“Excellent place, the closest to paradise I can imagine...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2012

The place is beautiful. The service is great, they cleaned our room three times a day (!). Food is first class and unexpected in such a remote location.
The only thing, be aware that the place is literary located in the middle of nowhere and wild, so expect to see animals crawling close to the room. Yet, it has not bothered us at all.

Will go again, and again, and again!

Che Shale is absolutely unique in its remoteness, hospitalitity and the general magic that the place emits. We live in Nairobi and came there for a weekend retreat: As soon as you arrive on the grounds, you have the urge to kick off your shoes (entirely recommended for the whole weekend), switch off your phone (made easy by the fact that power is on only at night and 3G coverage is poor), and indulge yourself on a golden (sic!) beach in a secluded but very friendly atmosphere with great service. It's unlike anything we've ever seen, you feel like you stepped out of this world. Only two things to be aware of: The rates on the website are per person, not per room, and you should be comfortable with sleeping in a fairly open environment while the Kenyan jungle is alive around you. Highly recommendable!

I visited Che Shale about ten years ago and had been longing to come back ever since... It was everything and more than I remembered. Perfect white powdery sand beach.

Justin and Isabelle were extremely welcoming and great hosts... Fantastic staff - all really friendly... especially Harrison!!

I am a serious foodie and this was TOP drawer... inventive, perfectly prepared cuisine... Lots of amazing seafood.. but always an alternative for the evening meal... and spectacular cocktails. Delicious fresh fruit juices... modest wine list with good wines at a very reasonable mark up... which is I think quite important in a remote location when often you feel ripped off as a captive customer...

Rooms very comfortable - we stayed in a deluxe. Beautifully built but with no unnecessary frills, which make them good value... Stayed in Kibondo which is furthest north - walked straight out of the room and onto the beach.

The day trip on Che Shale's own private dhow "Sawa Sawa" is a must... snorkeling with a grilled seafood lunch on board... heaven.

Just got back from 12 day trip in Kenya, safari in the Maasai Mara and 6 nights at the beach. Safari first and then beach is the way to go, not the other way around, you spend loads of hours sitting in the safari car and you'll enjoy the walking on the beach and swimming after that! We spent 2 nights in Lamu, really lovely, and then 4 nights at Che Shale. It is easy to combine both Malindi and Lamu with a convenient and cheap 20 min flight. We spent 4 beautiful peaceful days at Che Shale. It is everything their website shows, away from the crowded beaches, chic and very welcoming. The staff went out of their way to make us feel at home, we enjoyed mingling with the other guests in the evening and also enjoyed chatting with the owner around the bar in the evening as well. We did not try taking a kitesurfing lesson, we were so chilled we could not be bothered :) But it is a hotel and beach that is great for non kitesurfers as well. Really great food too, very copious menu, loved the seafood, especially crab cooked in chili and ginger. 4 pm tea/coffee and freshly bakes cake was a great way to end the afternoon. Our bungalow was comfy and cosy and well decorated, all natural and simple but well styled.
The only thing we would say is the hotel is a bit out of town so if you are into busy nightlife and trying our restaurants every night, this is not for you. But for us it was just what the doctor recommended!

Che Shale is an incredible place in an enviable situation. The beach is very beautiful and cleaned daily, the water is untainted and the buildings have a true authentic charm.
The restaurant was very well staffed and the quality of food is surprisingly good.
The rooms, we stayed in one of the Deluxe Bandas are basic as to be expected in such a remote location. They are private and serviced daily. If you are particularly adverse to creepy crawlies, this is not the place for you however!
Our main concern with Che Shale was the arrogance attitude the management have to the guest staying there. We did not feel welcome at any point during our stay. The owner is aloof to the point that it made us feel very uneasy when he was around. We were not greeted properly on arrival and had out bags dropped in our room without any information as the the running of the hotel.  Finally, on trying to settle the bill, I was told I hadn't paid my deposit and the credit card machine was inoperable.
Che Shale is a beautiful place however the managements cavalier attitude to their guest needs redressing. We left feeling very underwhelmed.

Extremely happy with everything. Warm welcome. The nicest and friendliest staff. Five star food. I'm a city boy and it took me few days to adjust. Kept on saying "This place is unreal, it's like virtual reality. Like Total Recall stuff. Loved it! I wouldn't stay in any other place on the coast.
