“No question the best option in Langkawi”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

Just back from an amazing weekend break in Langkawi, staying at The Datai. The hotel is beautifully situated on a hillside which slopes down to a lovely beach. Our room was fabulous with a very comfortable bed, massive flatscreen TV and large bathroom. There are two pools (one near the dining room and one down by the beach) and a health club and spa. We ate lunch at the pool both days and it was great with numerous daily specials. For dinner we went to the Gulai which served superb Indian/Malay food and the last night The Pavilion which served extraordinary Thai food. We'd definitely go back as it was a superlative experience!

6th visit to The Datai and delighted to say it is as magical as ever! This hotel suits travellers who love nature and are looking for a relaxing holiday in a glorious setting with outstanding service. It is in the rainforest which is utterly fascinating and bewitching. We stayed in a Superior Villa (36), as we did last year. The Deluxe rooms in the main building are super but the Villas bring you right into the rainforest and much closer to nature. They are huge, very well appointed and we would recommend them thoroughly.
The other main asset of the hotel apart from the setting is the staff. Without exception they are friendly attentive and a total credit to the hotel.
Other reviews have mentioned construction/ noise but this appears to be complete as we had no experience of this. The new Gulai House retains the charm and feel of the old setting and the food remains superb as it is in the Pavilion. The Dining Room setting and staff are wonderful but the meal we had was not just as good as on previous visits. The Beach Club serves lunch and evening themed barbeques which are outstanding. The bar is set above the main pool and is a great place to chill and see the sea eagles soaring above the trees. You can get snacks and light meals here too so in our 7 days we were able to vary where we dined so we didn't get tired of the same menu/venue.
We spent more time at the beach this year and did the Beachwalk with Daia from Junglewalla. This was super, we learned a lot and Daia was a great teacher. The morning and evening walks with Irshad are very educational, fun and unmissable! Nature is the greatest show on earth and here you are in the front row!
We stayed in January which is in the dry season and had blue skies every day and the hotel was quiet. Not the place to come if you want night life and it is not really the place for young families but to chill out and relax its perfect. The Spa is beautifully located and the massages were brilliant, we miss them now we are home!
We asked to see the new beach villas which were incredible but we felt that they were very high tech and were not what we come to the Datai for. They are also very expensive indeed.
As you can tell we love this place and we could drone on forever but if you love nature, privacy and luxury with fantastic service it is hard to imagine better!

Room Tip: Superior Villas are huge and set in the rainforest. If you love being surrounded by nature these are...

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for returning to The Datai and for providing us with our prized feedback.

We are extremely proud that you were impressed with our products and services and we hope that upon your future visits, we would have managed to raise the bar. We also know that our ancient rainforest echoes the sense of place that guests long for in a holiday. Over the years, the area’s unspoiled beauty, pristine seascapes and host of natural attractions have drawn very special guests like you.

Allow me to convey your kind words of the nature tours back to Jungle Walla. Irshad and team will be thrilled to hear how much you enjoyed them.

We look forward to receiving you back on the island.

Thank you.

Was excellent in all aspects. If you enjoy being surrounded by nature in an essentially pristine tropical rainforest you will love the Datai. Service was a real highlight, led by Tony (Wayne Rooney lookalike) and Shaiful at the Dining Room.

Room Tip: Pay the extra and get a villa.

I have seen a lot of resorts on tropical islands, but The Datai in Langkawi was really excellent.
Go there for your rest, nice beach, good restaurants and nice people working there.
The villas are very nice and big inside with all the comfort you wish to have.
The island Langkawi is not really interested for tourists. Not much to see. It's an island for resting and relaxing.

Room Tip: the villas are very nice and big

Fabulous position on a rainforest-covered hillside sloping down to the most beautiful beach on a gorgeous bay. We had a superior villa in the forest which was perfectly appointed and kept spotlessly clean. Food was excellent in the Pavilion Thai restaurant and the Beach Club for lunch and exceptional in the Gulai House. Excellent spread at breakfast including fresh roti canai. Dinner at the Dining Room was unexceptional but by no means poor. What makes the Datai particularly special, however, is the professionalism and enthusiasm of the staff. One becomes a little blasé about good service in SE Asia as standards tend to be high, but there is a feeling at the Datai that the staff are properly trained and properly looked after; every staff member we encountered was not only keen to assist but appeared genuinely happy to do so.

