“Refurbishment has made this hotel a different class”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2012

I have always liked the Mount Soche, one of the Malawi Sunbird chain of hotels. It was one of the first hotel I stayed in when I started coming to Malawi seven years ago and I suppose I have a soft spot for it. The staff are great, the location perfect for work and pleasure, and its gardens and pool area are fabulous. I much prefer it to the Protea Ryall's just across the road. This is supposedly Blantyre's premier hotel, but has always struck me as being stuck in a colonial time warp.
In recent years, Mount Soche's rooms and restaurant/bar areas were getting a bit shabby, so I am delighted that Sunbird have made a considerable investment in bringing the rooms up to date with new fixtures and fittings, fabulous deep baths and very comfortable beds.
I am not quite sure why they decided to name the new restaurant Picasso's - nor am I sure the faux Edwardian look of the bar - with its sumptuous Chesterfield sofas and wingback chairs - is the most appropriate decor for a Malawian hotel, but the food is vastly improved and the bar is very cosy and a good place to work (except when the Nigerian national team is staying).
Like most good Malawi hotels it is not cheap. Most first time visitors to Malawi are surprised how hard it is to get modestly priced, decent accommodation - you are either forced to pay over the odds, or stay in a less than comfortable B and B. The Mount Soche is over-priced. But if you are a regular visitor, it may be worth investing in a Sunbird membership scheme which for 5000 Kwacha gives you 20 per cent off the rack rate as well as other benefits.

Mount Soche Hotel has taken a new face to a five star standard and is better than the last time I patronised the place. The Sportsman Bar is as good as ever and you watch European league on supersport at you help yourself to a drink. Pablos is a super place for those who want to mix leisure and business will a well designed setup. The new picasso restaurant is just inviting while the legendary Michiru Restaurant is as good and excellent as ever before. What is more important with the Mount Soche Hotel is its Management and personnel who will give you time right from the manager Proud to his staff.

Visiting Blantyre Mount Soche is probably the play for you to be and enjoy value for money.

The Sunbird Mount Soche is, in my experience the best option for business in Blantyre. We situated within the town centre and within fifteen minutes of the airport.

The staff at every level are delightful, friendly and helpful and certainly enhance the overall ambiance of the hotel.

Rooms are a reasonable size although could be considered cozy if there were two of you with all the facilities everything you need. Very comfortable bed and immaculately clean bed linen. Lots of sport available on the free TV channels but little else to watch if sport is not your thing. WiFi is available in the rooms but you have to buy access, its not cheap and the packages available are limited by what the business centre has available at the time.

Bathrooms are smallish and the shower screens are perhaps my one complaint, sliding doors run along the rim of the bath and in my room they constantly slid closed even when trying to enter or exit the shower! The shower itself was a bit feeble but adequate overall. Toiletries were limited to a bodywash/shampoo combination and a body lotion so bring your own conditioner!

Picasso's, the main dining room offers an extensive menu and over four nights we were happy with 90% of the food served. Once again the waiting staff was exceptional, friendly, and attentive without being intrusive. We ordered a bottle of sparkling wine on our first night but it was far from cold...no arguments were made about us returning the bottle and asking for a cold replacement.

Breakfast is a self-service buffet offering a substantial start to the day if you choose. I was disappointed that the juices were not freshly squeezed, and in March the fresh fruit choices were limited.

Outside the gardens are beautifully kept, the pool is smallish so if the hotel is busy it can be difficult to find the space to swim. Seating areas around the pool too are limited.

Overall, good value for money.

Room Tip: Odd numbered rooms overlook the gardens, go for the best standard room you can afford.

Staff outstanding and friendly - renovations are almost complete - new restaurant "Picasoe's" in the throws of opening - great decor - new bar outstanding - rooms small but very comfortable - hotel is well positioned with good security - been visiting for 12 years about every 6 to 8 weeks - only negative is the parking when a major function is on

Room Tip: 4th Floor overlooking the pool - lower number rooms on the floor - in other words rooms to the left...

This hotel far exceeded our expectations as the website is very modest. Set in the centre of Blantyre, it feels like another worked when you step through the front door. The grounds are beautiful and the pool setting inviting. Our rooms were very comfortable and included a very modern and updated en suite. Meals in the Gypsey restaurant, included in our half board, we delicious and the buffet extensive. Service was wonderful from beginning to end of our stay. I purchased a wifi card that enabled me to have access fo five hours which I found very satisfactory as it could also be used at other "hotspot" locations around the country. The hotel offered one free hour of Internet in the business center for those without their own computer.
