“China house at Temple Tree”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

We had an amazing Christmas here. The staff were fantastic and location very peaceful. The house was full of character and very old. Would have liked to have glass windows to keep out the creepy crawlies- but you are on the edge of a mangrove swamp!!!
Would recommend to friends.

Spent three nights in "Colonial 3" at this wonderful resort. It is a very special place with a lot of atmosphere and soul. The staff is extremely helpful and helped us with all sorts of request (reservations, offered us to use the room until we left at 4pm, etc.). One of the nicest hotels we have ever stayed in. Nice pool. Very good restaurant/ cafe. Great cocktails.

Reconsider, though, if you do not like cats and/ or dogs as it has an animal shelter attached to it. We enjoyed playing with the cats and walking JJ and it added an extra special touch for us.

We stayed at Temple Tree for four nights before moving over to Bon Ton for a further three nights. Both rooms, but particularly the Colonial building at Temple Tree, were really stylish and spacious, immaculately clean and had the boutique feel we were looking for. The grounds are beautiful, really tranquil and they had the feel of being in a private garden rather than a hotel resort.

Tranquility and privacy seem to be what the hotel is about as the set up really does allow for you to be completely self contained with the large rooms and the breakfast, which we particularly appreciated. Handmade bread and cakes along with a fruit bowl and yoghurts are delivered to your room the evening before so you can have breakfast without being distributed. As we were on our honeymoon and had just come from a chaotic week in Tokyo this was bliss. Anyone looking for a dodgy communal buffet breakfast should look elsewhere.

The staff are brilliant, really warm and attentive. They keep you topped up with glasses of ice water by the pool and arrange any trips or restaurant bookings you need.

The food at both the Bon Ton and Temple Tree restaurants is exceptional. Far better than most of the top rated Langkawi restaurants on Trip Advisor. Little extras like a free cocktail everyday in the Stilt House are really the icing on the cake.

It would be negligent to review the hotel without mentioning the animals. It's run alongside a cat rescue centre and so there are a lot of cats wandering about. Anyone who's not a cat lover might be a bit concerned but visions of screaming and scratching pests are unfounded. The cats are simply lolling about in the sun or strolling through the gardens. They're trained not to cry for food, jump up on furniture or generally bother anyone. My husband isn't overly keen on cats but by the end of the trip was talking about adopting one.

Before we left London we read a few last minute Trip Advisor reviews to keep in mind what we had to look forward to after Tokyo and were a bit disheartened by some of the complaints about the breakfast, 10 min walk from the beach and weak wifi. In hindsight I can see that those people were looking for a different sort of hotel to Temple Tree/Bon Ton. There are lots of generic, clinical, Thompson Holiday-style hotels lining the beach that offer all of the tick box amenities. For us though they would have been the very last thing we would have wanted for our honeymoon. Temple Tree offers an individual, stylish and delicious experience.

This is our 2nd visit to Temple Tree / Bonton and once again our stay was just superb. In some ways even better than the first as this time we had an addition of our 19 month old son, so our expectations and demands were much greater. Temple Tree and the staff lived up to the reputation of "nothing is too much trouble" We have to mention a young lady, Chelsea, who was on a 6 months placement as part of her University course. A lovely lady who I hope will take this fabulous experience of what service & customer care should be with her for her future employment. Great job Chelsea, thank you and thank you to all the other staff for making our stay so enjoyable.
Temple Tree is quite simply a fabulous place to stay and I fully expect us to be making a 3rd visit in the not to distant future.

We stayed at the Temple Tree for 3 nights to get over the jetlag from the flight from the UK. From the moment we arrived the staff came out to greet us, offered welcome drinks, and provided maps, history of the resort, and information about things to do in Langkawi. They were always on hand, smiling, friendly, and couldn't do enough to help with whatever we might need. The rooms are all different but ours was very spacious and airy, perfect for a family of four. Breakfast was provided in the fridges the night before so that we could eat at our leisure the following morning. There was nothing to fault, we all absolutely loved it.

Given the great reviews, we were very much looking forward to staying at the Temple Tree. We had an overall pleasant stay, but did not find it that exceptional; maybe our expectations were too high.

Positive points -
1) Tastefully decorated rooms. As other reviewers have commented, the buildings are simply beautiful, and give a very special feeling.
2) Attention to details to enhance the comfort level of guests (e.g. mosquito repellent spray, beautiful sarongs, a very useful note full of tips for your stay in Langkawi, dvd library, games).
3) Complementary cocktail at the beautiful bar overlooking the water - they were actually very good too.
4) Very helpful manager of the Temple Tree. He gave us lots of useful advice to help plan our days. He had a very discreet and pleasant attitude.
5) Great food at the restaurant - especially the rock lobsters and laksa were very good.
Also, we stayed there for Christmas, and the hotel offered all guests hand-baked cookies (delicious and beautifully presented).

Negative points -
1) Lots of sound, in different ways - there was a road just behind the "Estate" room where we stayed. Until very late at night we could hear cars driving behind. The sounds of the planes landing was at times quite loud. As others have written, you can hear other guests talking in the next room.
2) Not so exciting breakfast - as already described by many reviewers.
3) Lack of chair/sitting space in front of the room - there is a very simple bench in front of each room (outside), but it would have been good to have real chairs to relax outside the room.
4) Somewhat inconsistent level of service - We arrived at Bon Ton by taxi (at a normal time; 4PM or so), but no-one came to help or greet us at the building entrance (we actually saw some staff walking away when we arrived). Given that the entrance/reception is not clearly indicated and when you enter the building it is a souvenir shop, it would be good to help the arriving guests.
One day I went to the Bon Ton restaurant for lunch. They placed me at a table and gave me the menu but did not come back to me for over 20 minutes (I was not in a hurry so I waited whilst reading, but they never came so I had to call them). I was the only one in the restaurant, and they did not look busy.

We believe that the general manager (foreign lady, owner?) was there during our stay. During the Christmas dinner (also the day after), she went to a couple of tables to chat with some guests, but skipped many others. It would have been good to make it a point to at least greet guests at all tables, or at least make an eye contact and nod/smile.

When we were having dinner (dessert!) at the restaurant in Bon Ton Resort, the manager there came up to me and said "Uh-oh, there goes the waistline". Not so important for me, but I found that this was a very peculiar thing for a hotel/restaurant staff to say to a female guest.

All in all, the facilities and concept are great, but the level of service that we experienced was not quite as good as we had hoped for.

We stayed in Colonial 2 for 3 nights. We were simply delighted by the place that we spent so much time in the hotel. Everything from the staff, environment, decor, cute cats, food, and service was extremely wonderful! The most memorable thing was the outdoor wooden bath tub and the romantic ambience....if i can go Langkawi again i would never want to stay somewhere else. In fact, i dont mind going to Langkawi just to stay here. A truly wonderful place. I couldnt stop recommending this place to all my friends and family. Well done!!
