Being from Japan, my wife and I know a thing or two about service. But the staff of the Tanjung Rhu never ceased to amaze us. In the way they were considerate, the way they were flexible to our needs, and they way they seemed genuinely happy to greet all the guests. Trust us, this is no easy feat.
We were on our honeymoon, and opted for the all inclusive plan which gave us not only three meals, but drinks(non-alcoholic) by the pool, room service and even high tea at the reading room. We ended up going to the reading room quite often as we loved the tranquility and the various selection of books, probably left by previous guests.
Each night, we looked forward to going to the Rhu restaurant to have our dinner, the quality of the food was top notch and the service was immaculate. The staff also remembered the faces of the guests and their preferences, which made the experience feel even more unique and special. The fact that a live band played across the Rhu (at the reading room) also added to the atmosphere.
As mentioned by previous reviewers, the reception area was nothing special but we were pleasantly surprised by the spaciousness of the room and how there was a nice, romantic bathroom window which opened up to connect to the living room. And the balcony ahead of that.
Each day, after hours of sunbathing and swimming, we would come back to a room filled with luxurious, exotic scents due to scented candles lit by the cleaning staff.
Now to the most important thing, the beach/pools. Since we went during off season, we never had to worry about not getting a sunchair or a shortage of towels. There are three pools at the Tanjung Rhu, and the resort had a beautiful private beach where you could swim in peace without feeling crowded. It felt like a private paradise.
There is also a game room above the Saffron restaurant with pool tables, a dart board and several other games. It was a nice way to pass time during the occasional rainshowers.
One other thing before we conclude our review--the Tanjung Rhu has it's very own non-official mascot, a friendly(?) lizard named Jake. He lives in the pond and streams within the resort, and is rumored to have two girlfriends, one who lives with him in the resort and one within the mangrove behind the resort. We had the pleasure of meeting Jake and his resident girlfriend nearly everyday.
If we were to point out something negative, the excursions are slightly more expensive than the regular tours provided within the island, and the staff keep the rooms freezing cold--it was 15 degrees celsius when we checked the air conditioner! But the room temperature can easily be changed, and of course, that will not keep us from returning to the Tanjung Rhu again.

we spent 3 nights here all inclusive as part of our honeymoon and loved it. the room was big, clean and luxurious. the location is beautiful with a great beach and fantastic views. the pools are perfect and we enjoyed indulging in their spa treatments. the food was varied and delicious and the staff were exceptional - always helpful and friendly. we thought it was exceptional value and got much more for our money than during our next 3 days at the Datai. we loved our time here and would highly recommend it for a completely relaxing holiday.

Our main purpose of the trip was to getaway from the city and work fr some private times together.. Thus we chose to stay at somewhere quiet. This resort fits our requirements perfectly. It is a distance away from the rest of the hotels, about 30mins of travelling time from the airport and it has a private beach, so private that we saw very few people on the beach..

We had the Bayu Senja sea facing room which is about 80sqm. Although it was not the newest hotel room I have seen in my life, I could say that it was very comfortable in size. It has two balconies, one facing the inside of the resort with trees and lakes, the other facing the beautiful sea. The room has a living area with TV, another private sofa area and a good size toilet with double sinks and bath tub. In all, the room is really comfortable and we were very pleased. No sign of insects and the room was very well kept..

The service was excellent most of the time, although we were quite disappointed with the speed of the in room dining. Twice we had to wait for more than 30mins and had to call to check for our orders. They also called us half an hour earlier than what we requested one morning for our breakfast, which we were a bit annoyed.. The staff at the resort were all very friendly and personal. They remembered our last name and always ready to smile and greet us. This is something bigger establishments always fail to do.

We strongly encourage guests to take the All-In package as the food and drinks are all of good standards. It is really worth while paying for the All In package and to eat like a king ! We like The Rhu and The Safron restaurants, so much that you really dont feel like going out of the resort to eat. For local and Asian food, we went to the Sands restaurant at the resort, although we felt the place need some lighting even if its during the day...

There really isnt much to do if you are looking for excitement.. besides some non motorised seasports, renting of bicycle to go to eat durians and see the waterfall with their very friendly guide Shamir.. The main pool is beautiful and they even have a salt water pool...

We were also disappointed with the limited TV channels they provide.. Besides AXN and ESPN sports, there was not much else to watch on TV.

In all, we thoroughly enjoyed the 3 days 2 nights stay there and highly recommend for couples who value good service, quiet environment, good food and unforgettable romantic getaway...

Our first visit to Langkawi and, after a rather fraught experience of a well reviewed hotel in KL, we did wonder what awaited us.

It is tempting to say the place is dreadful - just so other people don't go there and spoil it - but we had better not!

Yes, if you were really picky, you could say the rooms need renovating - we looked at three in total. But this is really a matter of style rather than them being 'worn out'. The warm, humid climate is going to have an effect on rooms, especially those facing the 'jungley' centre. But they are comfortable, practical and large.

The best 'all inclusive' food we've ever come across. Absolutely great, with something for everybody's taste. Yes, you do pay for alcohol, but there were special offers on some wine (90 RM for an NZ Sauvignon Blanc is very good for a 5 star hotel in Asia!) and two happy hours a day (before and after dinner) with half price drinks.

From top to bottom the staff were great. A really passionate and forward thinking GM who could teach a few CEOs about developing an excellent organisational culture. A chef who asks what food you like and prepares a private lunch for you at no cost. Waiting staff who take the trouble to ask what you need and talk to you. Even the ground staff will have a greeting for you and do what they can to help. It's unfair to name individuals and I'm sure all guests will have their favourites, but it's clear that staff stay on much longer here than other hotels and we look forward to meeting our new friends again next year and making them old friends.

Our tips? Take some binoculars to catch sight of the wildlife. Bird lovers will really enjoy this location, as will lizard spotters! We are told that the hotel gets very busy December through to February, so service may be a bit more stretched then. Driving is easy in Langkawi, but we found that a taxi with an English speaking driver worked best for us and was very reasonable. The cable car is a must, but Kuah (apart from the night market) isn't much to write home about.

I booked this hotel at the last minute after being enormously disappointed by the WESTIN Langkawi where we only staid –waisted- a couple of hours. The Tanjung Rhu management sent their van to allow us to escape from the ocean of mediocrity.

As a repeat customer I was given a marvellous quiet room with views on both inner garden and swimming pool. Beside the ugly stairway leading to our room and the lack of maintenance within the spa area – the 2 saunas were out of order and bathrooms in this area leave a lot to be desired-, our 3 days at this expensive property –USD390 a day inclusive of tax and buffet breakfast- were nice.

Very discrete works were on their way in some part of the hotel but never created any disturbances to us.

Their new Olympic sized pool is simply extraordinary with a gorgeous view on surrounding islands.
