Never having done snorkelling before we wanted to experience it in Langkawi even though we were aware it's not the best place in the world for visibility.
The beach was beautiful and the visibility really was quite good. I can imagine if it was more stormy then the water wouldn't have been so clear. There is no fresh water on the island, so make sure you take lots of water. Toilets are also not particularly nice, so make sure you take tissue and hand wipes!
East Marine were really organised and we found them a good option to go with. Pick ups were on time and boat trip to Payar was comfortable and relaxing. There was only about 20 people on our boat and we might have had a different experience if it was really busy. There was quite a lot of other tours that joined the beach but I understand May is quiet for Payar. This didnt matter too much though because the majority of the other tourists didnt go deeper than waist depth so wasn't too crowded deeper. Apparently in December and January this place gets really busy and you cannot move. Maybe this wouldn't be so enjoyable.
Our guide was great. After lunch he encouraged those in our group to go out with him and he'd take us to the best spots to see the best stuff. This was great! We saw lots of things; sea snakes, barracuda, reef sharks, clown fish, massive grouper etc. Was really awesome and got some great pictures.
Great first experience snorkelling.
