The upstairs hallway area is calm and quiet, although it could do with some aircon as its very hot up there with just fans. Even downstairs they sometimes wouldn't put the aircon on. I'm all for conserving energy etc, but when there is 20+ rooms all with a dedicated aircon unit, why not have a couple more running to keep the rest of the hostel nice and cool!?
They need some more communal space and more bathrooms.
Our 4-bed dorm had comfy beds, aircon, lockers, good towels, good lights etc and was relatively quiet except for when the annoying drunk Americans in the room next door were there. The lobby area is nice and modern and the included breakfast is same as most places, nothing amazing, just toast, tea/coffee etc.
The main negative for Ryokan @ Muntri is the bathrooms. They definitely need some improvements. Firstly, for a hostel that caters to a lot of western guests it would be nice to actually have some toilet paper in each of the toilets. All of the toilet cubicles and surrounding area was wet ALL the time. Really gross. The bidet hose things were leaking everywhere and the toilets didn't seem to be cleaned very often. I think there was only about 6 showers and 6 toilets in the whole place (atleast 80+ guests). The shower pressure was pretty average and it was always really humid and full of mosquitoes in the bathrooms because there is no aircon anywhere there either. The downstairs bathroom was dirtier and had piles of rubbish bags lying around and bottles of cleaning chemicals sitting around on the floor. Plus, guests have to take off their shoes when they enter the accommodation area, so you either have to go barefoot in the disgusting bathrooms or wear some of the shared thongs there (just as disgusting really). The shower and toilet cubicle doors are an opaque glass and you can see the person on the other side, not very private!
Ryokan was one of the best places we stayed on our trip, but the bathrooms are a big let-down.
