“Promising location but vast revitalizing needed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013

3rd trip to PLR but the first 2 visit sans 3-yr old pre-schooler.

Service:
Started w trying to book via YTL office under local resident package but somehow the cheaper rooms are "not available". After booking via Agoda.com for just room & breakfast, the YTL website offered the cheaper room! Obviously not too thrilled w the insane ferry charges (RM160 per person) and obscene meal charges (RM45+ for a dish).

Not a great start.

Their interns however were friendly and the wait staff at Feast Village were extremely accommodating. Their manager remembered my daugther's vegetarian diet and offered to make special meals for her.

Location:
A secluded island with scarce activities. Only a library with 3 computers to keep your family entertained in the evening. Not appealing if you hv young children. 2 of their Restaurants also barred children under 16. The only beach area is Emerald Bay . Small and with less than pristine waters.

Room:
Fairly spacious with balcony and big tub. Do stay in garden villas should u hv young children to avoid steep stairs up to hill villas.

Overall:
I was impressed with the resort 5 years ago but having visited awe-inspiring beach resorts over the years, PLR leaves much to desire. As a resident, have truly supported home grown YTL chain of hotels by staying in their other resorts such as Tanjong Jara. However, with the same amount of $ (RM1,000) a night, one can stay in bigger, more luxurious spaces in SEA such as Intercontinental Danang, Tubkaak, Krabi and even in expensive Shangri-la, singapore.

Dear Guest
Thank you very much for your stay and continuous support to YTL hotels. We have added recently other package and we are considering adding the ferry charges to each package (Depends on the booking channel and the booking channel requirements as well). We will make sure that all local package prices are completive comparing to both local and international market. Due to high demand on computer usage at the library area; we are now providing I pad with high speed internet connection at very reasonable price.
Once again; thank you very much for supporting YTL hotels and looking forward to welcome you again.

My wife & I stayed for 9 nights, March 2013.

Generaly expensive.
Food was good but over priced.
The ferries should have been more frequent (suggest every hour) & cheaper allowing residents to make their own excursions as the hotel did not offer any that I know of.
Not enough information provided about what is going on.
Great place for 2 or 3 days & no more.
The staff where great but it's not just the staff that make a good hotel great.
Be careful on what food package you get (can get boring with the only 2 choices we had).
No entertainment in the evening, Management please note, you are missing an opportunity here, entertain your guest's & they will buy more drinks throughout the evenings. you have a captive audience. Profit is not a dirty word as you know only too well.
N.b. small beer 20 Myr standard Carlsberg not premium Stella artois, small glass house wine 38Myr.

Rooms are adequate for a 4 star hotel (Garden Room). On our veranda the paint was pealing on the balustrade, in need of a coat of paint & TLC.

Choose a time when the children are at school if you want a quite holiday (there is nothing for children to do).
The beach was good BUT due to a storm one night the Emerald Bay was impossible to swim in because there was so much rubbish for 3 to 4 days. the staff did all they could but I only saw a cleaning boat in the bay once. In my opinion this should have been there daily & working for a lot longer. A point to remember. Pangkor Laut is a small island next to the larger industrialised Pangkor Island. It also has large ship's passing through the Staits of Melaka which may contribute to the rubbish problems. Something that the resort has no control over.

I did not once in 10 days see a member of the management team, ask if everything was ok let alone no management walking around or made themselves known. We were invited & went to a 'Cocktail evening' (1hr) & our host Abbey was wonderful. This was obviously a token gesture & a learning curve for the staff (well done Abbey!).
We sometimes went to the main pool at 10 to 10.30am for the day. However there are no staff around to look after guests until 12 noon, (get your own towels, take your own water). After that you MIGHT get asked once in a day if you needed anything. I usually had to go the bar/restaurant to get a drinks menu because the service around the pool was let's say ……. 'non existent'..

I am lucky to have traveled the world & stayed in a great deal of top hotels but on this occasion I must say I was very disappointed.

Room Tip: Do not choose a garden room if you want privacy.

