After reading the reviews about Bon Ton, the SO and I decided to splurge a bit and stay at the Bon Ton Resort. We stayed 2 nights mid-April. We had booked 1 night at Temple Tree (Colonial House), and another night at Bon Ton (White Frangipani). Had planned for a relaxing time, but..
Upon arrival, we were offered drinks and a welcome letter, and maps/activities about what there was to do in Langkawi. We were also "upgraded" to 2 nights in White Frangipani as there was a last minute cancellation. Front desk was nice upon arrival, but seemed distant and not as helpful the following days. Strolled through Temple Tree. The houses looked nice. In the afternoons there was quite a bit of noise due to construction.
The resort itself was different and unique.. with individual kepong styled Malay homes. We stayed in White Frangipani. It was much larger than the pictures showed. With all the windows opened during the day, it offered a nice breeze. There was a wooden outdoor bathtub, with a indoor shower room. Nicely furnished, complete with mosquito stuff. No beach on the resort, but Pantai Cenang nearby. Lovely pool. Free internet/printer in the wine room. The resort also houses an animal shelter (LASSie) for cats and dogs. The cats were free to run around the resort, which I didn't mind since I have cats at home. Only complaint was that some of the cats had fleas..
Breakfast was minimal, with a few slices of bread, cake, fruit, yogurt, milk, juice and tea/coffee already in the room. The fruit was refreshing, had the best tasting dragonfruit ever! It would have been nice to have fresh juice vs. bottled juice for the price being paid (and restaurant right on resort). Tried out Nam Restaurant. Expensive, small portions, but tasty. However, uncertain if that was the cause of my SO's "stomach flu/food poisoning?" as that 1st night, he had symptoms which incapacitated him.
The weather forecast lied to us :( Another downside during our stay in Langkawi were the thunderstorms on both nights! Complete with lightning, thunder, wind, and heavy rain. 1st night was the worst, rain dripping through the small holes above the bed woke me up several times.
Location was good, close by to the airport (you can see the planes taking off/arriving in the distance), beach (Pantai Cenang) and several attractions. As one of the managers said, you can't really get lost...
In the end, if the SO hadn't gotten sick, and no thunderstorms, I think I would have enjoyed the resort and Langkawi much more. Would have liked the chance to stay at Temple Tree (perhaps would not hear/feel the thunderstorms as much?). Would recommend the stay at Bon Ton for something different and unique, but make sure the weather is nice!
