4 not totally convinced stars. 4. The very nice service pushed up the grade.
There were just too many problems in our way of a truly relaxing stay and deserving of a top grade. Also, the family pool is actually rather small and there is no shallow area for the small kids to frolic around in. Also, travelling as a family with a small child there are really only 2 realistical options for rooms to stay in. Either a lower Melaleuca pavilion or a beach villa. Now that´s a huge gap in anyones book.
Point in case is that such a high end resort should not have these many issues. Of course there can be the odd thing that goes wrong, but that´s it. Also, the villas are quite a bit worn so i wonder if they have any refurbishments planned in the near future???
The hotel is spread out alongside a (man made?) beach and spans 1,5 km´s so the buggy service is much appreciated. Although a lot of the times it is actually faster to just walk to where you´re going on the beach. It´s situated on Langkawi, an island in the north-western part of Malaysia close to Thailand.
Interesting fact nr 1, they actually started planting/planning the grounds 7 years before opening the resort so it was already lush from the get go.
Interesting fact nr 2, some of the wooden walkways are actually made from 19th century old ships as the wood is so resistant to moisture.
Interesting fact nr 3: Instead of using some nasty pest control spray on the property they actually have natural pest control ie cats! So be prepared to meet some very friendly and sweet cats around. Huge hit with the toddler!
A swift 20-25 min´s from the airport and with a private beach. Quite far from any nightlife hustle and bustle which we appreciate.
Room (read villa):
I had originally requested Melaleuca pavilion nr 2 as my first hand choice. Nr 1 as my 2nd as those are (i do believe) the only lower pavilions to actually have an ocean view. They are also very close to the family pool. But due to a large wedding party arriving a few days after us the staff wisely suggested to move to the other side of the resort to nr 13.
But upon arriving there we realised that there was no way that our toddler could stay in the huge bathroom area as we could not make the room dark.
So, we were shown a villa (nr 17) and after seeing that there was no turning back...Also, there is a spa room directly adjacent to the bedroom where our daughter could sleep.
Now, the beach villas are huge! At a whopping 250sqm you will never feel claustrophobic. Plus you will have a lovely outdoor area with your own plunge pool/jacuzzi, daybed, diningarea and outdoor shower. Plus of course the benefit of being directly on the beach with nothing in between you and the ocean.
The detailing in the villa was spectacular! Everything from the lightfixtures, furniture and even the AC grids are all specially made for the property and in a lovely Moorish style.
The bed is very soft by any standard. And extremely soft by Asian standards!
Of all the things i loved about the decor, the room that really stood out for me was the bathroom with its positively enormous, and surprisingly comfortable, bathtub.
Another neat feature was the fact that you can literally move walls in the house to divide the space, or fell more or less private/bright.
The grounds around the property are lovely and well maintained with both a lush garden as well as some relaxig water features.
BUT, i have saved the best detail for last...When you pull the curtains to the side in the morning you will be presented to the most spectacular panoriamic view of the beach and the ocean. Priceless!
Oh for those of us that simply can´t part with our laptops i am happy to tell you that out on the deck next to the ginormous daybed there is a plug you can use. Nice touch!
Villa 17 is located on the south side of the resort, close to the lilly pond. I do believe that it is more quiet on this side as the family pool, restaurants and spa is on the other side. You also have some gorgeous cliff formations right in front of you. The only detail that is not great is that there is a concrete factory far left. Now if you don´t stand there and directly stare at it it´s not that bad. But one still knows it´s there, it´s ugly and it´s really too bad as noone really wants to see that on their vacation. But i decided to try to imagine that it´s a Scottish castle which actually helps...
We did after a lot of problems with nr 17 move next door to nr 18. Same, same just mirror opposite.
Very friendly true Four Seasons staff. Always helpful throughout the resort.
Mas at the Kids club was really sweet and very good with our daughter and she had so much fun there despite not actually being of Kids club age!
Ayu and her Sea Secrets at the Spa is more than recommendable!
Michael at rooms divisions really went above and beyond in his effort to improve our stay!
Always there to help with whatever your needs are. If it´s not illegal they won´t say no!
Breakfast selection is not huge, but it is perfect and of a very high quality.
Lunch can be had at either the Kelapa Grill which is a relaxed affair by the family pool/beach, the Serai (Italian/grill) or if you don´t travel with children at the adult pool (private dining)
Dinner at Kelapa grill, the Serai and also Ikan-Ikan which is a traditional Malay restaurant.
Plus there are numerous options for picnic´s, dinner on the beach and what have you.
Private dining was very good. Always served on time and with food still in a good state. Loved how they for instance didn´t put the meat on the bun until they served us when we had ordered burgers. Soggy bread is never fun... Plus we somehow never felt like dressing up enough to go to a restaurant in the evening. We were to cozy being where we were.
Gorgeus! And huge! They do normally have an age limit of 18 years and older for massages. But our 2½ year old had a 30 min massage and absolutely loved it while i was having a 60 min Asian Fusion massage which was fine, nothing more.
My husband then had a Man Maintenance one day which he found just ok, while i went for the Sea Secrets which is a 3 hour marine inspried multi treatments treat which i highly recommend!
Also, the husband went for a mani/pedi which, he claims, is the best he has ever had anywhere.
There are 2 fresh water pools, one family pool and one adult pool.
The adult pool is pretty much just a lap pool, but overlooking the ocean right next to the beach. There are some very nice and private dividers so that couple who which to have some quiet time on their own can do so. You can also eat there, they order the food from private dining.
The familypool is next to the water activity centre and the Kelapa grill. Surprisingly small, but very beautiful. I was however surprised to find out that there is actually no section in it that´s suitable for toddlers and small children. What kind of family were they planning to cater to? Teenagers only?
Very nice! Staff seems to be very dedicated, calm and friendly. They also have a nice range of both indoors and outdoors activities for the children to do. Our girls loved it and we travelled home with some very nice artwork.
Large! The sand is quite coarse though and there is unfortunately a lot of pieces of plastic rubbish on it. Must be a lot of stuff blowing up on shore from the ocean. Too bad as it spoils the feeling of being on a tropical beach somewhat.
The water is increidibly warm and the water doesn´t become too depp too quickly. The bottom is sandy and nice.
Very good selection of both jewelry, clothes, arts and crafts a just general things one might just need on vacation!
Things to do:
I wish we had done the Mangrove tour with the resorts naturalists as they are really inspired! They said to do it in the morning before the tide had turned.
Things to think about:
*Bugs also love the resort so do bring creams and medication if you´re sensitive!!! Make sure that housekeeping put those little electrical anti-mosquito devices in your room at night as they really seem to help. If you do forget to bring stuff then the resort has a very nice Dr on site that can help you out.
*Also, be VERY careful when you walk around the place at night time as there are a lot of steps up and down and the lighting is too sparse in places!!!! I fell rather badly and strained my foot our first night!
*You may also, for the same reason, want to leave your buggy at home as i do believe that it´s just too much trouble to haul it around.
*If you want a lovely view be careful of which room you request!
