“Wonderful hotel, our gold standard.”

Tanjung Rhu Resort

A very long overdue review of a fantastic stay...

We stayed at the Tanjung Rhu for 4 nights as part of a 2 week honeymoon in Langkawi. It was without exception a fantastic place to stay. This was the first hotel we stayed in on arrival in Langkawi and after an easy transfer we arrived at Tangjung Rhu and in room check in- what an amazing idea that is, certainly takes the edge off the flight. We booked a Damai courtyard room, which although it was the basic room exceeded our expectations in every way, large, luxurious feel, superb bed and bathroom. Our stay was on an all inclusive basis which we felt was excellent value for money, there is a good choice of restaurants, all serving fantastic food and plenty of it. I love fish and was not disappointed one bit. There is food to suit most tastes, I particularly liked the Malay influenced dishes but there are also plenty of med/ western dishes available. The setting is stunning, the beach and sea warm and inviting. The pools are beautifully designed and never too crowded and drink service by the pool is excellent. There is also a games room with pool table, table football, darts and a library. Service was exceptional, the place was spotless and they seem to have perfected the art of service that is attentive without being in any way annoying. Alcohol is not included on the AI option but we found drinks to be reasonably priced especially for a resort such as this. We only booked for 4 nights as it is quite an isolated resort and you will end up eating and drinking on site, we both wished we had booked a longer stay and will definitely be heading back at some point in the future.

By way of comparison if people are considering other destinations in Langkawi, our trip took us to the Datai for 3 nights. I can honestly say that although the location is wonderful- rainforest, monkeys, snakes etc the whole Datai experience was disappointing for us, especially compared to the Tanjung Rhu. We felt that the food at the Datai was nice but expensive. We had a villa (which was beautiful inside) with a plunge pool which was dirty on our arrival then the pump broke and flooded the area. Fuses in our villa kept tripping meaning that we would come back to a very warm villa (air con was off) and a warm fridge and no lights. This happened on a couple of occasions and although someone came to fix it reasonably promptly it was very annoying. The staff were very friendly however and the buggy rides to the restaurant from the villa were a lot of fun as was the cooking course. Although on balance I did enjoy the Datai I would not go back, the things that went wrong were very irritating and not what you expect after paying a lot of money to stay there.

The final place we stayed was Casa del Mar which we also loved. It is significantly less expensive than either of the other options but represented really great value for money. Staff were friendly, food great, fantastic happy hour promotions on drinks, lovely beach (not private but didn't matter) and lovely room- we upgraded to a suite which was great, really big and comfy and clean. Nice touches such news review delivered to your room and complimentary iced water and fresh fruit by the pool. Also free internet access and library. Location close to busy bar area and local eateries which was a great way to finish of the holiday, very cheap food to be had and pearls were a bargain in the local shops.

If we were going again we would definitely revisit Tanjung Rhu if we were feeling flush and Casa del Mar for a great quality less expensive option, have no interest in returning to the Datai. We have been on similar 'luxury beach holidays' in the Carribean and Mauritius and in my opinion Langkawi (and Tanjung Rhu in particular) is better than anywhere else we have been, for value for money, fabulous weather, amazing location and resort, superb food, great service and relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommended.

“Lovely Stay at the Tanjung Rhu”

Tanjung Rhu Resort

The Tanjung Rhu was a lovely & beautiful resort. We stayed at this resort at the end of March 2008 & with the help of Trip Advisor we were not disappointed with our choice. The resort has (in my opinion) the best beach on the island. The pictures posted both on Trip Advisor and the hotel website are exactly as they seem.

The resort itself is finely maintained from the rain forest gardens to the clear white sand of Tanjung Rhu. This is a place to recharge, rest & relax. We filled most of our days by the Sands pool and going to the spa. The staff at this resort is what makes it both lovely and attentive.

The Tanjung Rhu Resort itself is in need of minor maintance. The rooms, pool area, restaurants are not what you expect from a 5 star resort. This is the only reason I personally would not give it the highest rating. Our room was cleaned well daily.

We did choose the all inclusive option; which is not all inclusive american style (buffet). Meals were served restaurant style with the exception of breakfast which was buffet but with a good selection, catering to all nationalities. Please note there is a dress code for the Rhu restaurant & reservations must be made for all 3 dining rooms in the evenings.

We spent a few days away from the resort visting the famous Langkawi Cable Car (which is not to be missed) and a day cruise with Blue Water Star Sailing, which was magic!! We chose to go with this private yacht charter because of the fantastic reviews from Trip Advisor & we were not disappointed. Eva and her staff were exceptional hosts. The mouthwatering homemade food alone was worth the trip! Eva's knowledge of Langkawi & the islands are clearly apparent with the routes she personally chooses to suite each cruise.

