A very long overdue review of a fantastic stay...
We stayed at the Tanjung Rhu for 4 nights as part of a 2 week honeymoon in Langkawi. It was without exception a fantastic place to stay. This was the first hotel we stayed in on arrival in Langkawi and after an easy transfer we arrived at Tangjung Rhu and in room check in- what an amazing idea that is, certainly takes the edge off the flight. We booked a Damai courtyard room, which although it was the basic room exceeded our expectations in every way, large, luxurious feel, superb bed and bathroom. Our stay was on an all inclusive basis which we felt was excellent value for money, there is a good choice of restaurants, all serving fantastic food and plenty of it. I love fish and was not disappointed one bit. There is food to suit most tastes, I particularly liked the Malay influenced dishes but there are also plenty of med/ western dishes available. The setting is stunning, the beach and sea warm and inviting. The pools are beautifully designed and never too crowded and drink service by the pool is excellent. There is also a games room with pool table, table football, darts and a library. Service was exceptional, the place was spotless and they seem to have perfected the art of service that is attentive without being in any way annoying. Alcohol is not included on the AI option but we found drinks to be reasonably priced especially for a resort such as this. We only booked for 4 nights as it is quite an isolated resort and you will end up eating and drinking on site, we both wished we had booked a longer stay and will definitely be heading back at some point in the future.
By way of comparison if people are considering other destinations in Langkawi, our trip took us to the Datai for 3 nights. I can honestly say that although the location is wonderful- rainforest, monkeys, snakes etc the whole Datai experience was disappointing for us, especially compared to the Tanjung Rhu. We felt that the food at the Datai was nice but expensive. We had a villa (which was beautiful inside) with a plunge pool which was dirty on our arrival then the pump broke and flooded the area. Fuses in our villa kept tripping meaning that we would come back to a very warm villa (air con was off) and a warm fridge and no lights. This happened on a couple of occasions and although someone came to fix it reasonably promptly it was very annoying. The staff were very friendly however and the buggy rides to the restaurant from the villa were a lot of fun as was the cooking course. Although on balance I did enjoy the Datai I would not go back, the things that went wrong were very irritating and not what you expect after paying a lot of money to stay there.
The final place we stayed was Casa del Mar which we also loved. It is significantly less expensive than either of the other options but represented really great value for money. Staff were friendly, food great, fantastic happy hour promotions on drinks, lovely beach (not private but didn't matter) and lovely room- we upgraded to a suite which was great, really big and comfy and clean. Nice touches such news review delivered to your room and complimentary iced water and fresh fruit by the pool. Also free internet access and library. Location close to busy bar area and local eateries which was a great way to finish of the holiday, very cheap food to be had and pearls were a bargain in the local shops.
If we were going again we would definitely revisit Tanjung Rhu if we were feeling flush and Casa del Mar for a great quality less expensive option, have no interest in returning to the Datai. We have been on similar 'luxury beach holidays' in the Carribean and Mauritius and in my opinion Langkawi (and Tanjung Rhu in particular) is better than anywhere else we have been, for value for money, fabulous weather, amazing location and resort, superb food, great service and relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommended.
