“A hotel at a crossroads”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013

Great location, two good close restaurants on the property and a good view from upper level rooms. Small cramped rooms, deteriorating infrastructure and a generally shabby appearance once you're out of the lobby. The state of the hotel provides a powerful incentive to get out and explore the surroundings. There appears to be some renovation going on so request a recently updated room if possible. Guns N Roses pub on site was fantastic for food, drinks and outdoor seating. Noodles is close and has good selections and atmosphere. Centrally located for walking tours and restaurants close by.
Don't expect many amenities in the rooms. Small TV, limited power ports, small soap bar, lack of a hair dryer and a constantly running toilet. They did provide two gas masks in our room though...

Room Tip: Higher rooms appear to be under renovation. Request one if possible. Stay away from rooms located...

This hotel has seriously decayed over the years. Hot water is not readily available. The condition of rooms is poor. I was given a room with a broken bath and broken wall tiles. The tap in the sink felt like it was going to come off every time I turned it on.

The TV in my room was smaller than my laptop screen.

Only saving grace was restaurant next door.

I stayed at this hotel earlyu june 2013. it looks ok from outside but it is terrible hotel. Rooms are very small. internet conection is very interesting. it is only valid for 5 hour. so you have to keep it updated. Brakfast is not good but ı can't say terrible. Only good thing about the hotel is view of the mountains and the bars & restaurants. ıf you have a better option with a higher price choose the other option.

Room Tip: ask for higher floor with the mountain view.

I stayed there for 2 nights. This hotel is from the 80th and had in the rooms no renovation, everything is very old and dirty, also there was on 1 day no hot water ( i made reclamation, didn't get an answer Taxi driver from the hotel
tried to trick me, he was driving 15 km wrong way, the goal i had to go was just 3 blocks away and i know the way ! i told him several times, but he ignored. So i jumped out of the taxi( without paying) and checked another one. Also my Kasachstan friends asked me, how i can so stupid to book this hotel, there are better and cheaper ones !

The good: The hotel is located centrally on Dostyk and Abai avenue and the lobby certainly looks very grand. There is free internet access, which when i was there worked relatively well. The breakfast was not bad - although some days were better than others. I tried two of the restaurants in the hotel, The Noodles and the Guns and Roses pub, and I thought both were very pleasant. The service was also mostly OK in my experience - some staff members were more helpful than others but on the whole my experience with this hotel was not bad.

The not so good: The room I stayed in was not bad, but the carpet was old, and many of the furnishings and fittings had seen better days. The bedside lamps are an example: the bulbs seem to have burnt holes in the lampshades a fair while ago - so I did not use them! The interior feels drab and not very welcoming. The lifts are very slow. It seemed to me the top floors were nicer than the lower ones - although I did not see the rooms there, it was mainly an impression from when the lift stopped there. I stayed in this hotel for 2.5 weeks for work so perhaps I got to know its flaws a bit better than I should have ;-)

So on the whole: this hotel is not bad, but by no means is it exceptional either. Some of the other reviews seem a tad harsh to me, but perhaps I was just relatively lucky with my room / service.

Room Tip: The upper floors seem nicer than the lower ones.

If you what to know what Soviet luxury accommodation is like, this is a must. Grand looking building but nothing going for it other than the view. Why someone hasn't gutted it and turned it into something else is beyond me. Everything inside is old, beds and furniture have clearly seen better days. Avoid breakfast at all costs. There is an interesting "red light" show accross the road if you are into that sort of thing.
