“A Wonderful Place to Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2013

We stayed at the Ashnil Samburu Tented Camp for two nights in mid. January 2013, the first two nights of our safari. The bottom line is the resort was excellent. The first lunch and dinner were sit-down service because there were only a few quests. The wait staff was efficient and friendly and seemed genuinely interested in our trip. More guests arrived on the second day, so the remaining meals were served buffet style. There were many choices available and the quality of the food was excellent.
We had room (tent) 2 which had a king-size bed and was very comfortable. Our room was large and very clean and came with a back porch that included chairs and a table. The resort does turn off the electricity for several hours at night and possibly mid-afternoon.
A river runs behind the tents and main facilities and one can see elephants either crossing the river or bathing in it. What a fantastic sight! There were also a lot of monkeys roaming the grounds which the tourists found amusing, but staff chased them away from the dining area.
The resort is actually in Buffalo Springs and the wildlife viewing was phenomenal. We also drove across the river to the Samburu section which also had an abundance of animals.
We loved this place and highly recommend it.

Stayed here for 2 nights in september 2012 as part of our honeymoon safari with somak (our driver Clyde was a fab), the tents were lovely and well equipped. Couldnt have asked for more after our long drive, cool towels and drink on arrival. Staff couldn't do enough for you and if there was anything you needed, it wasn't a problem. The staff were very informative about the area and it was lovely having the elephants over the fence and seeing them in there natural habitat. Would have loved to have stayed longer and will be back in the future.

Room Tip: All rooms are good, all face onto the river.

We were a group of 10 Kenyan residents (self drive) staying 2 nights. We are very familiar with the region and the different camps and thought we would try something new. The problem with this camp is that it does not give you the 'safari experience' as well as 'Samburu Intrepids', 'Larsens' or 'Elephant Bedroom' - all situated on the opposite bank of the Uaso Njiro River. Ashnil is a large camp that has not been built in a 'safari style' and when viewed from the other side of the river it is a bit of an eysore. When we were staying the camp had only a few other guests so the place appeared empty. On the plus side however, the staff were friendly and helpful, and the tents spacious and well fitted out. The complex has a swimming pool, bar, massage area etc. The food was average and the cost of alcohol high.

Ashnil is situated in the Buffalo Springs side of the Samburu Reserve (which includes Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba). Unfortunately the bridge crossing the river near Samburu Lodge has not been repaired since the floods of last year so you are really restricted to staying in the Buffalo Springs side of the Reserve as it is a long drive around via Archers Post to get into the Samburu Reserve. From experience there is significantly more wildlife on the Samburu side of the river and I would recommend staying on the other side of river in Samburu at any of the above mentioned camps.

Fantastic place to stay. Game drives were fabulous, tents exceptional and staff wonderful. If only it weren't so far away. We spent 2 nights here as part of a Somak organised safari and both adults and children were very well looked after, and didn't want to leave.

Special thanks to Peter our waiter who was kind and charmng.

Room Tip: Why worry they are all great!

We stayed for 2 nights and had a very enjoyable time, great service and food.

Tents are quite big with good bathrooms and the best views straight onto the river

This was our 2nd visit and won't be our last

We fell in love with this place. Everything was perfect and the staff were wonderful. Rooms were so cute, clean, comfortable. Hot water bottles in our beds at night were a lovely surprise. Food was delicious and service great. Not one complaint, except that we wanted to stay longer.

Wonderful, lovely place to stay in Samburu. It’s a luxurious retreat in the middle of hot, dry Kenya. The tents gave a unique feeling to our stay. The rooms had a luxurious feeling and were more than we could ask for at the end of glorious days in Samburu. The pool was a great break from the hot sun - it was refreshing at the end of a long day. Staff is beyond lovely: warm, helpful, friendly, kind, fun and humorous. The wait staff was attentive to our specific requests and needs. One staff in particular, Tyto, a Clinical RN, was a great help to us. He shared helpful advice on how to keep ourselves comfortable in the hot dry Kenya climate.
