“Good location but a bit noisy at night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

My family stayed for 3D2N in adjacent room. 1 is the family room while another is the standard. The family room is rather spacious with good view, equipped with a fridge, yet there is no tea-making facilities provided. I feel that a kettle should be provided in the family room. As for the standard room, well...it's just "standard". Just two single beds and other basic furniture. Talking about the furniture, mmmm....I would have to say "antiques"!!!! I think the decoration and the furniture have existed since the 1960s. We had a great laugh when we say the caption in one of their brochures "Elegantly furnished"!!!! Yet, the rooms are clean and they make-up the room everyday.

Yet, the location is strategic. For those who love the pickled fruits or "jeruk", Chowrasta is just 2 mins walk. Komtar and another shopping mall next to it is about 5 mins and the other heritage attractions are approximately 5-20 mins away. If you need the public transportation, buses are easily available. Taxis are patiently waiting on the ground floor. It is just a matter of fare. If you are a non-muslim, this place is a food heaven. There are simply too many food stalls around. Just have a pick. Even if you are foreigners and would like to have a western meal, don't worry. You still have a lot of choices. Muslim foods are more into Nasi Kandar. If you do not like it, other options are rather far, e.g. Padang Kota.

Staff - not so friendly but they are not rude either. But my minus points would be that there is no free wi-fi here and the noise after 4pm. The music only slows down around 3am! So if you want a quiet place or have babies with you, then I would not suggest this place.

As I've read the comment about this hotel before I booked it, the tips about the air-cond is definitely helpful. Thank you to that particular traveller. If you plan to stay here, make sure you know how to "operate" the air-cond.....

Room Tip: Family room is spacious and can accomodate to a lot of people (provided you bring your own air-bed o...

Nice rooms and Good Housekeeping Staff. Great foods we had from there.I stayed at 4th floor. Night time karaoke happening in top floor. But I missed it. Reception staff also very good and always helpful.

The rooms are not refurbished and poorly maintained. The furnitures looked like it is from early 80s. Even the lobby looked unchanged since the 80s. If you are a fan of retro stuffs, this is the place for you.

However the location is great, and it is near to most of the historical colonial bldgs of Penang. It is also within walking distance to Komtar.

This is an old Chinese hotel. We chose it after having seen lots of hostels located on the Love Lane and Chulia Street. This one had at least a private bathroom and a lot of space in the room... As mentioned in the previous reviews, the furniture is old and completely outdated, with exception of bed, which is quite comfortable (luckily). Nonetheless the room is functional and big. The biggest problem we had, were the cockroaches, which appeared on the third day in the bathroom...
Another a bit scarry impression is the information placed basically everywhere around the hotel about locking the doors with all possible lockers, checking the corridors, storing anything valuable at the reception, etc... It seems like George Town is one of the most dangerous places in Malaysia, which of course is NOT like that. What is more, we never felt in danger or anything like it... On the contrary. But the hotel gave such impression.
I recommend this hotel if you don't have any other options (which was basically our case for a double room with bathroom)... In other case, look for something else. Even the Continental Hotel, which is very close by, seems a better option, more expensive though...

Though hotel furniture & equipment is really overaged & worn, but we could sleep well in this hotel and all things were at least working. Walls and ceilings shout for a new painting.
AC is centralised, you cannot adjust temperature, but luckily it was not too cold for us (usually we set AC to 25-27 °C).
Quiet rooms, comfortable bed & cussions. Religious speakers at 06:10 AM opposite hotel are pretty loud, but stop after few minutes.

Room Tip: Upper floors = nice view & less traffic noise.

A bit old, but clean. Rooms very spacious with huge windows. AC .......... freezing, but you have got "door" to close it :) New bathroom, daily cleaning service.
Location is advantage of this hotel: close to Little India, in the center, just few steps from Bus stop to Penang Hill.
We'd seen 5 guesthouses before Oriental hotel - it was the best choice.

Stayed as an overnighter, the rooms are pretty old, air-conditioning was freezing. As the location was quite good and the price reasonable it is ok for short stay. Next time I will stay elsewhere as there are better options.
