I was intrigued from the website, as it looked like a cool stay, but the reality was totally different! There were a number of issues-
As a single woman, I honestly did not feel safe-the bathroom was on a balcony with wide slats between the shades (anyone would be able to see through at night when the bath light was on), I had to lock the door from the bath balcony to the bedroom as I thought it would be perfectly easy for someone to climb up to the balcony, and the main entrance to the building was very dark and there was no one around (the caretaker was across the street for day business hours only.) The lock on the door to my room was a literal padlock which felt weird and a bit creepy.
We all know that scooters are ubiquitous in Penang but Bangkok Lane where Dwell is located is a cross street between two busy streets so scooters love to speed through, so there is a constant loud ZOOM. But this is the noise of speeding motorists, not the cheerful buzz of a busy street in the heritage district where people are out and about and having dim sum and what have you. The glass windows are not even remotely soundproofed.
The photos on the website are taken at clever angles to make the rooms look cool and inviting, but in reality, they are mostly reminiscent of a 1960s hotel room from a Hitchcock film-dated and wholly uninviting. Granted, things were clean, but if you are looking for these kinds of budget prices, then just stay at one of the cool backpacker places on Muntri Street like MoonTree47 where there is actually some life and buzz-a cute cafe with lots of cheeriness and staff who are happy to help you with any queries.
Keep in mind that Bangkok Lane is a good $15 cab ride or time consuming bus ride from downtown. There is a Burmese Temple and the interesting Paluk Tikkas Market nearby, but other than that there are no places to wander around other than somewhat homogenous strip malls and closed in residential areas.
I would say that Dwell Suites by Palanquinn are for people who want to stay in Penang on a budget and want to be utterly left alone, can overlook the forlorn feel and look of the place and don't mind having to chug along on the bus or pay for a cab to get downtown to the interesting heritage district. The whole place felt quite desolate, and well, quite depressing.
