We stayed at the Datai after spending 3 nights in a villa at the Westin in Langakwi! The Datai is beautifully designed and very in sync with its surroundings. Mosquitos were not a problem here (like they were at the Westin) mostly due to how well the property fit into the enviroment.
Staff were kind and provided great service. We stayed in a superior villa which was nice (but not the best villa we have ever stayed in). It was very open (with a great coffee machine), but the layout wasn't the best....including the flat screen TV mounted way off to the side. We also wished the outdoor space could have been larger and more private. Free internet in our rooms was a nice bonus!
If it is your first time to Langkawi, I would stay somewhere less remote for a few nights first to get all your sightseeing and local restaurant hunting in. The Datai is quite a (winding) ride from anywhere else. We did go bird watching and went on Devs Mangrove tour (google it) from the Datai which were both great experiences with wonderful, nature friendly guides! And the free morning and night walks at the Datai with the naturalist are a great touch!!
The pools and the beach are nice and relaxing, minimalist in style, and always very clean. Although the hotel was busy, it never felt crowded. The restaurants for us were good (we tried them all), not great. We wish it would've been easier and more reasonable to get a car and head over to some of the local restaurants. The prices are really high for Malaysia at the Datai and it seemed kind of silly to pay that much when there are other restaurants on the island that were just as good and 1/4 of the price (check out Mare Blu).
This is a great place to relax at. The amount of animals and plants surrounding you is amazing and such a nice change from the city life we come from!
