“Little gem - not sure about the hot water in tropical climate”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2012

We visited the Banjaran in October 2010 for 3 days (the calendar goes back only until 2011 summer) , as part of a round tour in peninsular Malaysia. The resort is wonderful, beautiful setting, lovely villas, good service. The food is a bit boring compared to the otherwise excellent local food. At this level one should have the opportunity to eat what one likes and not being on a forced diet - even in a wellness retreat. The real big thing would be a pool with cool water - no chance, the 70 degree spring keeps everything hot, which can be a bit too much in 35 degrees. Lovely birds in the garden, followed us anywhere we went. Anyway, it is money well spent whatever it costs - we deserve it after all :-)

Room Tip: One might think that on the water villas are more special, but they are smaller than garden ones.

Geothermal hotsprings, limestone caves and beautiful nature got us falling in love with The Banjaran. We stayed in the water villas and it was excellent. Love the geothermal hotsprings and the jacuzzi in our villa. Read more about our stay here: http://goodyfoodies.blogspot.com/2012/04/villas-at-banjaran-hotsprings-retreat.html

I have visited The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat twice within 6 months but during the first visit I spent a lot of my time in the Steam Cave as it detoxifies you with its natural increase in temperatures to give you a good sauna within about 30 mins. It is so natural in the way it cleanses your skin that you resolve never to go to an artificial sauna after this. So, to all planning a getaway to this extraordinary resort, make sure you spend some time in this special cave. I was there every day of my stay for a minimum of 30 mins and never regretted it!

The next cave that fascinated me was a unique wine cellar which , I was told, was not part of The Banjaran, but is open to hotel guests and outsiders as here is a unique cave where posh private parties are often held. I had the privilege of attending one such posh party here with a band . But do not be deceived by the exterior as I was on my first visit as the imposing steel high steel grated gate is most deceiving. Once inside , you will be shocked by its many specially designed water features which give it a cooling effect together with its air-conditioned hi-tech. The dim lights give it a medieval ambiance with an ethereal effect. Occasionally karaoke sessions are held here too .

Here the tastefully designed furniture and the aesthetic deco creates an exclusive luxurious breathtaking environment for visitors to wine and dine as there is a bar and a rich varied collection of even limited editions of wine that even a wine connoisseur may not have seen. I stood dumbfounded as I walked round the cave admiring its many hidden nooks and corners .

This wine cellar aptly called Jeff's Cellar is aptly named after its founder and owner but guests who dine here have written raving reviews that made me want to experience this myself. What even shocked me further was that this wine cellar is 280-million years old and is open from 9 - 11 pm for hotel guests and outsiders who want a private party. This wine cellar, I soon discovered, was the only place in the resort where alcohol is served. Being in this breathtaking wine cellar is in itself a rich unique experience which no visitor to the resort should miss.

Room Tip: Any of the rooms is fine.

Stayed at the Banjaran for three nights with my eight yr old... totally missed the fineprint .. no kids below 12...thankfully the Head Butler Pamela came to our rescue n made an exception to accommodate our oversight.. My friends had brought their 9yr old as well... so we promised to keep the kids quiet n be very careful with their safety...

Irealised why the no kids rule when we were escorted into the resort proper... the geothermal pool around which the whole resort has been built around is extremely hot and without barriers .. a definite no. .

Words cannot explain the magnificance that greeted each one of us... the ancient mountain is awe inspiring.. the whole place took on a surreal out of this world quality at nightfall.. the lake was swirling with mist ... and the numerous stars set against the mountains feel like a page out of jurrassic park..

The rooms are spacious.. rustic n complement the environment.. a lovely little pool right at the entrance. A very large tastefully decorated room extremely comfy linen n bed.. which leads to the washroom with generous views thru glass panels which take u into the mountains..there is an adjoining geothermal jaccuzzi which compensates for the lack of bathtub.. its outdoors and warm throughout..

Food quality is top notch and so is the pricing... be warned there are no shops or food joints nearby.. pack some snacks or stop by while driving from airport to stock up on some tid bits..

Entertainment is Lost world of Tambun water theme park.. a must for its lovely petting zoo.. the critters are well taken care of and happy.. the birds are free ranging and extremly tame... the shortcut walk from the resort to the theme park is an experience by itself... cutting through the mountain n forest..

Overall the whole trip was pleasant exciting n relaxing.. special mention needs to be made of the staff n their service.. especially Pamela..she provided the personal touch that made our stay all the more special.. and we had the pleasure of getting to know a wonderful driver Mr Raj. he was patient. . Polite and very trustworthy...

This was by far one of the best locations for a getaway. Had the opportunity to try it out when they were still testing the waters and allowed us to bring our three kids along.

We stayed in one of the Garden Villa's that had a larger plunge pool and a large outdoor Jacuzzi which was fed with the geothermal hotsprings water. The kids had a blast jumping from pool into Jacuzzi throughout the day.