Overall, we had a wonderful stay at the Tanjung Rhu. Would we go back? Yes. Throughout our stay we saw maintance being done; clearly the management are aware of customer feedback & are doing something about it. The Tanjung Rhu Resort has wonderful staff who are well trained with customer service and this alone will offset the slight criticism above.

“Loved this hotel I”

Tanjung Rhu Resort

I loved this hotel, it was very peaceful, only noise birds singing in the jungle. The hotel is very understated, very in keeping with the jungle, lots of wood used everywhere, rustic. Very relaxed feeling. Two great swimming pools where you can do lengths - hard to find these days, and no chlorine. Views are amazing. We were all inclusive and worried about it, but there are 3 restaurants and all served up great food, and I am a foodie, lots of variety. Staff just great, as you expect in Malaysia, young staff so friendly, chatty funny, intelligent, well presented. We left £60 in hotel safe and they called us at the ferry terminal to tell us and credited the money to our credit card. We will definately be back soon, next time for longer. It is good holiday splitting this with the Rasa Sayang in Penang, from one excellent hotel to another, that is how I want to spend the next 10 years.

My wife & I visited Tanjung Rhu for 5 nights from 8/3, leaving 13/3 having spent 9 nights at the Pelangi resort in the south of Langkawi. We had stayed at TR before in 2001 for our honeymoon and were delighted to go back and we found it a very good combination with Pelangi where we dined out of the hotel every night and TR where due to its remote location we didn't leave the hotel at all. The hotel and location are beautiful and having been there before didn't reduce the impact of the views across the Andaman Sea to Thailand. We spent our days around the new Sands pool which had been built after our last visit and is an excellent addition to the facilities- the pool is c45 metres long and there was no problem if you wanted a swim as opposed to just bobbing about in the water. It is also right on the beach to so you can combine the 2 if that suits you. Loungers were great and the service from the bar with our green flags was very good. We helped ourselves to towels also- 4 between us and had no need for the beach towels we had taken from home which we will remember for next time. We managed to go to the fitness centre each day which had weights (roughly half a dozen machines and numerous free weights), 2 adult treadmills, a child treadmill, 2 bikes, a cross trainer and a rowing machine. It wasn't busy and we didn't have any issues getting on machines, though there weren't many. We would then have the buffet breakfast which handily went on until 11am which helped us go to the gym, then get ready for breakfast- the selection of foods was the best we had seen from a buffet breakfast in terms of quantity and the quality was good too.

For dinner we would visit either Rhu (fine dining), Saffron (mediterranean) or Sands (Asian) and always had a bottle of their house white (one of 6 red & white house wines offered) which was roughly £17.50 for the bottle with glasses of wine coming in at c£4 each, beer at c£2 a glass, and cocktails are c£3 each. These prices were more expensive than Pelangi but as the board basis we were on covered all our food and non alcoholic beverages, we still felt it offered excellent value. This also enabled us to sample their lovely mocktails and plenty of water / soft drinks during the day which we probably would have been less inclined to do if we were paying for them by the glass.

The main bars were at the Reading Room opposite Rhu and at the Sands pool bar- the latter offered 2 happy hours per day between 6.30 and 7.30 and from 10-11 which we were able to make good use of.

Our room was well appointed with decent cupboard space, but a little less storage space overall than we had at Pelangi- we also were very near the natural seawater pool so we had a minimal view and our balcony was quite small. Fantastic bath & shower and a good room overall, though we did find a couple of cockroaches in a cupboard and were nibbled by mosquitoes a little, thouhg not enough for it to be an issue.

I also experienced a very relaxing visit to their spa where I had a jacuzzi/steam room/ sauna before having a rainshower massage (wonderful and very different) and then an aromatherapy massage and foot rub- extremely relaxing with the above costing £50 in total- not bad for 2 and a half hours of pampering I felt and this was discounted as I had the treatments prior to 3 pm.

Overall, a superb location with breathtaking views and we were delighted to have visited again 7 years after our 1st trip and will have to go back again...

“Beautiful Tanjung Rhu”

We visited Tanjung Rhu at the beginning of March for just over a week and we had a fantastic time. The beach and scenery around the hotel is fantastic, lush and very beautiful. The staff are a major asset to the hotel and are very welcoming and helpful. We were picked up from the airport by the hotel (how they knew which flight we were on I have no idea) and taken straight to our bedroom to check in which is a lovely touch. We were lucky enough to have a room upgrade and so had a fantastic view of the beach and sea and the room was huge!

We fully intended to visit the waterfalls, the mangrove and go up the cable car, but in fact we never left the resort. It was so relaxing we never had the inclination, indeed we never made it to breakfast once!

After reading the reviews on here I was expecting the resort to be run down and although a few areas require a touch of paint I wouldn't say it was run down and if it was you can forgive it as its so lovely.

You must go all inclusive as the food is excellent and drink not too expensive for a hotel, the saffron was our favourite and the pool side lunches were great.
