“A little slice of heaven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

The way of the cross, is set in a beautiful spot in Chilomoni Township, Blantyre Malawi. Follow the High street that takes you to St James Church (which you can not miss), and then follow the yellow signs, to the base of the mountain.
The 15 bronze plaque stations of the Cross direct you up the mountain, and takes you on a surreal journey, of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Even if you're not particularly religious it’s difficult not to feel touched by his journey. All the way up the top, there are signs, asking you to be quiet, as many people climb this mountain to pray, its' also a time where you can take time for yourself, be a one with nature. As you climb you can still see the locals at the base of the mountain busying about their day. The hooting of the mini buses and music is still a faint but distant sound.
Once at the top, its not only a breath taking view, but it's also amazing to be standing by the side of the 50ft high cross that over looks the township.
I've done this walk many times; any one can do it, even if you feel the climb might be too much, guides are available with a chair lift for the less energic among us. it’s definably good for the soul!

“The Way of the Cross works on so many levels!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

I've walked the Way of The Cross in Chilomoni several times over the last few years and it's the most rewarding couple of hours you can spend in Blantyre. Firstly there's the chance to hike up a beautiful mountain, through the eucalyptus forest to the higher woodlands with indigenous trees and wonderful views; then there are 15 world-class works of bronze artwork by the Italian Artist Carmello Puzzelo, depicting scenes from the passion of Jesus Christ and leading to an imposing 15 metre cross on the top then there's the chance to pray apart from the bussle of the city below. Many thousands come and sing and pray here, especially on Good Friday and the feast of the Triumph of the Cross on or around 14th September, but you may prefer, like me, to go alone or with a few friends. If boarding a minibus from the City, catch one to Chilomoni near the Ryalls Hotel and ask to get off just before Nthukwa market.
