“BACK TO THE USSR -- APPEARANCES ARE DEFINITELY DECEIVING”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

I have stayed here on 3 separate occasions (on somebody else's account), but would never do so on my own.

I believe this is one of the last remnants of the old Soviet Intourist hotel chain. From the outside, the building is impressive -- tall and modern in design. The lobby is huge and rather luxurious, with a restaurant and dining area looking down on it from the balcony above. And, there are plenty of elevators.

But don't be fooled: while the rooms have great views of the city and surrounding mountains and the room sizes are reasonable (I stayed in three different ones), everything else is seriously sub-par. The shower curtains are too short, so water splashes on the floor. The cold water pressure is so low that you have a choice of being scalded or drizzled upon. The toilet paper and soap holders fall off their mountings.

Some of the room lights don't work. Those that do don't provide much illumination. The WIFI (free) is dodgy at the best of times. The television is small and the channel selection minimal.

At this stage, even the renovated rooms need a complete make-over. What a pity: the hotel's physical structure and very central location could make it a winner, but it's in such poor repair that it's a big loser -- one to be avoided, if possible. I wouldn't call my stays here horrible, but they come close to that.

Room Tip: Look somewhere else.

The hotel used to be the tallest building in Almaty. Building is very old and even renovated rooms are horrible. The bathroom design is disaster. The room carpets are dirty. Lobby and the restaurant looks good but don't let the look fool you.

I've stayed at this hotel back in 2005 - not much changed since then. Looks like the renovation in the rooms was done by staff themselves: random cable hanging from the wall, windows you can't close, hair of the previous guest around the whole bathroom and the heater, hanging on the wire, are absolutely normal here. As for the service, it is something the team at the hotel never heard of: if you are asking for a cup of tea to be brought to your room at 5:00 because you leave at 5:30 and want to have a cuppa before departure, be prepared for it to come at 5:25 and a sincere amazement when you reject it: "But I was just printing you the bill!"

Sad, sad place to avoid.

We had 2 stays, both in a superior room on top of this historic building, with stunning views. Impressive hall and general look of the hotel. This brought some different touch to our (leisure) stay.

Sleeping rooms were rather small, but offered a separate sitting area. Their age could clearly be seen, but they were clean. All the needed amenities were provided, and bathroom was small too.

Central location on Dostyk avenue.

Fare was ok for Almaty.

The best thing about the KH is its location. Within walking distance of several good pubs and restaurants. It claims to be 4 star and maybe so in the Former Soviet Union (FSU), but I could not rate this more than 2.5 (or 3 on a very good day). The Wi Fi is free which is a plus.

I have stayed here a few times - mainly because of location, and I have learned to be indifferent. The breakfasts are always difficult for seating and quite frankly not worth the effort. I usually walk to a coffee shop or sit in the foyer and have a well-made cup of coffee instead. The hotel contains the Guns 'n Roses Pub/Restaurant (see Tripadvisor reviews) and also The Noodles which is a particular favourite. I am surprised this particular restaurant has not been reviewed and I am about to change that oversight.

The Barfly on the top floor (26th story) is a good place to have a drink and see the views.

Within walking distance is Shakespeare's Pub (also reviewed) as well as The Line Brew (reviewed).

I stay because of location and similar priced hotels are no better.

Nothing flash but simple and comfortable. The views of the mountains are excellent and Guns & Roses (Pub-Grill) on Level 2 is always an enjoyable night. It does not claim to be 5 Star Hotel or to be one of the Multi Million Dollar Global Chain Hotels that have sprung up in Almaty over the years but it is affordable, comfortable and pleasant

Room Tip: Try to get a room above Floor 12 and on the South or Eastern Side if you appreciate your views

I have been a guest in this hotel twice last month. On first visit they have lost my Expedia reservation and seem very reluctant to actually let me stay there. I did get a mountain view room on 14th floor which was not that bad as “recently” refurbished. There is no individual air con in room, only communal system which does not work well making the rooms feel like baking oven when temperature outside reaches above 30 or 35c in summer months. Breakfast food and staff very plain. No one would greet you and smile seems something they never heard of. Hotel taxis are more expensive than street cabs, airport security screen on the entrance, but no one would be asked to be scanned, so what is the point of it there?

On the 2nd stay, I have arrived late at night. No one would help me with my luggages despite the fact there were more tan one door man on duty. Hotel staffs were very rude, talking badly about me and other hotel guests in Russian assuming no one could understand them. The rate I paid on previous stay only got me an old non refurbished room on 9th floor which seemed untouched for 30 years. I have left some of my luggage on the first stay and could not understand why there was so much confusion when I asked for it. The hotel was full of drunken local men heading to strip club, which is located on top floor of the hotel. That makes the place look unsafe. Old room are just horrible, with everything extremely old and broken. Even towels and bed linen were different from previous stay in refurbished rooms.

The only good things about the hotel are the location a view from top floor, everything else is just horrendous.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms in top floors as those are in better shape.
