“Honeymoon In Heaven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2011

Having been transferred from the airport in Maroantsetra, we didn't know what to expect as we embarked on our honeymoon; we thought we'd get some wildlife viewing, some snorkelling and anything else would be a bonus. How we were overwhelmed with the beauty of the situation, the excellent food, the quality of the huts, which they claim are 'basic' but in our view 'perfect'.

Our guide and cook spent the night with us on Nosy Mangabe for night walks to spot leaf-tailed geckos and anything else we could. No aye-ayes unfortunately, but a spectacular introduction to the protected area of Masoala. Next day we were whisked off to Tampololodge, where we were to enjoy the first few days of our honeymoon.

We'd recommend the place for any reason, but for a combination of perfect beach, access to rainforest, wildlife, snorkelling, swimming, service and food, quality of accommodation, it really should not be missed.

We fully endorse what the previous reviewer said. We've just returned from a second fabulous trip to Tampolo Lodge. They organised our transfers from the airport at Maroantsetra and our English-speaking guide (Jean-Emille - highly recommended). Great food and delightful staff. Terrific wildlife sightings in the Masoala forest and on Nosy Mangabe.

We stayed in tampolodge in october 2009. We weren't really sure what to expect as the website wasn't very informative and the guidebook discribed it as basic. So we were imagining squat toilets and lots of insects. How wrong we were!

We arranged the trip via e-mail at quite short notice and stayed in maroensetre the night before as I had a meeting in town. I arranged via text for somone from the hotel to come and meet us the day before, to talk things through, introduce us to our guide (Augustine - fantastic english) and take the deposit. After 3 weeks of independant travel through madagascar for work this was our holiday and it felt like one. We felt so looked after. The next morning we met them at the boat and were taken to nosy mangabe where we had asked to camp overnight (they also do day trips there but we wanted to do some night walks). It was amazing we left our stuff in the shelter, went off for a walk to see the incredible wildlife and by the time we got back a tent was put up with pillows, sheets, sleeping bags, towels etc and dinner was almost ready. We had a quick dip in the sea and then ate, whilst being watched by some greedy brown lemurs.

All meals were included in the trip, though drinks weren't. The food was plentiful though slightly unusual at times, with a lot of garlic. We had dinner and a couple more walks on nosy mangabe before leaving early the next morning. There were flush toilets, with paper and a shower (though we didn't use it) on the island.

The next day we set out early for tampolodge. As we drew towards the beach I was dumbstruck with how beautiful it all was. The lodges were right on the beach and were pretty little wooden things. The inside of them was just as nice as the outside and the mosquito net was of good quality (no holes). We had an attached bathroom with flush toilet and good shower, but you can get lodges with shared facilities. I used those toilets when we were in the restaurant and they were lovely. Tiled with those decorative clear toilet seats.

We went over to the restaurant and ate the best breakfast we had the whole time in madagascar. Standard items but just so good. Strawberry jam and honey, a selction of breads and of course the egg options. All this eaten whilst looking over the forest and water. There is no electricity in the rooms, but they have a generator in the restauant which you can use to charge phones, cameras etc. There is also really good lighting there and you can go over and play cards or chat without being hassled to buy drinks, or eat early or anything (I think they gave us peanuts). The owner is an italian, and very friendly without being intrusive. We didn't feel pressured the whole time we were there which was such a nice break. We just arranged our walks with our guide, snorkalled straight off of the beach outside our hut and generally relaxed. It was heavenly.

With only a few huts it never could get too busy, though when we were there we felt like we had the whole place to ourself. A little slice of paradise just for us, whith no chance of people trying to sell us stuff on the beach. The only downside about the place I would say is that they didn't have any hammocks. That would have been perfection when relaxing with a book after a walk.

Went past the more expensive beachside resort up the coast during our visit and do feel we got a better deal. Not only was our place far cheaper, but the lodges were prettier and more private then their tents on platforms. The beach we were on was also prettier with better snorkalling. I don't understand why more people don't go to tampolodge. I guess it's the poor website/marketing.
