“Indian Ocean charm in a moorish palace overlooking the sea”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2014 for a stay in January 2014

Perfect location on beach, the headland is part of the private garden with a lockable gate to the beach, dhows sailing past, trips to the outer reef in a glass bottomed boat, part of a marine park. The garden is ful of beautiful mature trees and well tended by Justus; Francis is an excellent cook who will turn out beautiful fish, prawn or vegetable dishes, delicious fruit/yogurt/ toast breakfasts; and Richard lays out the rooms, launders clothes and kkeps the place beautifully tidy; all three staff are very friendly and helpful.
Nearby Mida Creek has a walkway through mangroves and an astonishing array of waders on the sand flat - go at low tide and you can ride on a dugout canoe to get an excellent view; Swahili deserted town of Gedi is fascinating; a walk over the inner reef at low tide reveals beautiful starfish, and a ride on a dhow, arranged by Francis, was delightful.
The house is arranged so that ocean breezes keep the rooms airy and fresh; we didn't realy need the huge mosquito net over the bed but it added to the charm.
very relaxing with just ourselves, but would have been fun to have a decent number of friends staying.

“Perfect House, Perfect Location, Amazing Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2014 for a stay in December 2013

Three of us stayed at this amazing house over Christmas. It was beyond what we had hoped. The location was brilliant - private, easy beach access, back from the road, views from every angle. If you want a relaxing beach holiday where relaxation is paramount, look no further. Additionally, the three staff are unobtrusive and welcoming. Francis, the cook, delivered daily surprises. His imaginative dishes delighted us every day. We'd simply give him some cash to buy fresh seafood, fruit etc each day and he'd provide restaurant-style meals. In fact, we ventured out only once to eat at a nearby restaurant and wished we'd stuck with Francis and his cooking. We paid three times the price for not even half the quality. Can't wait to be back at this house.

“spacious and relaxing environment with leafy garden and views out to sea, a wonderfully peaceful get-away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013 for a stay in August 2013

I booked Ritchie House for my sister, her two teenage children, and myself (Nairobi-based) as part of a big holiday - their first to Kenya! - from UK. We had spent time in Shompole area, and then drove to the coast in a day.. We had wondered whether to rent a house with a pool or not, and decided it was so close to the beach it was not necessary. The garden gate literally leads straight on to a very quiet beach, only really busy on Sundays when local Kenyans are off work. There wasn't too much hassle, and the sea was divine! There is coral exposed at low tide - always sandy areas towards the point where the glass-bottomed boats are moored. We found ourselves pottering on the beach, swimming, and we did venture out to Driftwood which is a lovely place for a drink, also good food. Francis was wonderful with food preparation and when asked to make something plain for one of our group he made a delicious macaroni cheese which was just perfect. Richard was also very helpful and friendly. Nothing was too much. We had a car with us but actually hardly used it as it was so lovely just being around the house, garden and beach. The house was homely and comfortable, a perfect holiday destination.

“Fantastic!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013 for a stay in July 2013

We were a group of 6, including a family with a small child and several friends, attending a wedding in Malindi, arriving few days before and leaving few days after the wedding. We immediately loved the house when we saw it. It is located on the top of a coral outcropping and the views are breathtaking. Because it is sitting above the ocean, the house also breezy and cool throughout our stay. Plus, the rooms are equipped with air-conditioning and/or fans. The beds were comfortable, the solar showers were hot during the day, and the house layout was perfect for entertainment, with a clear separation between the sleeping wing and the common living/dining area. The whole place was so charming, with locally made furniture, doors, decorations - just beautiful. The food was amazing - every day we had a choice of catch of the day (fish, squid, prawns, crabs) available to us and the amazing food prepared deliciously by the cook, Francis, was definitely a highlight of the trip. Richard washed our clothes and returned them nicely ironed. The garden is lovely too, with a couple of swings and cosy benches with the view of the ocean. There is a nice beach accessible directly from the house, and while it took us some time to find a sandy patch to swim, we loved every activity on the beach, from building the sand castles to jumping the waves to exploring the coral in low tide. Because the house is located in a residential area, we enjoyed the beach to ourselves most of the time and were not bothered by the beach boys and hawkers. Thanks, Francis, Richard, and Justus! We can not wait to come back!!!

“Perfect place to relax”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013 for a stay in July 2013

This is not for those who want high end luxury. But for anyone who wants genuine charm and a sense of place, it's hard to beat.

The bedrooms are spacious, uncluttered and extremely comfortable. The common areas give on to a large garden with the ocean behind, allowing both complete privacy and immediate access to a glorious beach. When we were there, we had this largely to ourselves.

There are luxury resorts nearby, but they're not visible or audible from the house and do not impinge.

I suppose you could eat at one of these if you wanted, but I don't know why you would. We feasted every day on fresh crab and prawns bought from a man who comes to the door, and prepared simply but well by the house cook. He also used local fruit and veg in interesting combinations. Everything we ate was freshly caught or picked.

The staff were friendly, efficient and discreet. They came when we needed something, but otherwise left us to ourselves.

We didn't have our own transport but it hardly mattered. A tuk tuk would arrive on 5 minutes notice and take us to most of the places we wanted to visit. Next time - and we certainly hope there will be a next time - we'll probably hire a car and explore further afield.

“Location, Location, Location”

The best positioned house in Malindi- close enough to town to access shops and restaurants etc but far enough away to offer complete peace and tranquility. Nestled on the corner of the marine park beach the house has the most glorious views and direct beach access. Most days we had our end of the beach totally to ourselves. Self catering was the easiest self catering ever! We simply gave the staff a kitty and they bought fresh sea food and market vegetables. We took sailing dhows, walked for miles along the coastline and went on day trip to Watamu, Kilifi and Che Sharlys- we even went to Lamu for a weeked- we were there for 3 months- so plenty of time to explore. But 90% of our time was spent in the gardens at Ritchie House with the views, sound of waves and incredible stars at night.
This is a homely house done in the local swahili and arabic style- it is not posh or luxurious- it fits perfectly with its location- open plan and ideal for a beach house either for a couple or even better with group of friends or family. Perfect in every way!

“Beautiful secluded house by the beach”

This is a lovely place to stay. The location couldn't be more perfect. it is wonderfully hidden away, yet just set back from the beach, with private steps down onto the sand. The garden is large, with mature trees and shrubs offering welcome shade and beautiful flowers. It is almost on its own little promontory, and you can saunter to the end and watch the fishing dhows come and go and marvel at how different the beach looks at different states of the tide. The house itself is big and full of character. It is a perfect place to really relax....large open verandahs give plenty of airy comfortable spots to sit, bookshelves are crammed with interesting books, and paintings and carvings abound. All the bedrooms are spacious and comfortable. The bathrooms are simple but adequate. The staff are incredibly friendly and efficient and the food they cooked for us was fantastic. There were only 4 of us staying, but the house could easily accommodate 8 or 10. We loved it and would very happily go again.
