To be clear, the Datai is a five star hotel. It just doesn't deserve its' outstanding reviews on this website for the following reasons:
1. It is overpriced (about £200 a nights on their website). I stayed in better hotels in Malaysia and Thailand for half the price.
2. The rooms are disappointingly small. We travelled through the region for two weeks and stayed in rooms which were double the size (suites) and half the price. The same went for our balcony which wasn't even big enough to hold two seats beside each other.
3. The receptionists (not the concierge who were fantastic) were not very helpful. They did not point out that breakfast was not included in our room rate and did not apologise for charging for it separately when we left. The lack of communication was compounded by the breakfast staff who had assured me breakfast was in fact included.
4. The peacefulness was disturbed as about a third of the site was a construction site. There were no apologies made for the noise, and no concessions.
On a positive note, the location (remote rainforest by a nice beach (although not swimmable when we were there due to jellyfish)) is fantastic. The nature walks (many of which are free) are a really good introduction to the wildlife (not just monkeys, but I won't spoil it for you!). The food is very good and on a par with UK prices. We especially enjoyed the European restaurant in the Andaman and rated that higher than the Thai restaurant in the Datai.
In summary, I would only recommed the Datai to someone eager to impress and who has no conscience about paying for overpriced accommodiation. If you want the same location, better swimming pools and bars and equally same good food, then stay at the Andaman next door for half the price.
