mat, which can get annoying having to walk around the room with wet feet. Another gripe was the RM15 they charged for breakfast, which they stated as a matter of fact that it is not cooked by them but are all local street food bought from a market nearby. Discerning travellers would know that Penang street food costs a fraction of what they're charging, so this put me off quite a bit. Overall, it felt like I was staying at a very basic budget hotel, which would have been fine by me if not for the amount they charged per room.

Had a great time even though I was only there for one night for a brief stopover. Georgetown is a lovely place and this place was just as lovely. My room was quite large and I had a ceiling fan (Air Con is available as well) which I was grateful for because I don't like AC.

I stayed here in May 2012 - the place is lovely and comfortable. It was clean and was an authentic experience staying in a shop house. Some gripes were that the open bath room could be cleaner and slippers provided as it could get dirty or wet. I am a light sleeper and staying on the 2nd floor, I could hear all the traffic and conversations on the street. The owner was away when I was there, there was a kind Indonesian lady who assisted but due to a miscomm (her english is basic), she woke me at 6am when I'd asked her twice for a taxi transfer at 6pm.
I wouldn't return because of the noise level and sleep is impt to me but otherwise it was ok.

Its in a really convenient area, 10 minutes walk to the shopping centre. I recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to visit the beautiful Island, It's worth every penny.
