Unfortunately we booked this hotel on the basis of their good looking website and the Trip Advisor reviews. PLEASE don't be fooled - if you are coming all this way to Langkawi like we did and expected a decent hotel with rooms that resemble even half of what they look like on their website, don't bother!!! We had taken three different places from Europe to get here and arrived exhausted.
Our room which was a superior sea view was run down, old and DIRTY - there were black marked walls, ceilings and on the bed head. The door shook when you tried to lock it, and the bathroom was covered in mould and black markings all over the corners and walls. The sink was about 50 years old, cracked and the toilet was from the same era. The spoons on top of the aged cups were literally going rusty. It was absolutely unexpected and completely shocking that they could expect any visitor to stay in such a dump. I know hear that the hotel will be closed down from next week for a 2 year renovation - let me say that given the ethics of the owner, they will either need a complete owner change or a 10 year renovation timeframe to change this place to something close to acceptable.

p.s I now read that this place has been bought out by a 5 star hotel so perhaps my feedback is no longer relevant. I am only glad that these dodgy rooms are no longer being offloaded to unsuspecting visitors.

I went with my boyfriend over new year 2012/13 and was a bit wary due to other reviews but went for mutiara anyway.
It was one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. The beach was amazing, full of rocks you can climb, including a island you can easily get to when the tide is out.
When we first arrived the room wasn't that great, overlooking the back for the restaurant and at the time lots of cars due to a smugglers ship docking in !... but we changed and got a lovely room on the other side overlooking a very quiet beach. The hotel complex overlooks two different beaches and you can walk for miles... This hotel definitely had the best bit of beach.
The rooms were very outdated but all kept very clean and tidy and the only time we used our room was to sleep and sit on the balcony when it rained.
The pool was lovely but surrounded by kids so we opted for the beach everyday. You could see monkeys everywhere, giant lizards sunbathing by the pool, lemurs, birds, eagles... It was amazing being in the rainforest and beach at the same time. The cable car and waterfalls were within waing distance... Defiantly a must wherever you are in the island.
The New Years buffer that was included was great, lobsters, prawns, really friendly staff and chefs clearly enjoying themselves... We had a blast.
I would recommend this hotel but it is unfortunately closing down on jan 20th 2013... A five star chain has bought it so am sure it will still be lovely but will lose some of its charm.
I can't wait to go back to langkawi....

Despite the many unfortunate reviews of Mutiara Burau Bay, this place have always been our favorite get away each time we arrive in Langkawi. Beautiful landscapes, friendly employees and private beach. Not to forget the beach side bar - Rocky Bar and Seashells offers great food and perfect for sunset with your loved ones.
Though its aging through the years, Burau Bay resort deserves an applause for maintaining the serenity and privacy throughout these years. We gonna miss the old way of the surrounding as there will be major renovation taking place soon.
Of course another reason for returning is always the breakfast spread. One of the best in Langkawi

My husband and I and our 12 year old daughter stayed here 5 days and LOVED it! The pool, beach and landscaped grounds with its jungle mountain backdrop is truly stunning. We adored our 50s bungalow style beach-facing cabin with bedroom, separate lounge and balcony. Sure it's not five star but the rooms were cleaned and beds made up daily with fresh sheets and clean towels provided. Staff were helpful, friendly and attentive if something wasn't working (usually operator error on our part).The resort is quiet, breakfasts were good and pool+beachside drinks cheap as Langkawi is a duty free island. This idyllic resort is a magnet for tourists from all over the world so has a a great United Nations family-friendly vibe. REALLY sad to hear it may be knocked down to be replaced with some hideous concrete overly air-conditioned edifice. We had dinner one night at the resort, and it was good but mostly ate out as we hired a small car at the Kuah Ferry Terminal shopping area for about A$100 for 5 days when we arrived by boat from Penang. Driving around the island was easy and hassle free. But give Pantai Cenang a big miss. Eat at the family run roadside places instead. Heaps better than most of the places masquerading as restaurants along that busy tourist strip and a 1/4 of the price. For a special meal highly recommneded is Kitta Chinese Seafood Restaurant on the right hand side on Jalan Pantai Kok between the airport and Mutiara Burau Bay Resort. Beware if walking to the cable car at Oriental Village as the cranky roadside monkeys (a different breed from the friendly Dusky Leaf type in the resort) can be agressive. I was chased a good 20 metres by one who wanted my bag!! That's what happens when tourists feed them! It was frightening as he didn't stop until I threw something at him, and I had to pick up a big stick before he would back off. Even then he kept stalking me and I eventually had to turn back.
