Thistle is near the sea a gives a nice "sea" or "straits" view if you on the correct side. The service is quite competent and friendly nearing 5-star standard. Check-in was slower than expected even when there was no crowd but I was upgraded. Rooms are quite good spacious and well furnished. The pool is quite nice place to relax in the midst of the bustle of the city. The breakfast is quite a good spread. The location is too isolated and you basically have to drive out for anything. Nevertheless, excellent value.

For a westerner this isn't a true 5 star hotel but if you are staying in Johor Bahru then your options are limited for decent accommodation. The quality of food is OK but very repetitive if your stay is for long periods. Food is typically slanted for the locals and such delights as rice and curry for breakfast is not uncommon but omelet's and fried egg on toast is available (port and ham products are not served). Rooms are functional but I was disappointed at the level of housekeeping both from a consistency point and hygiene. For instance sometime you wouldn't get all of your towels delivered and there was mold in the corners of the bathrooms. I stayed there (on business) for a total of 6 weeks and probably had close to 5 different rooms in that period so both comments mentioned seemed to be a common occurred The Oasis restaurant is a pool bar come eating area but as said previously again the menu is limited and repetitive but now more expensive- I had a couple of steaks there and the cuts were not the best and grisly and they do skimp. There is a karaoke in the hotels also that serves food but this place should be avoided at all cost if you want something semi-decent to eat.. In the end I found a great french Bistro called Chez Papa so would recommend getting a cheap taxi ride there for so really good food.

Location of the hotel isn't the best as the surrounding area is bad with what looks like slums and minimalism accommodation for poor people, so I wouldn't recommend going for a walk at night

Room Tip: Try and get rooms on the 11 th or 15 th floors

The 1st impression of the hotel/room interior deco was acceptable however we were taken aback when some basic expectations were not met:-
- kettle with spolit lid cap & badly rusty metal rod that disgusted any human to put it to any use! and stained cups with chipped brim?!
- upon requestg for replacement for a kettle in a better condition, staff was fast to put on a protest that such kettle's 'condition' was normal?! Only upon my insist, staff reluctantly returned with another kettle with a rod that appeared with less 'rust'
- tv remote control was nowhere in sight, and upon request to one, I was startled when the hotel staff who turned up with one tv remote actually Questioned the reason my request when he heard the TV was already turned on. Shouldnt hotel staff be more familar with the hotel's facilities? (without a remote control, TV could still be switched on!)
-Our hotel stay the wedding dinner's host made arrangement with the hotel for perhaps close to 20 rooms (or it could be more!) for their guests to stay for the night. & in the morning when our family turned up at the Glass restaurant for complimentary breakfast, there was this Mervin waiter disgusted us with his "u owe me a million $$$" black face when we were at the entrance. After we dictated our room numbers to him, he practically interrogated tone of 5 of us for only 2 rooms. His super disgusted look & practically tiled his nose almost high up towards the ceiling and as though we were trying to bluff our way into the "fantastic complimentary breakfast" ??! We were guests of the host & had the slightest idea on the total package arrangement of our host with the hotel, shouldnt he at least be aware of the hotel 's arrangement & possibly as a total package there might be enough breakfasts in the total package before he imposed his stuckup attitude on hote guests?! And even after we offered to pay for the "extra" person, his attitude wasnt improved and didnt even bother to try to look for tables that could accomodate our family of 5. He just took the easy way out by asking us to split into 2 tables. Is this the kind of service level Thistle Hotel Management trained or instructed their staffs to leave the kind of super negative feeling on their hotel guests? If you couldnt accomodate guests/customers' request, minimumly be apologetic! (perhaps LEARN saying the magic word sorry?) instead of the putting up the 'black face' & gave the "take it or leave it" attitude! From jacket attire, he is not trainee / junior staff, so its quite apparent he was not aware but rather he chose to be not bothered.
- breakfast spread was acceptable but staffs were slow to clear plates from our table, made us wonder whether could they be under instruction to do so as to deter guests from going for 2nd/3rd rounds...?! cant blamed us for the ridiculous thinking after the bad encounter with Mr Mervin!
- the only plus point from our stay might be the spacious room & comfortable temperature of the aircon...
- we MIGHT consider the hotel again only if service level were to improve but then again...ie. if we are willing to take the risk of receiving nastry service from hotel staff....

previously Grand Hyatt. Stayed at Deluxe room, 7th floor. very clean interior with out standing deco (even thought of changing my room to the same). like the bathroom, spacious and sparkling feel. TV was a little small for such a huge room. mind blowing BED, honestly i have never experience such quality of bed in a hotel, it was just awesome. the word sleep in best describe as i really felt being hug the whole night, too bad i could only sleep for 3 hours as there were flight to catch. guest receiving reception was a little slow.

We are currently spending two nights stay at this hotel for a quick raya break. Checked in was smooth, complete with friendly smile from the receptionist. We are currently staying at the suite with another connecting club room on the 15th floor. The suite & the club room both are fabulously designed..very chic, fresh & modern. Eventhough daily breakfast is offered at the club lounge, we decided to enjoy the buffet breakfast at the coffee house instead. The wait staffs at the coffee house are very friendly and attentive to your every need. I would give them 10/10 for their fabulous service although it was busy at the time we had our breakfast there.. The club lounge on level 15 is modern designed..comfortable and relaxing.. However, the afternoon/evening pre-drink & snacks was extremely lousy..there were not many selection of snacks being offered.. The club staff is invisible..there were no service from him (the only staff around at the club) unless requested.. Plates were piling up on the table and he just ignore them..and its at the club lounge...how pathetic..there were no other guest except our table and another table occupied by one guest.. We have stayed in many 5 stars hotels and this is the first time we have encountered such lame service from the thistle's club lounge..

The resort style swimming pool on the lower ground was fantastic.. Love the entire surrounding..
Overall, the entire stay was nice.. The club lounge should buckle up their service.. It was so lame..Simply marred our other pleasant experience at the hotel.. I would think twice to stay here next time.. :(

Nice room with big spacious cupboard. Shower room comes with bathtub and housekeeping is very prompt. You will need your room card to access the lift but note that they only issue 1 room card per family so some planning/coordination required if you are coming back at different time.

Huge pool with slide for kids and access is via the main lobby, which is kinda inconvenient especially when you are wet after the swim. It was not particularly crowded at the pool during our stay but towels are limited so do grab one if you see the pool attendant coming with new towels.

Access to basement carpark ain't convenient as well and there's a terrible smell in the lift to the basement carpark.

Overall, nice and decent hotel with some small inconveniences wrt getting around within the hotel.

Newly renovated rooms and a much better service from the old operator (Hyatt) and it is worth considering to stay when you are in JB. Internet rates are reasonably priced for this 5 star hotel. Most of the facilities are available.
