I stayed at the berjaya for 4 nights after travelling from thailand.
I was unsure what to expect from this hotel but enjoyed it thoroughly.
I have stayed at the tanjung sanctuary hotel in langkawi and loved it there so it had a alot to live upto.
The main area reception is very nice and reminded me of cuban style receptions that I have been to. Reception staff were very informative and friendly and helped to move the room a little nearer to the action because of mobility problems.
There is a shuttle service thats runs so that if you dont want to walk through the exstensive grounds you can just call from your room and they will pick you up and take you anywhere in the resort including to the oriental village for shopping.
The bungalows are widespread thoughout the resort and have a very rustic malay style charm to them. I stayed in a superior room and it was very nice, if you are expecting complete luxury for say a honeymoon or some kind of special occasion I think maybe this would not be the place for you. After coming from thaialnd and phiphi island which is total luxury this was a big contrast but a pleasant one.
The rooms that we stayed with were a little worn and and the bathroom looked a little tired but they were busy painting and rennovating very quietly whilst we were there, so rooms may be nicer now. You have a small balcony which to sit and watch the variety of wild life, our bungalow was in the forest and Im so glad it was and not on the water as the wildlife is what makes this resort special. The rustic charm means that the wildlife lives happily amongst the hotel. We saw monkeys exotic birds and to my delight a flying lemur (very rare) It took quite a shine to me and wanted to get closer, don't be afraid they are primates and are very gentle and inquisitive. Take note not to feed the monkeys as they do apear in droves and will do anything to get in your room. They will come and take a look at you if you just talk to them without the ordeal of trying to escape when they all want the one piece of banana you have...I thank goodness learnt this not by personal experience but from a tourist.
Normal facilities such as tv miniar and coffee/tea making facilities. If you are as tight as me you will take a trip to the oriental village and stcok up on all the munchies and drinks which are a 1/5 price of the resort shop. The maid cleaned the room like i have never seen before every inch of the room was scrubbed.
The thai and oriental resteraunts are both amazing and I can not resommend them enough...good value too! The sticky sweet and sour chicken is to die for!!!! The Thai was on a jetty out in the sea on stilts and has amazing views, the food is fresh and very tasty and very reasonably priced.
The buffet resteruant is a bit well like a buffet...canteen..chairs and tables too close together and you feel like you are eating on the run. dont go all inclusive! The breakfast was adequate but nothing special.
the bungalows on water look amazing but I think the public areas make me think that you would be disappointed if you paid so much for one.
Cocktails were amazing!
The pool area is lovely and there are plenty of beds to lie and relax, the beach too is lovely but after being spoilt with the vista at phiphi it was nowhere near as beautiful.
Spa was very reasonable by british standards and a lovely relaxing experience.
We went on the trip to the cable car at the oriental village booked at the oreintal village not at hotel and it was well worth it, omg the view was amazing, I am scared of heights and even I had to get over it and just appreciate the wonder of the view and the mountains.
Overall the berjaya is a decent middle range hotel, the rustic charm of the place is what makes it special. It isn't manicured and slick and that's what makes it work. You feel like you are in the middle of the jungle with all its wonderous sounds and sights which are enchanting.
