“Good, comfy dorm rooms, bathrooms need improving.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013

The upstairs hallway area is calm and quiet, although it could do with some aircon as its very hot up there with just fans. Even downstairs they sometimes wouldn't put the aircon on. I'm all for conserving energy etc, but when there is 20+ rooms all with a dedicated aircon unit, why not have a couple more running to keep the rest of the hostel nice and cool!?
They need some more communal space and more bathrooms.
Our 4-bed dorm had comfy beds, aircon, lockers, good towels, good lights etc and was relatively quiet except for when the annoying drunk Americans in the room next door were there. The lobby area is nice and modern and the included breakfast is same as most places, nothing amazing, just toast, tea/coffee etc.
The main negative for Ryokan @ Muntri is the bathrooms. They definitely need some improvements. Firstly, for a hostel that caters to a lot of western guests it would be nice to actually have some toilet paper in each of the toilets. All of the toilet cubicles and surrounding area was wet ALL the time. Really gross. The bidet hose things were leaking everywhere and the toilets didn't seem to be cleaned very often. I think there was only about 6 showers and 6 toilets in the whole place (atleast 80+ guests). The shower pressure was pretty average and it was always really humid and full of mosquitoes in the bathrooms because there is no aircon anywhere there either. The downstairs bathroom was dirtier and had piles of rubbish bags lying around and bottles of cleaning chemicals sitting around on the floor. Plus, guests have to take off their shoes when they enter the accommodation area, so you either have to go barefoot in the disgusting bathrooms or wear some of the shared thongs there (just as disgusting really). The shower and toilet cubicle doors are an opaque glass and you can see the person on the other side, not very private!

Ryokan was one of the best places we stayed on our trip, but the bathrooms are a big let-down.

Room Tip: Rooms away from drunk americans are quieter.

Stayed there for two nights in Feb '13 and was overall very satisfied. Situated at a prime location in Georgetown, most food spots were in walking distance and it was really convenient to hop on public transport, especially if you're traveling on a budget. Place was clean & was given a room on the 3rd floor with ensuite bathroom! Only complaint is that our room was not housekept after the first night we stay. (Daily housekeeping was supposed to be provided!) And oh, they have bicycles for hire too, convenient if you don't want to walk around in the Penang heat. Staff were friendly and helpful too.

Room Tip: Choose The Loft for more privacy as it is situated alone on the 3rd floor at the back of the buildin...

i stayed two nights at ryokan in a private room and i liked it. the rooms are nice, clean and quiet, only thing is that they don't have a window. good value for money, good location and really nice front desk.

ok if you want to stay in penang for a couple of days without spending too much. however, there are lots of guesthouses and hostels out there, some in very beautiful old colonial houses, so it might be worth checking those out too!!

Cant say enough about this place! Stuck in Penang for longer than expected with a scuba related injury to my ear and was treated like family! Even over the busy chinese new years! Winnie and Edward on the desk are fantastic and always asked how i was feeling. The lady who serves breakfast made me fresh eggs even though i arrived ten minutes after the ending of service. I didnt even ask. All the photos are true to form and Penang is a truly hospitable town with lovely, friendly and honest people; as epitomized by the Ryokan staff! Thank you from Christine from Toronto!

Room Tip: Loved the female only room!

Very clean, modern-looking hostel, a step above the other backpacker offerings on Muntri/Chulia Street (but still great value). Friendly staff were always on hand to give helpful advice eg bus routes, restaurants etc. Would stay again

I stayed here for 4 nights in a private room with my girlfriend. The rooms are wonderful. Everything you coukd possibly want. The private rooms are located at the back so there is no external noise and they are dark meaning you can sleep extremely well. Breakfast is a mix of eggs, toast, jams, cereals tea and coffee and fruit.cannot recommend highly enough if your budget permits

it is a fantastic stay at Ryokan on Muntri street. The room is the cleanest i have ever been. Nice staff, considerate cabinet, hot shower and all-ready-shampoo-and-body-gel. Staffs are at the counter all day so once you have any inquiry about stay environment or travel route, they are always ready to answer your question. Staff can speak both Chinese and English!

Room Tip: the wooden floor may be a bit noisy at night when people walk by your dorm. but it is acceptable.