The Banjaran is promoted as a Wellness Retreat where you come to rid yourself of the daily stress by Resting, Relaxing & Rejuvenating your senses. The journey begins when you arrive and are greeted by the extremely pleasant butlers who offer you lightly scented cold towels (the scent was specially created from a combination of lemongrass, pomelo & grapefruit by Bio Essence for The Banjaran and is carried through in their aromatherapy, shampoo, lotion, etc). We were offered a very refreshing Pomelo Mojito which was a non-alcoholic version of the Rum based Cuban Mojito. it was specifically chosen as the pomelo was inherent to Tambun and it was selected to reflect the location and to use local products. The invigorating drink had pomelo, fresh lime & mint which was very uplifting!

We were then sent to our Villa by a butler via buggy and given a tour pf the whole Retreat. Geothermal hotsprings lake and the Steam Cave was a sight to be seen and the experience cannot be replicated well in the website.

The Villa was truly a delight as it was very spacious with a separate living room complete with Bose Lifestyle 18 Home Theatre system. Beside the living room was the plunge pool which had water gushing out from the wall and washing your stress away. The bedroom was completely cocooned in comfort from the specially constructed super king size bed (7' x 7' with double fibre palm board). My wife could sleep well even with my customary tossing and turning throughout the night. Bedroom was well air conditioned had the comforts of 40" HDMI Samsung LED Smart TV which allowed us to play movies from our hard disk (they also had a selection of movies that you could borrow)

The his and hers vanity counters were truly thoughtful and duly appreciated. There's an inroom safe and extensive healthy minibar. Toilet and shower is glass encased and can be uncomfortable for those who are shy. The outdoor jacuzzi and rain shower were very enjoyable but jacuzzi can take a while to fill up as quite large. Butlers more than happy to st up jacuzzi for you while you enjoy the facilities.

The Pomelo is the restaurant that serves all meals which are uses the concept of S.L.O.W which is Seasonal, Low Fat, Organic & Wholesome meals more towards spa cuisine. The Chef de Cuisine Shan was very helpful in suggesting and specially creating dishes for our family to enjoy. The tenderloin was extremely tender and melted in your mouth. His Flourless Chocolate Cake was a delight which we could not have enough of.

The common swimming pool is free form and what is unusual about it is that it is naturally heated from an underground hotsprings stream that runs underneath it! the temperature averages between 34-37C (even in early mornings). There are many activities that can be done like yoga, tai chi, fitness workout, jungle walk, etc.

The Steam Cave was created to naturally harness the hotsprings steam in a cave to create a natural "sauna" where you relax for about 20 minutes before you plunge into the ice dipping pot to make you blood circulation get into overdrive.......similar to the Japanese Onsen theraphy. There are many caves here, namely The Crystal Cave, Meditation Cave and the Chairman's own Jeff's Cellar which is a cavenous cave which has been enhanced to fit his collection of vintage wines and also two bars. Great location for a party!

The Wellness Centre is designed along the lines of Asian Spa Therapy. The spa products used are from Kuush Australia as it is the only halal certified spa products which suits Malaysia. There are many treatment rooms and some are themed Indian (Ayurvedic), Chinese (TCM), Malay (Traditional) & VIP. There's a manicure & pedicure room too. The therapists are well trained and are able to adjust to suit the requirement of guests. They also have a hydrotherapy room and a colon hydrotherapy room.

All in all The Banjaran is a fantastic place and value-for-money even at RM2000 per night when you see the total package

Room Tip: Choose Garden Villa which is larger than Water Villa at the same rate

The Banjaran is the ideal choice if you're looking for a short romantic getaway. The surrounding landscape of limestone hills and geothermal hotsprings is amazing. Service is fantastic but dont expect to indulge your appetite over there. The hotel is based on a wellness concept and all the food/drinks served is healthy and nutritious. They dont even serve rice!! Apart from that, lots of ample spaces to roam around so privacy is not an issue. Definitely worth a visit. If you get bored or hungry (haha), Ipoh town is just 15 mins away.

Room Tip: The villas are really spacious.

The Banjaran in many ways is an incredible venue with the various caves for meditation, steam cave, mineral cave etc and the truly remarkable Jeffs Cave being one of the Worlds great wins bars with over 10,000 square feet of cave with lighting that shows off the cave and it's beauty...,truly an incredible experience. The rooms are good with a private pool and your very own hot spring Jacuzzi.
Ipohis famous for it's food and good value maybe in the future when the new chef starts the food taste and value will improve. At the moment it's mostly bland. There should be more fusion dishes or at least a new take on the Ipoh favourites. Wine is way over priced and the organic wines will need a palate that enjoys a different taste!
Staff are diligent, smiling and truly wanting to give good service but we feel the staff training is not complete and follow up not evident....as a result the marks for presentation and service cannot be more than 70% but at these prices should be of a higher standard. For instance the food treats brought to the room are never taken away when finished with. Cutlery is never washed but left on the plate as if new. The dishes at dinner or breakfast are all rushed to the table too quickly before you finish the previous course or are left sitting and getting cold until you are ready.
Training, training, training.
Yes we will go back as the hotel, environment and facilities are exceptional as well as the treatments in the spa.
