“Top Class”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

My partner and I recently stayed at the Datai in Langkawi and we were very impressed by the attentive service and overall quality of this property. We are both seasoned travellers and have visited a very large number of hotels and resorts mostly in professional capacities and the attention to detail was impeccable at the Datai. The surroundings are just spectacular and the serenity at night was quite unexpected. Not a sound of cars or aeroplanes, the only noise filling the air at night were the sounds of the rainforest or the piano from the Lobby Lounge. The food was exquisite throughout and a few different outlets to choose from. Very secluded and it never felt crowded. The service was impeccable and the team at Datai after a day or two already felt like friends, it was actually sad to leave because it felt like you were leaving dear friends behind. We could not fault our experience, if anything as we were staying for quite a number of nights a few lighter meal options in the restaurants would have been preferable. All-in-all a Top Class experience and we wish the Team at the Datai a successful high season ahead and a memorable 20th Celebration.

Room Tip: We were in the main building and quite liked it as it meant that it was close to the breakfast room...

We did not stay there, but went for tea and explored the hotel grounds. Set in a jungle, the hotel setting is beautiful and the beach looks like one of the best on the island. The service was impeccable.

We stayed in a deluxe villa situated in the jungle about a 5 minute walk from the main hotel and 10 minutes from the beach (this did include some steep sections but if you're not very mobile you can always call for an electric buggy!). The villa was exceptionally well appointed and very large - balcony over looked a stream and was great for viewing the wildlife and listening to all the sounds of the jungle. The 3 hotel restaurants were good and retained the jungle atmosphere (covered with ceiling fans although the sides are open the elements). The Gulai House was a great experience - middle of the jungle which you reach on an electric buggy. You can request an electric buggy ride rather than walking at anytime (a good option after your dinner in the dark!)

You WILL see lots of wildlife but nothing too scary - we saw monkeys, water monitors, bats, wild hogs and lots of butterflies - free of charge nature walks with an experience guide are provided every morning and evening. My wife is terrified of spiders and although we saw two they were far enough away for it not to be a problem. The nature walk guide did say that all the tarantulas were hiding at that time so it may be different at other times of the year (we visited in late Aug/early Sep). The private beach is wonderful and you sometimes felt like you had the place to yourself.

Service is excellent and a real treat for a quiet relaxing holiday. The hotel is very isolated and is a good half hour away from other areas. You can walk along the beach to the Andaman Hotel although we never did this.

Our only "down" point was a tour we took via the hotel which included a jungle trek and a swim at a small waterfall - on arrival at the waterfall we were greeted by the sight of rubbish which the guide suspected was from a party of either locals or hotel staff. He was very upset about this and it did detract from our trek and overall experience. Not sure who's rubbish it actually was but the jungle is one of the highlights of this island and whoever was responsible should realise the damage they may doing.

Apart from this one minor blip our stay was thoroughly enjoyable and if you're after some luxury and jungle exclusion this may take some beating. All rooms looked nice but opt for a villa if you can.

I have never cried leaving a hotel before I came to the Datai! This is without question the best hotel I have ever stayed in. Heaven on earth.

The highlight here is the amazing staff. They are second to none. They are the friendliest people, nothing is too much trouble and you're always greeted with a smile. On my the day of my birthday, they delivered a towel shaped as an elephant to our door! Every day they knock on your door to give you chocolate truffles and all staff know you by name as soon as you arrive and take the time to ask you questions. They make the whole experience really special.

The beach at the Datai is incredible. A huge stretch of white sand all for the guests of the hotel. We used the kayaks which was a real bonus! The beach is a little way from the main lobby building and rooms but there's always someone waiting to give you a ride on a golf buggy through the rainforest - a fun experience.

The location is remote, but that's a good thing as you never have to leave the hotel. The restaurants are lovely! Especially the Pavilion which sits on a treehouse like structure and serves really good Thai food. The restaurant manager will come and have a chat with you, so friendly.

One things we loved was going on Irshad's wildlife tours of the rainforest. He was amazing. Malaysia's answer to David Attenborough. We learnt so much from him. And it was all free!

Cannot recommend this place enough. But leaving is not easy :) We will definitely be coming back.

There are certain places in the world that all of us put down on our "bucket list" to visit and personally The Daitai in Langkawi has been on that list for years. Stories from friends, write ups and stunning pictures on travel websites had created the "mystique" around The Datai and the little island of Langkawi. Located in the middle of the beautiful rain forest and only a 35 min drive from the airport, you are transported away in no time to world where time almost stands still. We arrived and were warmly greeted with welcome juice checking in as we sat in the lobby lounge looking over the "upper pool" deck and the forest. Our room was excellent, spacious and a well designed using timber to create the base style with high quality furniture. We quickly made our way to the beach club walking through the neatly designed paths admiring the nature and listing to locals making welcoming sounds. The beach, which is almost "private" greeted us and as our feet touched the warm waters of Andaman sea we quickly settled in for a very relaxing time. The Beach Club has a nice pool and an excellent dining area, the pizza was first rate, with a few local monkey's paying us a visit sitting in the tree's and enjoying their vegetarian meal from the bushes. As the evening drew close we made our way to the boutique gym to work off the pizza or maybe to prepare for dinner at our selected Thai restaurant. The Thai dining room is located by the upper pool with views of the forest and in alfresco dining style. Service and food was great, subtle flavors to compliment our wine. The upper pool is also the venue for the Dining Room where a great breakfast is served, the freshness of tropical fruits, warm bakery items and even a little Champagne greets you!
As the days faded away we were faced with reality of having to return home to normal life and as we departed the friendly staff bid us farewell and see you soon! I can't wait to return, the mystique of the Datai is well and alive and a joy to visit, perfect for rest, romance and relaxation with great hospitality added in. Enjoy.....

Room Tip: If you really want to upgrade the stay, try out the beach Villa's - amazing............

Spent 5 nights at the Datai at the begining of September and OMG what an experience. The hotel itself was amazing. We booked one of the villas in the rainforest and I actually started giggling when we were shown to our room.

Great restaurant choices to choose from, although I must say that the Guli House was by far my favourtie. The chefs were always ahppy to cookup things we requested that were bnot on the menu and on our last night there, the chef specially made my favourite dessert. Amazing!

The service was also out of this world. Most of the staff knew our names by the second time they saw us and they also knew our favourite pre dinner drinks! I could name so many members of staff who made our visit memorable including: Carlo, Rona, Ryan and Benji. They are all assets to the hotel.

Whilst there we took part in free nature walks with a famous naturalist call Irshad which were most fascinating and highly recommended.

I loved every minute I was there and I'm already planning my return trip! :)

Room Tip: If you can, book one of the rainforset villas, you will not be disappointed.
