“Simple but great Penang style food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2012

We had this place down as one of our must-eat restaurants on a short trip to Penang. The decor is simple and down to earth and not really anything special. However the food was great and authentically spicy. We were asked how spicy we wanted the dishes and so we opted for 'medium'.

We enjoyed the double cooked roasted port (Siu Yok) which was a nice change from the usual way it is cooked in Cantonese style restaurants. Here it comes stir fried with chilli/sambal and has a slightly sweet taste. It was very more-ish. The stir fried potato-leaf with sambal was also very tasty and quite an unusual dish to see on the menu. Our favourite dish was the Curried stingray fish which came in a fantastic sauce which was slightly sour possibly by the addition of tamarind or other souring ingredient. Definitely recommended.

Here in Penang restaurants seem to close when the last patron leaves so this can mean they close before the official closing times. Best to arrive a little early as we had to persuade the staff to stay open for a little longer as we were late arriving for lunch.

“Yummy but pricey food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2012

4 of us had dinner yesterday and we ordered 4 dishes, deep fried fish fillet with black soy sauce and ginger, stirred fried roasted pork with chili, seaweed soup, toufu. Overall their standard of food still maintain but the size has really strung ! Their famous stirred fried roast pork with dry chili has strung so much and almost became mince pork ! We got only 3 pieces of fish fillet for the 4 of us and the same goes with the rest of the dishes. The price came up to RM 96 inclusive of 4 glasses of herbal tea and we have to go else where for a second round. IMO, the dishes we ordered was just ordinary so be prepared to pay more if you order prawn, fish and other seafood. For a restaurant in the heart of town with parking problem and no aircondition, price is steep.

“Fantastic food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2012

We went to this restaurant because we had read about in a review in Australian Gourmet Traveller. It was amazing food. The flavours were all very distinctive in the dishes. Also for a local family restaurant the staff were great and suggested other dishes for us to have. The top dish was Pork Trotters in Black vinegar - delicious. Very good value.

“Casual, local and very good food!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2012

REcommended by our hotel, and a very short walk from the hotel, we arrived close to closing time, but were made to feel welcome. Most customers were local and was packed. As indicated in other reviews, no aircon but big fans and open to the street, so was not uncomfortable. Arriving late also meant they were out of some of their specialties, but good alternatives were recommended.Wait staff were helpful in advising us on quantity to order as well. Had we stayed longer in Penang would have gone back. Delicious and inexpensive...and ice cold beer!
