“Lovely hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2009

We have just returned from a lovely 1 week stay at Dream Of Africa.

We found the staff to be very kind and always willing to help. We came with our 13 month old son and were made to feel most welcome. All the guests were very sweet and patient with our little boy especially the Italian ones so I would not hesitate in recommending this hotel to those with very young children. There are no kids clubs etc though – not that kind of hotel – and NO babysitting for under 3s (despite what the website/tour operators say)

We were provided with a full size wooden cot (take your own bedding) which is better than the usual travel cot provided in European hotels (even 5* ones!).

The hotel did provide a high chair but the opening mechanism proved to be somewhat dangerous for younger babies (trapped fingers) so I would suggest bringing a booster seat or just using your pushchair.

The room was lovely and a good size with modern furnishings and a flat screen TV with a few DSTV channels and KBC (local channel). The mini bar was always full with sodas and beer on request. Cocktails are brought to the room every evening before dinner which I thought was a nice touch.

The bathroom was again a good size with Jacuzzi bath (old and needs replacing), double shower cubicle and separate toilet. The grouting in the bathroom is beginning to look a bit grotty and needs replacing/steam cleaning to bring it back to standard. Complimentary toiletries were ok but nothing to write home about!

We were mostly impressed with the food, which is geared up for the (mainly) Italian guests. Breakfast is a buffet style with cooked a la carte choices. Lunch and dinner are both a la carte with a salad buffet to begin with and a delicious dessert buffet to end.

There is a large swimming pool and pool bar and a fully attended private beach. The beach is plagued by beach boys who were quite annoying but this is unavoidable. If you do not want them to bother you don’t engage them at all and stay off the public beach!

If you care about that sort of thing, the Kenyan Prime Minister has recently stayed at this hotel for a few days so it must be good ;)

All in all we had a lovely week at this hotel and would thoroughly recommend it to friends and family, however, I would not rate it as 5*, more like a good 4* hotel thanks to the wonderful staff.

We got an excellent deal to stay for a week at Dream Of Africa and have just returned from a lovely stay there - we had been to Governors Camp in the Mara during a previous trip to Kenya and this week was purely for some rest and relaxation (though we did manage a day's deep sea fishing to avoid vegetating completely!). The staff rightly receive the plaudits that they do but I was also impressed by the standard of the rooms (not that you spend too much time in them) and indeed the food. I don't understand the mixed reviews for the food here but can only assume that the dissenting voices do not like seafood and it does tend to dominate the menus - and rightly so being on the coast. Our room (number 1) was ideally placed close to the spa and was in a single story villa which was probably a bonus. Our views were perfectly pleasant although I can't speak for those nearer the road end of the resort or on the first floor.

My wife and I have been fortunate enough to stay at some of the most luxurious hotels in the World over the last few years, including various Chedi, Taj, Banyan Tree and Sila Evason resorts. Of course Dream of Africa is not of that standard (or cost!) - nor does it claim to be - but for value for money, impeccable service and a wonderfully relaxing time, it comes highly and heartily recommended. The better the deal you can get to stay here, the broader your smile will be - Jambo!

I agree 100% with Sunflower Suffolk.
This hotel is not 5 star by any standard, 3.5 maybe. This entire hotel requires some TLC & like Sunflower we found the food below average. Possibly the worst thing with the food is that it is left uncovered and is a haven for the flies. “Kenya express” was the topic most days “who’s turn next”.

As for the staff beware of one or two cons. Like one waitress “my name badge is broken and I can’t afford a new one”. You part with 200 Shillings (£2) next day sure the badge is on show. Fine, till the lady pulls the stunt again on the next batch of holiday makers. We were made aware of this and she did try it on with us. But she came second and was duly reported to the head waiter. One other, don’t get fooled by “come and meet my family” to cut a long story short that will cost you 3500 Shillings (£35) to get back to the hotel.

Like Sunflower our room also looked over the hotel next door, nice view I think not, a very tatty hotel which we were unfortunate to see each morning.

The First Choice rep I will not pass comment, she was totally unprofessional that is all I will say about her.

Very good stuff.
We booked our safari with First Choice & toured Tsavo East and Tsavo West, three days, two nights. We were very fortunate to see the “Big Five”. This was made possible by our guide Fahmi. This guide is at the top of his game he was very informative and new exactly what he was doing. I would go far as saying he made our dreams come true.
I assume that First Choice use the same company for safari trips, Pollmans is the company we went with. If you lucky enough to get Fahmi as your guide well you are in for a treat. Like he says the animals are wild and no one can wave a wand and get them to appear.

However, we were very disappointed by this hotel.

