I have always liked the Mount Soche, one of the Malawi Sunbird chain of hotels. It was one of the first hotel I stayed in when I started coming to Malawi seven years ago and I suppose I have a soft spot for it. The staff are great, the location perfect for work and pleasure, and its gardens and pool area are fabulous. I much prefer it to the Protea Ryall's just across the road. This is supposedly Blantyre's premier hotel, but has always struck me as being stuck in a colonial time warp.
In recent years, Mount Soche's rooms and restaurant/bar areas were getting a bit shabby, so I am delighted that Sunbird have made a considerable investment in bringing the rooms up to date with new fixtures and fittings, fabulous deep baths and very comfortable beds.
I am not quite sure why they decided to name the new restaurant Picasso's - nor am I sure the faux Edwardian look of the bar - with its sumptuous Chesterfield sofas and wingback chairs - is the most appropriate decor for a Malawian hotel, but the food is vastly improved and the bar is very cosy and a good place to work (except when the Nigerian national team is staying).
Like most good Malawi hotels it is not cheap. Most first time visitors to Malawi are surprised how hard it is to get modestly priced, decent accommodation - you are either forced to pay over the odds, or stay in a less than comfortable B and B. The Mount Soche is over-priced. But if you are a regular visitor, it may be worth investing in a Sunbird membership scheme which for 5000 Kwacha gives you 20 per cent off the rack rate as well as other benefits.
