Family owned & run, could have been managed better as the location & views were fantastic.
Stayed here with family to give the opportunity for them to enjoy something different through a Groupon Promotion Voucher.
It was an adventure just getting there as I need to go thru roads not listed on GPS. We had almost reached there and turned back to the location map was a little misleading. Once we got on the right track, we had to go thru a narrow road which had a landslide at one point. It was uphill all the after that on a single road and pretty steep (more adventure and palpitation as there was a sheer drop on the left!). Also hoping that there would be no vehicles on the opposite direction which would require us to reverse downhill....wife eyes were shut thru out drive up!
When we arrived, no greetings and had to walk a fair bit to locate where the Reception was at. Finally came to owner's residence and was attended by the resident cook.
Only four units available at The Dusun (Emas, Tembusu, Berembun & a new duplex unit)
She sent us to our unit called Berembun House (had actually booked for Tembusu) but due to mix up dates wanted were not available and was upgraded with additional charge of RM50 per night (stayed 3D2N). Passed her our Groupon Voucher and she did not ask for the additional RM100 or any additional deposits. It was a smaller unit and located adjacent to Pool with a kitchenette complete with stove, utensils, cooking oil & spices. Shew informed us that they would light up the BBQ if we required which we opted for the 2nd night. She checked our required time for breakfast to be served as she prepared it fresh daily. She sent over the breakfast daily in a black & red Nyonya Tiffin Carrier. 1st day was simple kampung-fare of fried rice with fishcake, fried anchovies, fried egg & onion sambal. 2nd day was naai lemak with fried anchovies, peanuts, hard boiled egg & sambal. Simple & cheap but tasty enough.
No room key was provided and we were assured that our stuff was safe left in room (at night there was a dog prowling outside our room)...my over-active imagination had visions of werewolves or 'Psycho' came to mind with sliding doors that could not be locked would we all have our throats slashed!!!! To make matters worse we had a giant To'ki Gecko(about a foot long) who kept us awake throughout the night with his weird and loud calls. Was informed the next morning by one of the staff that it was specifically placed there including another room to give it the natural village / jungle environment.
Took a walk with wife while kids were swimming & as we passed the owner's house (which had a private signage outside)& we were asked in an unwewlcoming manner by the owner Mrs Helen (a Caucasian lady) "Can I help you?" Of course we said "No thank you" and walked out of that location....did not give us a good impression as usually small family run operations are very friendly especially at the rates that they charged.
Kids had a ball swimming as the Pool felt as though it belonged to us being connected to our unit on a sun deck. Downside was the Pool could have been cleaned better....on the last morning the owner's husband was checking the chlorine & ph level and chlorinatin the pool at about 9.30am, should have been done the night before.
2nd night we opted for BBQ and went into town to Giant Hypermarket to get chicken, sausages & seafood. The light up the BBQ pit for you and this location is also adjacent to our room with dining alfresco. We had a great time cooking & eating under the stars...one dog came for the BBQ too and had to feed it some food to keep it away from family as unsure if belonged to owners or wild (three dogs were there but owner Mrs Helen said they belonged to a construction site nearby....which looked to be building more units for The Dusun!)
No cleaning of room was done all was informed provided, bathroom floor always wet, 3 garbage bins in kitchen provided & informed to separate garbage but the garbage bins were not cleared for us after use on 1st day & overflowing, so had to tie them up and throw at the BBQ garbage bin which incidentally was also not cleared leading to the dogs rummaging leftovers & garbage strewn at the dining area. There is a self-service laundromat & dryer beside the BBQ area.
The Dusun has a lot of mosquitoes and repellent does not seem to work (they look a lot like dengue mosquitoes with b&w striped bodies & legs). Their bite is painful, causes swelling & itchiness. Large cockroaches on bedding did not provide conducive sleep including the constant call of our in-room giant To'ki Gecko.
2nd day went to Ostrich Farm nearby (RM8 for adults & RM6 for children below 12yrs old). Had fun feeding the ostriches and riding on one. When you opt to ride the ostrich you are given a certificate. Did not go to the waterfalls as did not feel family was up to if as a 45 minutes jungle trek (walking up to our unit itself almost gave me a heart attack!!!) Anyway this was because we parked one level below carpark at the top as we felt the gradient was too steep (incidentally car park is beside Berembun)
The day of check out Mrs Helen came to collect the additional RM100 with not much query on our stay (possibly cause we used Groupon Vouchers). As we were leaving, we saw Mrs Helen again who was busy loading bricks into a 4-wheel drive, she hardly paused to bid us farewell or have a safe journey home (we drove all the way from Penang which is more than 400km away). Halfway down the hill (as we parked lower)Mrs. Helen walked after us and called out to us, which led us to think that she wanted to bid us farewell properly. This was not so, as she informed me that wwe had not paid for the meals that we ordered. We only had breakfast there which she said was provided complimentary. If that was the case, then she said that's ok; no apologies offered which left us with a seriously bad impression of the service & hospitality offered (for heaven's sake....only 4 units how complicated can that be?)
Despite all of the above, it was still an enjoyable retreat for the family. Would have been much better if Mrs Helen had been a better Hostess.