Just returned from Dream of Africa where we stayed before and after 4 day safari to Tsavo East, Tsavo West and Taita Hills. Brilliant holiday with our safari being the highlight of the trip. Everyone most helpful, courteous and friendly. Staff in the hotel and in the lodges couldn't have been more helpful and our driver on safari was extremely knowledgeable, as was the Kuoni rep who visited the hotel every day. Have to say that I agree to an extent with the view expressed by SunflowerSuffolk about Dream of Africa. As I said, the staff were amazing; the rooms and bathrooms were spotlessly clean and very spacious, but a bit dark and heavy somehow ( I kept mislaying things which was partly due to due to being scatty!, but was then unable to locate them as furniture and general atmosphere so dark ). There was no hot water for part of our stay and when we returned from safari, it had reached tepid at best. The food varied; sometimes very good, sometimes promising more than was delivered. But all in all, a most enjoyable stay. Pool and beach and sea beautiful, although walking on the beach presented its own problems, as the beach boys and their wares were a constant presence. These are just a few negatives and they certainly did not spoil what was an amazing holiday. PS the lodges were great, all having their own particular character - stand - the huge room at Voi Wildlife lodge with its view over the plain, the waterhole at Saltlick Lodge where the animals - whole families of elephants- are only feet away, the amazing views over the savannah from Kilaguni Lodge which were absolutely breathtaking - could have sat and watched for days as animals came and went from the waterholes. Game drives just indescribable - like being a child again with everything new and exciting. Watching the sun go down on Kilimanjaro as we drove back to Kilaguni was magical. Food in lodges well surpassed our expectations - very good. Tip - having experienced bad reactions to mossie bites in the past, have learned to cover up, especially evenings and and after dark. Some people, bare armed and legged, were being quite badly bitten, despite being covered in 50% DEET - so cover up if you want to avoid problems. Enjoy - its the holiday of a lifetime and we would definitely go back! Annaby

We chose this hotel for our 10 night Kenyan holiday with help from some of the reviews from trip advisor and all we can say is that they are 100% correct.
We could not fault this hotel at all and my partner stays at a lot of 5* hotels with business and even he was blown away with the service.
From the day we arrived to the day we left, we did not encounter a member of staff who did not want to go out of his/her way to help. From Daniella and Bruno who ran that hotel and some of the surrounding hotels to Edward the pool boy, Jose who tried to work out each day with my partner in the gym!, Raphael, Vincent,John, Dolla who looked after us with food and drink we could not praise them enough for all their help and chatter.
The food was amazing, especially the special African night they had each week and also the last night meal that we arranged which had a mass of different types of seafood.

We organised our 3 day safari through Ozi and his company African Concept Safaris seperate from the holiday company and what a correct choice this was.
Ozi was the most helpful person from the first email we sent to the actual trip that he came on with us. Both him and the driver we had for the 3 days (M'barak) were friendly, helpful and both of them had the eyes of bats during the safari that if it wasnt for them we probably wouldnt have seen the things we did!! and by the time the trip ended it was like we had all known each other for ages!!
They both gave us plenty of memories to take home with us. Seeing 3 cheetahs 500 metres into the first park (apparently they are the hardest things to see!!) then seeing another 3 later on in the day! Getting stuck right by the caves that maneating lions dragged 136 people to in the 1890's. Watching a whole family of elephants taking a bath while eating our dessert at one of the lodges we stayed in.
We couldnt thank them enough for the amazing time they gave us.

Overall our trip to Kenya was spectacular and would recommend the holiday to anyone who wants both a relax and a little excitement all roled into one.

We found this hotel average and most definitely not a 5 star as advertised by Kuoni. The rooms were great but overlooked the hotel next door which was tatty looking and closed, we were not informed of this. The pool area was fantastic and as it was low season we could use the spa pool and gym for free which was a bonus. The food was below average, not enough choice and not good quality. This hotel needs to work very hard at the finishing touches, e.g. sun beds tatty and some broken; beach towels tatty and overall in need of some tender loving care. I would rate it at a 3 star at a struggle. The staff, however was absolutely brilliant and made our holiday complete.

Just back from two weeks at Dream of Africa. It is just amazing - I had high expectations before we went and it even exceeded these. The rooms (sorry - suites!) are spotlessly clean and huge. They are cleaned twice a day and towels replaced twice a day. The food is just brilliant - we ate a huge variety of fish - seabass, lobster, crab claws, grouper, snapper, sailfish etc etc. The best thing is probably the staff, they are the most friendly and accommodating people ever. In particular Tim, Charles, Edward the pool boy, Raphael, Alice, Lemmy.....so friendly and helpful and they really made our holiday. The beach is gorgeous, cold refreshing towels appear at 4pm followed by fresh fruit platter. This is really an unbelievable place and I can't recommend it highly enough. We never go back to the same place twice but are already planning a return visit next year!!! If anybody is considering going to Dream of Africa, do it !
