“Good ECO resort - please don't expect LUXURY here”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2013

I didn't come here expecting to be pampered and have the time of my life... for that you're going to have to pay AUD$300+ at one of the top end resorts on the island. Malaysia isn't as dirt cheap as other countries! So with that in mind I still had a lovely time here and enjoyed the resort and its facilities.
I had a garden facing villa which is a villa that still faces the ocean but behind the two rows of 'sea facing villas' which was fine. There's a little veranda to sit on and a tap for washing your feet before you go in. Room was a great size and so was the bathroom. The outdoor shower was fun, thought there would be a lot of mosquitoes but didn't really turn out to be the case phew! No bites while showering.
A few TV channels to watch (although BBC news was kaput when I was there), a brolly, a clothes drying rack, a mini couch, table etc. Was quite happy with the room. The sheets and towels were a little worn, bit less fluffy but was fine. You probably didn't want to use the slippers or robe they were not very nice (but I didn't need them so it was fine).
Two pools, the chlorine pool was busier because it was next to the bar and it was nice to lounge around and have food and drinks served at your chair. Pool towels provided although it was a bit strange as the towel shack had a break from 5-6pm so if you wanted towels during that time TOO BAD. Not sure why they can't get other staff to cover that time?
Gym looked ok but was completely unconditioned so I imagine only crazy people would want to use it ;)
Breakfast was a buffet, not the best buffet I've seen but enough variety (changes every day) and items to fill breakfast every day without getting bored. Opens nice and early at 7.30 which is good if you're getting picked up for a tour at 8!
There's also an activity area with table tennis and books (and uncomfortable chairs to sit on) and a tour centre (not the best prices but certainly convenient). Kid's activities planned most days as well which is great. Didn't go to spa because prices were a bit $$$, you can get cheaper treatments just outside.
Highly recommend the walks they give every day so you get a chance to see the green credentials. What they do here is excellent and more resorts should consider their impact on the environment.
So what are the CONS?
Well the lack of wifi in most areas was a bit of a pain. Even in areas where you can get it sometimes it was very flaky and not work for hours! Also the best area was the lobby and waiting area but this area gets VERY hot and stuff with no air con (or sea breeze).
The absolute WORST part of staying here were unfortunately ... the staff and service. They actually weren't very attentive or pleasant for the most part. No smiles, no hellos, and my biggest bugbear, if you were waiting for them they would TOTALLY IGNORE YOU. So if you're left waiting for 15 minutes because they're dealing with someone else they would ignore you and not even acknowledge you were waiting. A simple 'please wait, I'll be with you as soon as possible' would be nice, but instead you just felt.. ignored! It took an AGE to get anything sorted, such as drinks served, checked in or out etc. Sometimes reception was completely empty and you have no idea where any staff have gone, no bell, no sign or anything...
This meant I took one star off BUT otherwise it was a nice stay and I do recommend it... just wish it could have been even better if the staff were a bit more lovely! Not everyone was like this, the eco staff (ones looking after the green practices) were nice and I think the owner walked around and talked to people and he was REALLY lovely!

Thank you for staying with us and your candid review will only spur us to be more vigilant to our flaws with the desire to minimize if not to eliminate.

We are earnestly in a dire predicament to wait for our vendor to supply the parts that affected the only BBC channel which are unavailable in the Langkawi Island, while various options for a wider Wi-Fi coverage is being pursued.

Handling human resources are one of the most challenging aspects to muster and no amount of training will suffice if it only takes one staff not to toe the line. Be rest assured that remedial action is being taken in no uncertain terms for fault offenders. Besides, staff training is an ongoing process which is being looked into with earnesty.

It pleases us to know that your stay was pleasant and we are truly appreciative of your kind gesture to recommend our resort to others despite certain criteria did not meet to your expectation for which we are sorry.

In the interim, we look forward to your return to stay at our resort to experience the new us, in our quest to always improve for the betterment of our loyal guest like yourself.

Yes it's pretty dated. Yes it could do with a refurbishment inside and out..but for its location which is central to all the restaurants in Pantai Cenang and the pools and general facilities - pretty good value. A little complaint though the bed is so hard. I woke up with a backache every morning!!! And the mosquitoes had a feast till we bought our insellant repellant sprays which weren't very Eco of us but kept them at bay! Generally a good place to stay.

We thank you for staying with us and your kind review of a good value resort.

The Frangipani is in the midst of its planning to have the next refurbishment and upgrading project with the hope to meet guests’ satisfaction and demand.

Mosquito fogging is an ongoing exercise that is being carried out by a team of people to help with the control of the environment for a healthier living.

In the mean time we look forward to welcome you again in the near future.

