“Quirky little one!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2011

My stays in flashpackers' throughout South-East Asia has been a mixed bag. However, the Ryokan stacks quite high on my "Quirky little one" list.

The fun elements, the rather subtle sexy clubby feel, combined with the slight industrial/minimalist concepts has really spun a ultra modern and uber chic hostel. What is enjoyable is to see Ryokan putting some thought into what allows guests the myriad opportunities to connect beyond the occassional smile and a beer by the bar. That I feel is priceless!

Looking forward to seeing more Ryokan's all over SEA someday soon.

Was there briefly over one of the weekends. Interesting concept, nice blend of 'old-school' charm with technology. Friendly staff makes the visit better.

Ryokan is a new hostel in a great location, within walking distance of Georgetown's major attractions. It has a nice atmosphere and the good design and layout. The communal areas are relaxed, especially the reading area: complete with beanbags, wireless and iPads. The staff are helpful and friendly and the hostel is very clean.

There were a couple of things that need ironing out before Ryokan is a 5* hostel. Although warm and clean, the showers were not powerful enough in our en suite room or in the dormitory area. Also, we were woken up in the middle of the night by a staff member letting a newly arrived guest into our private room. He was very apologetic and the problem seemed to be that the booking system was confusing, even for the staff.

However, these were merely teething problems, which did not at all detract from an otherwise great base for exploring Penang.

It was clean, it was reliable and very savvy. The people in there were very friendly and extremely helpful. Clean sheets when we arrived and there were not waiting at the counter. They even have Ipads for us to use! Toilets and bath were very clean, just very worthwhile for what we paid. It was in a great district and everything was within walking distance. Penang has great food too!

I've never been an avid fan of budget traveling, especially hostels
there's many horror stories about bed bugs, dirty toilets and
mattresses which reaks life threatening stench. However, seeing the
recent reviews of this hostel and being in my preferred location, I
decided to step out of my comfort zone and give it as shot. My
verdict: ryokan changed my perception on hostels. I stayed in the four bed dorm.
The bunks were nice and clean and beautifully designed, and each bed comes with it's personal locker and light box which is really handed. The showers and toilets
were very well Mantained - they used Rainshowers and premium shower
gels, and I love the chic chillax corner. The bean bags were so comfy
I was tempted to ask if it's for sale. All in all, it was a good stay
and I will definitely recommend this place for other tavellers. Oh
they have private suites too or those who prefer privacy :)

I stayed 2 nights at the dorm & on the 3rd night i upgrade myself to the suite since it is so affordable. Rooms were beautiful. Basically the entire place was beautiful. Super clean, and super great location. Just 10 minutes walk to the most happening night spot in Penang and also to the biggest food court in Penang. The staffs were very knowledgeable and helpful in every way possible. It is the best hostel i stayed in my years of travelling around the world.
