“Never stay in this hotel again”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2007

Stayed in this hotel from 1st ~ 4th July. First impression of the hotel is not well maintained. Main glass door seem haven't been cleaned for awhile. The pillar walls really needs a good paintwork.
After checking in, carrying the baby with me and my bags to take the lift up to the room, met an unhelpful staff who happened to take the same lift with us. Can see from his impatient face that we are holding him back in taking the lift...
Room - reasonably big but the view to outside is a wall !!
Breakfast sucks... end up we decided to buy back from outside for the next few days which taste much better than those offered from the hotel.
Went out in the morning and return around 3pm as the crying baby needs her afternoon nap. Open the door and found the room not cleaned up !! Call the housekeeping why the room not being clean up and request to speak to the manager. They send the housekeeping supervior up and when we ask why room clean yet , her respond with an attitude that because lunch time so no time to clean the room yet !!! Request to speak to the manager but the manager NEVER came at all !!
Conclusion from us - Never stay in this hotel again...

Stayed 5 nights with the Malay-Bornea Association and found the hotel comfortable, the staff courteous and helpful and enjoyed the meals which we had at the hotel. Would recommend the hotel to any traveller.

This is definitely one hotel not worth what you pay. The lowest room charge was RM185.00 nett. (Btw, this is probably a corporate rate as my husband made booking through his company; according to hotel's leaflet, the lowest rate is RM300.00 and if that's true, then for your own sake PLEASE stay somewhere else!)

We didn't have an eerie experience as others have mentioned, and the room is actually beautifully furnished, quite spacious and clean (see attached photos), but... a few problems.

First is the cleanliness, particularly the bathroom floor and around the bath tub can definitely be cleaned a little bit more thoroughly. Next is the bed. Despite looking beautiful in the photo, it's actually very uncomfortable. The bed-sheet and blanket felt rough on the skin. Our worst nightmare was the BREAKFAST! Having stayed in a number of hotels, our experience says with the rate they're charging, breakfast must be good. We were so, so wrong! It was one of the worst we've had in life. There were so few dishes to choose from, even worse, they're tasteless.

What I can say is this hotel may be considered and could have been worth it if only the rate were lower, I'd settle for RM140.00. Guess the reason it's dear is just because they provide you with a bath-tub.

View from the room is bad, it's facing old buildings, but there isn't much to see in Ipoh town, really. One plus point is that Ipoh Parade, a rather large and nice shopping center, is just opposite the hotel. It takes probably just 2 min. to walk there.

I enjoyed the shopping, but not so much with my stay.

  • Liked — The pleasant room furnishings; it's close by to a shopping center
  • Disliked — The uncomfortable bed; the lousy breakfast

Hi, a bunch of us stayed at the Syuen Hotel a couple of years ago, one of my relatives left the room at 5am because according to him, he felt an eerie presence there. I had also experienced a disturdingly damp and cold feeling whenever we were in our room that same night. My hubby spoke to the concierge the next day and told him about our experience and he said that there were many guests who've had similar experiences there.

Apart from that, it was run down and really not at all what I expected with them having the reputation of being one of the best hotels in Ipoh! However, the clubs are a short walking distance away but ladies, please beware as my handbag nearly got snatched by a motorcyclist just outside the hotel as we were walking down to the clubs.
