Johor Bahru is crying out for a decent selection of places for good steaks.
Beyond Giannis, the choice used to be TGI Fridays and The Hive. Nothing wrong with Fridays, good honest fare but hardly a place to take your loved one for a romantic evening out, The Hive? well if bad live music, over priced under whelming food are what you want be my guest. Failing that we could always go to Singapore!
So the buzz amongst my fellow expats was you got to try Grill Bar, they only had good things to say, so eventually we decided we should go and check it out.
The selection of food was good with various steaks including wagyu, the quality of the food was very good and the selection of Beers was way beyond the usual narrow options in JB.
The starters we all had were superb, the main courses we very good, we had a steak stew, a burger and a steak all enjoyed. The puddings were tremendous.. The service was friendly and efficient and the food came quickly enough and was well presented. So it's looking good.
Well yes and no. You see the place when we first went in smelt a bit damp and the decor was a disaster, i have no idea what they were trying for but they did not get it.
With too many big adverts for beer behind the bar, little french cafe style pictures that are too small, a selection of Mocha pictures and some Americana style pictures all random and unrelated, add to that a weird assortment of brown squares with mirrors on and wall paper over tiles and well it looks like a dogs dinner. My wife who is an interior designer was particularly pained by the experience.
All that being said the quality of the food was what mattered and it was very good, it's a bit pricy for Johor our meal was Rm 115 a head (about £22) but as a treat it's worth it.
