“for 1 night - for visa run tourists”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2014

about Geogetown:
it has a teeny-tiny downtown, do not worry about the location of the hotel,.... in the downtown everything is in half an hour disctance by foot.

about the hotel
+ pro:
central located
if you are on visa run, it is perfect for you, it is end of the Chulia street, 2 minutes far, from Banana House ( arrange your visa here!!!!!! )
and the bus will arrive in the Chulia street at night, so you cannot walk so much,...
it is in the backpakers disctrict, you can drink with others
own bathroom
big bed
TV
hot water
"avarge" clean - for 1 night okay

it was 87 ringit/night ( double bed, own bathroom)

- cons:
smelly, dirty, run-down!!
the prayer from the islam temple will wake you up around 6:00

summ:
if you are a visa run tourist it is perfect for you, for one or two nights
if you are a tourist, who would like to stay in the town for few nights, choose another hotel!!!! it is better to find another hotel, which is not in the backpaker street, and much more clean, and close to the european standard

Having scoured the city in a taxi for hotels, this was the cheapest one (excluding guest houses) at RM87 per night. Very courteous, efficient staff, even a doorman! This hotel was probably quite grand thirty or forty years ago, but looks tired now.
That being said, the place is very clean, the rooms are spacious with excellent views and the showers have good pressure. What more do you need really?
Downsides are the noise from the street, (but being so central you must accept this) and the call to prayer at 6am is a bit of a drag at times. However, as I had a cold on my trip, I simply used the room to convalesce during the day.
Plenty of eateries and market stalls nearby, as well as Kashmirs next door. Food and drink here is almost the same price as western countries, so beware! Eat at the little locals places if you want Asian prices.
The Oriental is well worth it for those who want the convenience of downtown or if you're on a visa run as I was, it is very near all the visa agent shops. Be careful of the lift, just press up and it'll come to your floor to take you down.
Tip: use the Internet cafe upstairs in the same building for convenience. Paid about RM3 per hour with color printing.
Recommended.

We stayed here for 5 nights on a visa run, it's all you need if your on a low budget! The location is central & within walking distance of restaurants and bars. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful!

Location is Very very close to the party strip- which had its disadvantages... Every night all we heard was 'boom boom boom' from the club music below till 3am in the morning!! & we were on floor 14!

The rooms and corridors stunk of cigarette smoke...the room was spacious, we were given a twin room, they were cleaned everyday, but the beds & pillows were very uncomfortable & hard! Not the best sleep I've had in my life!!! Breakfast was not for westerns. I skipped breakfast everyday as there was nothing suitable to eat- even the cereal was limited! & there was no fresh fruit at all!! & when I asked for watermelon -they had ran out.

We did have room service which was quick & easy! & the room service menu was good!!

This hotel is ideal for anyone who is on a low budget & want to be close to nightlife

Dirty sheets, towels with holes in it that felt like sandpaper, very outdated interior (1970s something), weird smelling elevator. Very noisy due to single glazing, we were kept awake by the bar in the street, the people on the opposite of the building were woken up by the mosque. The staff was very friendly, but it couldn't make up for the disappointing stay we had.

This was a good, centrally located budget hotel (about AUD$28/night). The room and furnishings were dated, but for the budget price, it was clean, comfortable and quite (our room was a number of floors up) with lift access. The staff were very helpful. I stayed in March 2011, and would stay at the Orient Hotel again.

My family stayed for 3D2N in adjacent room. 1 is the family room while another is the standard. The family room is rather spacious with good view, equipped with a fridge, yet there is no tea-making facilities provided. I feel that a kettle should be provided in the family room. As for the standard room, well...it's just "standard". Just two single beds and other basic furniture. Talking about the furniture, mmmm....I would have to say "antiques"!!!! I think the decoration and the furniture have existed since the 1960s. We had a great laugh when we say the caption in one of their brochures "Elegantly furnished"!!!! Yet, the rooms are clean and they make-up the room everyday.

Yet, the location is strategic. For those who love the pickled fruits or "jeruk", Chowrasta is just 2 mins walk. Komtar and another shopping mall next to it is about 5 mins and the other heritage attractions are approximately 5-20 mins away. If you need the public transportation, buses are easily available. Taxis are patiently waiting on the ground floor. It is just a matter of fare. If you are a non-muslim, this place is a food heaven. There are simply too many food stalls around. Just have a pick. Even if you are foreigners and would like to have a western meal, don't worry. You still have a lot of choices. Muslim foods are more into Nasi Kandar. If you do not like it, other options are rather far, e.g. Padang Kota.

Staff - not so friendly but they are not rude either. But my minus points would be that there is no free wi-fi here and the noise after 4pm. The music only slows down around 3am! So if you want a quiet place or have babies with you, then I would not suggest this place.

As I've read the comment about this hotel before I booked it, the tips about the air-cond is definitely helpful. Thank you to that particular traveller. If you plan to stay here, make sure you know how to "operate" the air-cond.....

Room Tip: Family room is spacious and can accomodate to a lot of people (provided you bring your own air-bed o...
