Felt compelled to write this review to try to help balance out the overly generous reviews ( which swayed me into staying here) as they are very misleading. My partner and I did a lot of research for our holiday as it was a very special occasion for us. We first stayed for 5 nights at the Datai which was AMAZING but then moved on to the Tanjung Rhu Resort for the last 5 nights and were very disappointed. Apart from the breathtaking view of the beach and islands this resort is VERY tired and dated. It is also dirty - our bathroom had a terrible smell which we finally discovered was from the moldy grout in the sinks and shower and while the towels were clean, they all had a musty odour and had stains. Not surprising when you discover that housekeeping is a staff member who lugs a plastic bag of towels up the steps to your room (there are no lifts and the stairwells have peeling paint and feel like a suburban apartment block). The service was also pretty bad - grumpy and incompetent staff around the pools and it takes forever to get service and the concierge was (undeservably) arrogant and was always picking at his face and nose while dealing with you in a lacklustre manner. And the food...the morning buffet's are just awful, real 'package deal holiday' feel to them - milk and juice are not on ice and while there is a huge selection, it is all soggy and tasteless and the strange spaghetti bolognaise and other savoury offerings really look like they have been recycled from the night before. The only reasonable food is at the Saffron Restaurant but if you are foodies like us you will find this resort very, very under par. On another note, if you are new to Langkawi prepare yourself for the rubbish and filthy beaches. Among car tyres, bottles, wrappers on the beaches we also found a syringe on the Tanjung Rhu beach and stopped swimming in the murky sea water in fear of stepping on something. Finally, to try to ease our frustration we used a few of the non-motorised water equipment available at the resort (as we did at the Datai) only to discover that the resort charges for each use!! Unbelievable, especially for a supposed 5 star hotel. This is more like a 3 star so if you are looking to be pampered and like good quality items and attention to detail I recommend that you do not stay here - try the Datai, that's how 5 star is done.
