We stayed here for several nights, looking for an inexpensive, clean place on a quiet beach, yet close to Cenang. With The Lanai, we found all that we were looking for.
Checkin was smooth, though we agree with other reviewers that the front desk staff don't appear to be too friendly. Nobody comes running to take your bags to your room, and without any elevators in the hotel, some travellers might find it a challenge getting their luggage to the 3rd floor rooms. We were a bit surprised that the hotel does not have any non-smoking rooms.
The room we were initially given felt quite stuffy, possibly due to a heavy smoky smell. Since we both have asthma, we ended up asking to change our room. The front desk staff were very helpful and let us look at several available rooms until we found one that was not stuffy. One tip we learned is to run the AC to circulate the air in the room. With our second room, we found it not stuffy at all, had a TV that got the full range of channels (not sure why the one in the other room had issues), and had a shower door that worked correctly. Overall, it seemed like the first room we had was more of a "lemon", but the second one was much nicer. We were also suprised that our second room had a partial (very partial) ocean view, whereas our first room had a view blocked fully blocked by a coconut tree.
Breakfast was good, with lots of hot and cold items. Some of the breakfast staff are quite friendly, though the cooks at the made-to-order station are quite task oriented. The breakfast items had some variety each day, whch is nice if you're staying here for several days.
Location wise, the hotel is located at the far end of Pantai Tengah. Pantai Tengah, overall, is nice and quiet, with impressive views of the nearby islands. The Lanai provides complimentary beach chairs on the beach (be sure to pick up your towels from the pool desk). The Lanai has a beach cafe and bar, both of which we found quite reasonable. Don't miss the daily happy hour where beer is about 3-4 Ringgits.
The Lanai is a 20 min taxi ride from the airport and a 5 min taxi ride from Pantai Cenang. The walk to Pantai Cenang takes about 20 minutes and several restaurants and shops along the way. Within a 5 min walk from The Lanai to Pantai Cenang, we found several nice (and inexpensive) restaurants including serving Malaysian, Chinese, and Indian food in serene settings. Pantai Cenang has lots of restaurants, but none as romantic as the restaurants in Pantai Tengah.
Overall, if you're looking for a nice hotel on a quite beach, consider The Lanai.
