“Stay here!!!!”

The Penanga has a perfect blend of need and luxury. After arriving very late in Georgetown to find our room at the new Asia heritage was double booked we were seeking calm, pleasure, rest and an allover sanctuary. We found the Penanga the next day. Reception was generous with there time and efforts to help. The last minute room required a fair bit of effort for the hotel and staff to accommodate me and my 3 children. They were understanding and genuinely wanted to find a solution to each of my needs.

The rooms were exactly the tonic to a day in Penang. Decor allowed you to know where you were while the finishes encouraged all of us to feel rejuvenated and rewarded for making the trip. Others have describe the rooms better than I could. For us the time spent in the rooms was for sharing and recovering.

The lap pool, the jacuzzi, were just the start of our daily wind down. The staff became friends to the kids (9, 11, 14), the coffee was the best so far in Malaysia/Singapore, the grounds were peaceful and the perfect escape from the streets while maintaining a connectedness to the surrounding amenities.

I can recommend the penaga to anyone who hopes for that balance between local yet cosmopolitan. Authentic people offering you the opportunity to enjoy every element of your time in Georgetown.

Hotel Penaga is gorgeous - each room has been decorated differently with a mix of traditional and more modern art and furnishings (including a jacuzzi bath). The hotel has a cool artist in residence program too which has provided much of the art.
The hotel also has a real environmental approach - far beyond just reusing your towels.
It is great to have a swimming pool (salt water!) in the middle of the city, and it is the right size for swimming laps. It is surprisingly quiet and peaceful in the garden.
Staff know your name, are very helpful, and very sweet.
Rooms are extremely comfortable. Wifi is super speedy!

My husband and I stayed 2 nights in this hotel and it was great. The rooms decorated in malay/Chinese style were great and I loved the stained glass windows and the art works throughout the hotel. All the staff were very friendly and helpful both those on reception and in the restaurant and bar. The restaurant staff were particularly helpful on steamboat night! The only room for improvement would be the menu which is predominantly western in flavor and quite limited. Doesn't matter though as there is all that wonderful street food not too far away.
Location is great and plenty of things to see in walking distance. Would definitely go back.

Found via Trip Advisor and enjoyed staying here four days with my husband and another couple. Well situated on the edge of the Unesco Heritage town area, and one block from the free bus which winds through town. The airport shuttle bus only runs about four times daily. Staff were friendly and helpful. Rooms were clean, tastefully decorated in Chinese-Malay style furniture and various artwork, apparently each room a little different. Comfortable and funky lounge furniture. We were one floor up from the street view ("first floor"). I really liked the stain glass windows and found the roll down blinds were fine to keep out the light. The moderate street noise was easily blocked out for me by ear plugs, although our friends had to change to a higher room as he can't wear ear plugs. The bed is quite firm, which our friends enjoyed but my husband did not. The breakfast selection was good, and included both Western and Asian options. Two small bottled waters were provided free every day. Other non-alcoholic drinks were provided one time in the fridge. You could easily buy more water and non-alcoholic drinks in the great locals frequented restaurant across the street.

We stayed in this hotel after choosing it from the Tripadvisor recommendations. There's a lot in its favour. It is situated on the outer edge of the World heritage buffer zone, It's got a lot of style. Extensive use of wood. Down to wooden floors (with mats).
It's misleading to say that it is renovated, it looks more like an extensive restoration where no detail is left untouched. If I had to make a complaint i"d say that it can be a little noisy from some of the traffic on the street. There are two layers of glass in the window, clear and decorative but it's not as good as double glazing. It is not a big complaint because it is such an attractive place to stay overall. Over our four night stay the various staff on the front counter and in the breakfast area were uniformly friendly and helpful. I recommend it!

Stayed in their room with a mezzanine level where the beds are. Nice warm service from the hotel. Small pool but quaint. Very nice room with a peranakan feel. Very spacious. Breakfast could be a little limiting but then there are great street fare around. You wouldn't be starved for food. Thumbs up for the service and rooms. It's at an location that is walkable to most locations in jalan Penang, MacAllister Road and the Jetty.

My husband and I have just spent 4 days at this lovely boutique hotel.we picked it via trip advisor! The staff were wonderful.helped us in every way.A big thank you to Anne and Salim!
My husband had his birthday here and the staff arrived at our door with cake in hand singing happy birthday!!
The hotel it self is a charming Chinese Malay style, just what we wanted as we love antiques!
The hotel is well situated in George Town.very close to bus stops and restaurants!
Breakfast was great! The lap pool refreshing after a hot day walking around the town.
We were sad leaving!
I would highly recommend this hotel.