It's a great hotel, good swimmingpool, big rooms with a outdoor shower, thats very great.
It is easy to walk to Cenang where you can shop and eat.
It's near by the airport, and you can rent a scooter to discover Langkawi.
Breakfast is good, al lot of choice.
To eat in the hotel is more expensive than the restaurants in Cenang.

Room Tip: Garden View of Beach View than you have a outdoor shower.

It's not a 5 star resort but it was clean, the room was spacious ,very pleasant and really comfortable;we enjoyed the outside shower;it was very good value for money. Our room was far from the bar and swimming pool areas and it was literally a few steps away from the beach. Thus quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed the beach more than the pool ,but if you travel with small children, the pool is the ideal place to relax and keep an eye on them. The staff was really friendly and helpful and provided our extra requests with a smile every time.It is also only a pleasant walk away from the shops ,bars and restaurants. It needs a little face lift;especially the roofs of the bungalows. That would make a huge difference to the overall feeling of the resort.Ignore the negative comments about the breakfasts and what else. They are from people who are discontented anyway. We couldn't be happier. We also had great appreciation for the fact that the resort focuses on being green.

Room Tip: Choose a room away from the busy pool area. And the ones just behind the sea facing rooms are juts a...

This resort was one of about 6 we were considering for the trip, and while it does not have the nice sandy beaches that other do, (this hotels patch of beach is very course grain and not comfortable) it makes up for this with a calmness that grows on you, as does Langkawi itself.

FOOD: Was good, but the breakfast buffet (included) was in the middle somewhere, not impressive but served the purpose.

ROOM: Clean, well kept (we stayed in a villa) and enough room for us and our 2 kids, which despite the websites claims, you can have in the Villa, or any room for that matter, they aren't nearly as fussy when you actually get there.

POOL: MUCH smaller than the pictures show, but clean and well maintained. In the high season it would be nuts, but stick to the low season and you will be happy here. The saltwater pool is out of the way on the other side of the resort, so it doesn't get used much, and is more relaxing, but it also misses out on having the food and beverage servers nice and close like the chlorine pool.

STAFF: Most of the staff were great. There is a definite improvement that could be made here, as the front desk staff were not nearly as welcoming as one would expect. They all seem to be laid back and less worried about the customers than they should be. Perhaps its island life, but for me the staff at ANY hotel should be making their customers feel special, that's how you run a successful resort.

INTERNET: ONLY around the main building, Restaurant/Pool area. Nothing in the rooms, and once you get used to the cord-cutting nature of this, its a great thing.

In the end, if you plan on spending you vacation at the resort, you can find better than this, but if its a refuge you want while planning the next great Langkawi adventure, then this hotel will do just fine. We spent most of our days out and around the island, there is much to see and do for families or otherwise.

Final note: Do not miss the awesome little bar on the strip, made out of wooden pallets, 6 feet wide by 12 feet long (or there abouts) set up on the sidewalk in front of a convenience store. BEST service in Langkawi, and almost everything is 10Rm. Liking Bob Marley is a prerequisite though!!!!

Room Tip: Choose a Garden View villa over the Beach villa.... none of them are ON the beach... only difference...

Thank you for staying with us besides giving a reasonable review of our resort.

Breakfast is always one of the greatest challenges for the chef who is ever trying and ever satisfying the many taste buds of the various multicultural nationalities at any one seating.
Staff training is an ongoing process that is being continuously planned and emphasized with the objective of service improvement.

Meanwhile we look forward to your return to The Frangipani Langkawi in not too distant a future.

Nice but old resort. Nice private beach, big waves. Close to the restaurants, shops. Good service but should be better. Two swimming pools (chlorine and see water). Good breakfast. During stay J had a birthday and it was a big surprise that J find a big birthday-cake in my villa. It was a realy good time on Langkawi island !!

Room Tip: Villa is the best, close to the sea.

After reading some of the reviews before booking with this hotel, we were not sure what to expect in the way of service or accommodations. Having spent many years traveling and as many hotel nights I have come to appreciate pleasant surprises. This hotel and their staff are a jewel on Langkawi. No it is not a 5 star crown jewel, that some of the past reviewers I guess expected, but we found it be much better then these over priced cold resorts of phony friendliness. The location coupled with the privacy of small cottages made for a relaxing 6 days to rest and recuperate. we plan to visit again in the near future and would advise anyone looking for a prime location to base and rest while exploring Langkawi, then this should be your place. Do not fall into the trap spending too much time and effort reading or believing some of the supposed horror stories that I have seen posted on this site about this and other places. Those that post the worst stories are people that the Ritz Carlton could not please. One more point, we were never gouged by a taxi at anytime while there and used the taxis ordered by the front desk.
