“Nice staff and clean rooms”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013 via mobile

We stayed here for three nights and enjoyed it very much. The staff are friendly and helpful and the room we stayed in was clean and quite. The location is perfect if you want to explore the beautiful old town. We highly recommend this place!

If you're in Georgetown go see Penang hill, it's nice for a couple hours. 2 nights is the MOST you need in town. Great Indian food nearby, and some fun street food as well. Wifi is free, but you don't get a signal in the rooms. Nice hotel.

Chulia heritage hotel is a great place to stay if you want to see Penang. We found Penang a bit disappointing and would recommend staying in this city for 3 days tops! (My partner is saying 2 would be more than enough)

Chulia pros:
-very clean
-newer flatscreen TV with movie channels
-rainfall shower head!

Cons:
-the Main Street is a little sketchy (but most are in Penang)
-no restaurant or breakfast in Chulia ( lots of Malay food nearby but sometimes it's nice to have eggs and toast)
-no wifi signal in our room
-room was very thinly insulated and noisy
-there was a window to the lobby that brought in light all night, no way to cover it

A small hotel located in the historic Chinatown precinct of Georgetown. Friendly and helpful staff. The room was very small and had the basic amenities. No restaurant facilities for meals but plenty of eateries nearby.

A group of us had wanted to take a 3D/2N trip to Penang to watch and photograph the Thaipusam festival. One of my friends had suggested Chulia Heritage as it was close to Little India where the chariot procession would begin as well as near amenities. The entrance to the hotel is inconspicuous as it is "hidden" in a long driveway from the main road (tip #1 - it is closer to Penang Road).
I had a superior bedroom with a queen size bed and an attached toilet (tip #2 - all attached bathroom rooms are situated on the ground floor of this 2 storey "colonial" building. The rooms on the top floor have to share a common bathroom.
The layout was of the room was okay but the bathroom was a little "squeezy" with the basin, shower and wc all within a foot away from each other that when one takes a shower, the entire bathroom becomes a "wet zone". Also, the hot shower did not seem to work although I did not raise this with the hotel staff as it was quite hot outside.
The hotel lobby is non air-conditioned and can become quite hot in the afternoons. Rooms that are on either side of the reception counter may have to endure some noise from the lobby area as well as the common wooden floor on the top floor. I stayed in room #113 which was away from the counter and did not get any disturbances.
On the 2nd day, I had to wait till 5pm for the room to be tidied up as it seems that they were "short-handed" on cleaning staff.
Amenities wise, it is conveniently located within walking distance to coffee shops, markets, pubs and local attractions (such as Armenian Street). We did not take any public transport or taxis as we had a pre-arranged transport (RM300/day for a minivan) to bring us around that might be suitable for a group.
All in all, it was a pleasant stay minus a few "distractions".

Set back from Chulia street, the hotel is very well located for being able to tour the best that fascinating Georgetown has to offer - and there is a lot to see. The hotel is bright, airy and spotlessly clean. On arrival we were greeted by the reception staff and made to feel most welcome.

We booked a superior (?) room with an en suite bathroom. This is where it went wrong for us as we (2 pretty regular UK adults) had been on tour for some weeks and also had 2 good sized suitcases with us.

As we stepped into our room, it was instantly clear that it was not large enough for us and our cases for a 5 night stay. So I'm afraid that we chickened out and decided to rebook up at the beach on Batu Ferringhi Beach. I'm really sorry for the Chulia as it was our choice and nothing that should reflect on them.

I would also add that the en suite shower arrangement was quite 'special' as it was effectively a wet room arrangement, but I'm not sure that I would have been too happy with that after a while either.

Hi, i was there for 3d2n. What i can tell you is the hotel is beautiful, clean and you will feel bright and gold. The rooms are good. You can sleep well because it is not in front of the main road. So you wont hear the traffic. The staff are great and kindhearted especially Anna. She was very helpful. Thanks Chulia. Its like stay at 4 star hotel but pay for a motel. I definitely will come back!

Room Tip: Choose ground floor because upper floor are with wooden floor.