Dear Guest
First of all; I would like to thank you for your long stay and your valued time sharing your experience. We are trying to keep our prices at competitive level since logistics are involved but this is not an excuse though we are offering more competitive packages including meals and speed boat fee. The weekly cocktail hour is attended by the entire department heads and please accept our apology as they failed to address their positions properly while we are delighted with your kind recognition to Abbey.
Once again; thank you very much for your valued comments and notes which will help us to develop both products and facilities.

It's our first time staying at this resort even though it's only 80 km drive away from home (but it took 2 hours because of the 32 traffice lights - Yes, someone counted). We decided to take the residents package - only way to go if you are a local - room & food and you can opt to include spa as well.
Check-in at the Marina Island was a breeze with a cold drink while waiting which was nice. But something should be done about the untarred public car parking across the road in the hot sun without any shade. For that, you have to pay RM10 per day. That was a bit disappointing. The resort should take care of it itself with tiled flooring and covered parking and with security staff in keeping with 5-star standard of the other facilities.
The resort was beautiful and service superb. We stayed at a garden villa which overlooks the feast village restaurant so not much of privacy if you want to lounge at the patio. I like the hill villas but that's at different price.
Food. There are about 6 restaurants to choose from. Good variety. The food is very expensive (Malaysian standard), hundreds RM at every meal for 2 if we were to pay the meals separately. Under the resident package, breakfast was buffet which was not a big spread but good, lunch and dinner was 2-course which was substantial. But there's one thing I didn't like - at the Feast village where we had dinner, we were not allowed to choose ala carte. We were told under the resident package, we must choose only the rice set dinner. I wanted to have a western meal. The curry rice set was of high quality but the taste was very familar for us. I wanted something different which was in fact, cheaper than the rice set according to the price on the menu. I think this 'ruling' should be removed. Made us look like paupers.
The room was beautiful, tastefully furnished, had 2 basins and a Balinese bath large enough for two. How romantic. We enjoyed that but something made me a bit uncomfortable when I look up. The open bath had walls which are not very high. It's even worse when I saw it from outside the villa. You only need to be taller than 5' 6" to have a peek over the wall! Please make the wall of villa 389 much higher.
A note of appreciation for the special you gave my husband on his birthday. Thank you.
Thank you, Aris, for the very interesting jungle treking guide.
All in all, a wonderful weekend. We enjoyed being spolit. We must do this more often.

Dear Guest
Thank you very much for your valued time and your stay at Pangkor Laut Resort. Please accept our apology as we could not provide private parking due to terms and conditions beyond our control but we have raised our concerns to a third party. We will increase the selection of food at Dinner in Feast Village soonest and we will allow our guests to change the dinner set with a la carte main course. Aris is delighted by your kind recognition and looking forward to serve you again at Pangkor Laut Resort.

If you have high standards, this hotel simply will not meet them. Whilst arrival by boat into a grand entrance and welcoming staff get's things off on a good foot, standard slip a little from there on in - with the exception of a truly idyllic beach - see later.

Yes - on it's own Island - but thats about all there is to shout about.

Hotel is a bit rough around the edges, and simply not worth incurring great expense for. Be careful what room you are given if you are not a fan of hill-walking. Mind the door knobs falling off, locks not working, flithy windows that don't close and lock properly, etc, etc, etc.

Service leaves a lot to be desired (when you ask for an ashtray at your table you dont expect it to be slammed on the bar for you to collect. Ditto at GBP7-10 a drink, you want to drink it from a proper and clean glass with a decent measure).

Nothing to do bar beach and lay at the crowded pool if you are lucky enough to get a sunbed - don't bother with the Pangkor Island attractions - poor attractions in a very very poor and rundown location.

Decent enough food - but not worth GBP 200-250 per night (lunch maybe GBO100 for 2) - this is if your chosen restaurant is open and the chef isn't on holiday. Alcohol significantly overpriced. DO NOT even consider going without being full-board - your drinks bill will be enough without having to pay the hotel cost again for lunch & dinner - and you are on an Island - you have no choice!

If you have to pay for a boat (eg to catch a flight) - ridiculously overpriced.

