On the face of it, this looks like a fab resort - set on its own private island off Langkawi, with lush vegetation and Asian-inspired low rise huts. The experience begins at the jetty where you take the boat ride to the resort. These are timed regularly throughout the day but stop in the evening, otherwise necessitating a very expensive private transfer back. So it is impossible to go to Langkawi for dinner and come back without paying through the nose. Their aim is to keep you hostage on the island for your entire holiday due to this ill thought out arrangement. The boat transfer is also far from luxury.
As soon as you step inside the resort, the cracks begin to show. The room was pleasant enough although we were assigned to a ground floor room that looked directly onto the gardens - not very private. Due to it being a tropical climate, the room felt a bit damp and humid, with a bit of a musty smell. I wouldn't say it was a luxurious room by any means, but it was fine.
The beach is small and not great quality - we used it maybe once, and spent the rest of our time by the pool. The beaches on Langkawi are far superior in quality.
Due to the idiotic boat restrictions, we were confined to eat on the island for most nights. This would have been fine if there was more choice. There seems to be another restaurant by the marina on the island but this was shut leaving only one option. They serve an a la carte menu of international food but overall the quality was lacking and there was no variety, no theme nights and it got incredibly boring night in night out staring at the same old overpriced menu. This was also another bugbear - prices were way higher than on Langkawi - because you are trapped there you are forced to pay but the inflation was ridiculous! I wouldn't have minded if there were 3 - 4 different restaurants we could have tried but there weren't. The most annoying part was the "entertainment" which was simply awful - a couple who moved round each table singing with guitar the same cover songs of Enrique Iglesias night after night.
Overall we had a pleasant trip to Langkawi but I would not stay here again, rather pay more for better quality accommodation on Langkawi itself. The facilities were good - tennis, ping pong etc but there just isn't enough on the island to keep people entertained there, and the quality is 3 - 4* at best. This has put me off staying in any Taj resorts in future.
