I felt compelled to write this review because my trip with BWSS on May 5, 2008 turned out to be something quite out of the ordinary. To begin with, an hour into our 5-hour sharing cruise, the sunny skies turned dark and it started to rain heavily for the next 2 hours or so. We were drenched but as luck would have it, all the guests on the boat that day had an indestructible sense of fun. We were a motley group from India, Singapore, England, Scotland, Sarawak and Canada.
We weathered out the storm eating a fantastic array of tropical fruits and just marvelling at how beautiful Langkawi looked even in the pouring rain. My wife and I are teetotalers but the other guests had their spirits well-stoked with what seemed like a never-ending supply of wine and whiskey.
The boat that we were on (the Damai Indah) is not a luxury yacht but a traditional Indonesian bugis schooner. If you like wooden boats with lots of soul, this is it. Pity I only spent about 15 minutes lounging on the comfy mattresses and bolsters laid out at the front of the boat before the storm hit. If we had sunshine that day, I probably would’ve parked myself there the whole cruise.
After 2 hours, around 4.30pm, the rain had turned into a light drizzle and we were dropped off by rubber dinghy to a beach on one of the islands while the Damai Indah anchored offshore. The deserted beach looked very creepy with the dark clouds and drizzle so I decided to take one of the kayaks that the crew had brought along and explore the surrounding cliffs. I’ve never rowed a kayak before and was totally amazed at how featherlight it was. I zipped from one end of the coastline to the other with hardly any effort at all. It was totally amazing to see the cliffs by kayak. I don’t think I will ever use a rowboat again if I can help it.
We went back to the Damai Indah an hour or so later and relaxed while Eva and her crew whipped up one of the best meals I’ve ever had—no exaggeration. And I say this having eaten at some pretty darn amazing seafood restaurants in Langkawi. In particular, the BBQed mackerel that she and the crew served was beyond delicious. Surprisingly, Eva informed us that the marinades for the chicken, mackerel and jumbo prawns were all created by her repairman(!), whose cooking skills were limited to toast and coffee when he joined them. When she pushed him to take over some of the cooking chores, he was surprised to discover he had the makings of a real chef in him. I’m not a great fan of jumbo prawns but I still ate a half dozen of them that day. The salad selection was also fantastic, for all you veggie lovers. Eva’s snow pea stir-fry was heavenly.
Eva looked understandably stressed during the storm but towards the end of dinner, as the sun began to finally peek from behind the clouds, she began to loosen up. She started telling us mind-boggling stories about nautical history and her mystical experiences with dolphins and whales during her ocean voyages.
If you book a cruise with Blue Water Star Sailing, try to make sure that Eva is on it. The woman is a great story teller, and she’s an uninhibited soul with almost limitless energy. When we passed a luxury yacht called the Lili Marleen, she broke out with a stirring rendition of the famous song in the original German. And don’t be surprised if she makes you sing something before you leave at the end of the cruise. Of course, I’m not sure if all her cruises turn out this special. Maybe it was just my luck that the other passengers were such a positive and friendly lot. I still wish I could’ve experienced the cruise in full glorious sunshine, but despite the rain it was still something I’m won’t forget for a long time to come.