Beach, when the water is clean, is simply perfect. White sand, secluded cove, shade coverage when needed, and (expensive) drinks service to your sunbed. BUT - when the sea is dirty - it is filthy. Don't be surprised to be swimming with boxes, cans, rubbish, sanitary items - but compliments to tireless hotel staff walking up and down cleaning and fighting a losing battle.

I think this hotel has a long way to go to live up to it's reputation, and to justify the expense one will undoubtedly incur once there.

No room service. Beware local tax and 10% service charge on EVERYTHING - even without 'service'.

I will have to admit this upfront. I don't normally stay at these luxury hotels. However, its been far too long, and since we had other plans at Sitiawan/Lumut, we thought of giving it a try with the residents' package (from their website).

Upon checking in to their ferry terminal on the main island, you could clearly feel the professional and courteous service by the staff. We were greeted with a nice cold drink and the 'check-in' process was straight a breeze. Do note: they do not have any private parking if you decide to drive and park there. They do have a temp private car area for drop off / pickups. The parking is just opposite and it was about RM$10 per day.

When we boarded the well kept speed boat, it was quite hot and humid (no aircon) but when it took off, it was very very refreshing. Everyone had to wear safety jacket but be prepared to sweat. After about 15 mins boat ride to the secluded private island, it was beautiful. Everything about it was great and clean. You can sense you are heavenly like area.

At the start, each guest group had a dedicated staff to explain how things work! Cannot believe that!! Again, another cold drink!

Upon checkin into our beach villa room, it was huge and cooling and perfect! Best room ever encountered. The beach villa had a outdoor spa just at the rear, very private and romantic!

Everywhere we went, the staff were very positive and always smiles at you.

As for the food, overall was good. You have no other choices apart from what the hotel had, but they had about 3-5 restaurants (include a fine-dining type). Food, as you may expect from these high class hotels, are not that cheap, so if you can get the residents package, get it as includes plenty of food. [Dont worry for the fitness freaks, they have quite a few gym choices and very well kept, their gym is 24 hrs] Oh yes, at Uncle Lim, for me, is the best. Breakfast wise, lots of choices, enough variant each day. Even though we stayed a couple of days, we met a friendly head chefs and he even offered us to cook something special but we ran out of days.

Apart from the service, easily the highlight is the SPA... Their award winning spa is well deserved!. I thought 45 mins massage is just "come in, let me massage you" type. Far from it!!! You have go through about 5-6 relaxing stations (including, hot fountain bath, japanese bath house, hot spring, steam facials and body scrub) before actually heading to your massage area. THE BEST!!! never had such an experience and for me is a must if you stay there. But book early, as they limit the number of guest per round.

For me it was so relaxing that felt like a super short stay. I would love to go back there again. For those who is willing to spend a bit more, like other reviews have rated, this IS a WONDERFUL hotel.

Try it and you wont regret it!

Room Tip: I totally understand this resort is not really for the budget conscious, but if you can afford, you...

From the moment we were met at our previous location (Pangkor Island Resort) to our departure a week later, we couldn't have been better looked after and provided for. When spending a week somewhere, you'd expect to be able to say that it was "perfect, except for..." and be able to mention at least one small niggle that wasn't quite right. Not so here; it was, indeed, perfect.
The location (we stayed in a Sea Villa) was superb, as was the food in all of the restaurants we tried. As for the Warrior Treatment in the spa, I can't recommend it highly enough for any chaps in need of a completely unwinding pampering.
I'm sure we'll be back.

Room Tip: Our Sea Villa was lovely. Very spacious, including the bathroom with a large, stone bath with window...

We decided to stay at Pangkor Laut resort after reading a fantastic review in the West Australian newspaper. We booked the Sea Villas, and were advised on arrival that we had been upgraded to one of the villas sitting over the sea - amazing! The rooms were massive. Very clean. It was quite a long walk to some of the eating areas (15min walk to get to breakfast each morning) but the walk is so scenic that this was no problem. Would highly recommend this resort. Service was impeccable, food beautiful (although a little on the expensive side, I think this is normal for these types of resorts - they have to get all the food in by boat)