Free wifi available throughout, plenty of bottled water in the room each day, chocolates with the turn down service, dvd player and iPod dock... all the good stuff is there.

I have stayed at other hotels on Langkawi and nowhere else comes close.

Room Tip: The superior villas have plenty of space and enormous bathrooms.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your review of The Datai.

It is indeed gratifying to hear that our guests enjoy the service and product as much as we enjoy working out here in the Langkawi rainforest.

We await your return.

Thank you.

We couldn't decide whether to stay at the consistently good Four Seasons brand or the Datai on our first visit to Langkawi. Unfortunately, we decided on the Datai. Within half and hour of our arrival we regretted our decision. After the incident described below, I even called the Four Seasons to see if they had any availability as I would have been prepared to change resort, no matter what the cost.

Our first impressions were that this resort is very old and little is spent on maintenance of the buildings and grounds - it really showed and we were very disappointed. The website photos are very misleading - trust me.

We stayed in one of only 5 pool Villas at the resort. Within half and hour of checking into our Villa, we noticed another guest looking straight into our bathroom from the deck of his Villa. There are no blinds. That Villa looked straight into part our private plunge pool and through to our bath and bathroom. We didn't think that it was too much to ask to expect some privacy in our bathroom!

I called reception and asked for the Manager to come to our Villa to see what I was talking about. An Assistant Manager came and although acknowledging the issue, he said there was nothing he could do. Are you kidding me? I said to him that I could not believe that this issue had never come up before. He then explained he had never had anyone tell him about this problem, but in saying that, he acknowledged that he had only been employed at the resort for 2 weeks...geezz. I said that we were not comfortable and something needed to be done. He left and said he would see what he could do. About an hour later, the Assistant to the Assistant Manager arrived (the Managers at this hotel avoid dealing with problems like the plague and pass each problem down the line). Again he ackowledged the problem, said he had never had a guest complain about this problem (he had been there six months) and although he wanted us to be happy with our accommodations he offered no solution. With the maintenance manager now involved (he may have been the Assistant to the Maintenance Manager), they suggested erecting a very large tarpaulin between the trees in the forest to block the adjoining villa's view into our pool and bathroom. The practicality of doing that was laughable. I suggested fixing a sheet to the outside glass of our bathroom. They thought that was a great idea! After another hour waiting in the room, two maintenance boys came to staple large sheets to the outside glass wall of our bathroom. That's how we spent the first four hours of our stay at the Datai! The Asistant to the Assistant Manager thought we would be appeased by suggesting to us that most guests spend little time on the decks of their Villas and therefore we shouldn't be concerned about anyone looking directly into our Bathroom.

The Receptionist said that another Pool Villa would be available the next day and she would let us know what time the guests had checked out and give us priority in changing rooms. We never heard from anyone about a change of room. They must have assumed that we were happy with my idea to erect sheets on the outside of our Villa. I said that I still wanted to speak to the Manager, Mr Sebastian...I was told that he was away on business but notes would be made in a journal for him to read upon his return in three days time. Well off we went to dinner that evening at the Gulai House and who should be there shmoozing guests, but the very elusive Mr Sebastian - he must have returned early from his business trip!

We came to learn from one member of staff that staff are told to tell guests that Mr Sebastian is away on business if guests encounter a problem and wish to speak to Mr Sebastian!

On the second last day, I visited reception and asked if there was any change to the room rate given the problems we encountered with our room. The Receptionist relayed my question to the Duty Manager who hides behind a wall from reception. The Duty Manager came out and asked me if he could help me. I had to repeat the issue and question to him even though I heard the Receptionist telling him exactly what I said. Of course, the Manager could not make any decision so he said he would need to speak to his Manager and give me a call at my Villa. He eventually called to offer us a complimentary dinner that night, our last night.

I hope you are getting an idea of how poor the Management of this Hotel is.

During one day of our stay, the rooms at the main hotel had no water for the day.

The one redeeming part of this resort was the food. We enjoyed terrific food at the Gulai House (great staff), Beach Club and the Thai Pavillion. The food was the highlight.

I will post some pictures of the sheets which were put around our Villa so you can see what I am talking about.

I would never stay here again and really regret our decision to have stayed here. If you wish to book a Pool Villa and expect some privacy in your bathroom, do not book Villa 31. If you enjoy people being able to look at you in your bathroom from an adjoining Villa, then Villa 31 is for you!

Room Tip: If you do decide to stay here, avoid Villa 31. My best advice is don't stay here as there are m...
