“Food for the forest”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

During our recent visit to the Datai we visited this restaurant many times. Definitely improved since moving to the Datai rainforest instead of belonging to the Andaman. The restaurant is a delight to sit in amongst the trees and cicadas, waiting in hope to spot the wild boar or flying squirrels.

The fish counter is an excellent addition, allowing you to select your fish, then discuss with your waiter and chef which way is best to serve, and of course, enjoy.

We tried a whole array of flavours during our many visits, with the fish in turmeric sauce definitely the highlight! The service is impeccable with extremely attentive staff. They made our experiences extra special. There is also the addition of the complimentary dessert table, showing off various indian and Malay desserts and fruit.
On our last night we were even presented with a coconut pudding recipe that one of the regular staff, Agus, had kindly typed out. We are now looking forward to preparing our own at home. I just hope its as nice.

This restaurant houses indian and Malay food and is definitely worth a visit at least once, if not 2 or 3 times during your stay.

“A different experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2013

Stayed at the Datai and wanted to check out the fair. Food was well prepared catered more for the generally Caucasian clientele.. So if u r looking for an authentic local experience, this is not it. If u want to enjoy some local fair in the area, give it a shot. Nothing memorable.

“great ambience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2013

Food was ok. However, the ambience is great. Right in the middle of a rainforest. The service was excellent.

“Unique Restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

It's in the middle of the rainforest to start with. The food was very good with fresh fish and seafood. They allow you to pick what you want and how you would like it cooked. The service is excellent. It's definitely for a special occasion but the staff and atmosphere are worth it!

“A great setting for a great restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

Gulai House was a great Malay/Indian restaurant with fantastic service. We ventured to this restaurant twice while staying at The Datai and they were very welcoming both times.
