“Good breakfast but noisy and poorly ventilated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2013

I was travelling with my 19 year old son and we met up with a Japanese friend for 4 nights at this hotel.

The reviews on Tripadvisor for this hotel weren't so good and I wanted to stay at Dormy Inn but this hotel was my friend's choice. She booked on the Japanese hotel website and got a good rate 10,000 yen per night for 2 people in a twin room including breakfast.

I had two main concerns: noise and poor ventilation.

We had room 908 which overlooked the road, quite a large one.It was noisy despite double galzing of the window. There was a pedestrian crossing on the busy street below with an annoying auditory signal for hearing impaired .

The air-conditioning apparently wasn't working at that time of the year (first week of December).A special key, used by a staff member, was required to open or lock the window and I didn't want it open at night because of noise from the street .They did offer an air purifier.

The room itself was quite good with 2 large very firm size single beds and enough room for 2 suitcases.Bathroom had bath and basic shower fittings.

The breakfast was excellent, the best thing about our visit. It included cereal, fresh fruit, yoghurt, eggs as well as Japanese breakfast items.

Reception was on the second floor.Their English was not so good but they were very kind and helpful.

They organised luggage forwarding and recommended an absolutely amazing seafood restaurant nearby called Tenkatsu. The food was very good but the concept of bar seating around a large inground pool for the fish was an outstanding feature! We went twice.

We used Takamatsu as a base to explore, using public transport, Naoshima, Oboke gorge and Naruto (whirlpools and Otsuka museuem). The hotel was about 10 minutes walk from the station/port. The only time we used a bus was to go to the famous garden.

Room Tip: Ask for a room NOT overlooking the street.

This hotel is very well situated at walking distance from the ferry port and from both the JR and Kotoden train stations. It is functional and well kept but the rooms ( ours was supposed to be a superior double ) are small in comparison with those of other Tokyu inns we visited during our trip. Not really suitable for longer stays. The breakfast room is very impersonnal.

Stayed here for 4 nights in October. Front staff apologized for no aircon in the hotel. The bedroom was like s Turkish bath at night, you couldn't open the window so you baked. This was all part of sharing the energy crisis after the nuclear accident. The mall opposite wad in half light and there were scheduled power cuts.

On the positive side the buffet breakfast was excellent, one of the best on the trip. The reception staff were very helpfull in translating the inland sea ferry timetable and printing out a bus timetable for the trip. This chain excels itself on helpful front desk staff.

Putting to one side the lack of aircon the double bedrooms were a bit small. Like other reviewers views the physical nature of the rooms is an issue, location is good. On balance the breakfast and helpfull staff make up for the other issues.

This hotel is good value for money. It is clean, comfortable and across the road from the main retail district (much of which is undercover).

Our room had an unexpected remote-controlled massage chair which was a very welcome bonus!

Room Tip: Book a room with a massage chair

We went to Takamatsu for two days to visit Ritsurin Park, one of the most beautiful in Japan, and, the wonderful Chichu Art Museum on Naoshima Island, a 50 minute ferry ride from Takamastu.

The Tokyu Inn is a good value. We picked the hotel based on location and price for a two-day stay. We were not looking for luxury. The rooms are on the small side. The buffet breakfast is more than adequate. Like a lot of Japanese hotels it has a pre-fab bathroom.

It is right by the covered shopping streets and a not very long walk to the Ferry area by the Train station.

To visit Naoshima be sure to get an early ferry to so you can spend time at both of the island’s museums as well as the lively young art community. The ferries are not frequent.

If you have time waiting for the ferry back be sure to go to the one room 007 Museum two blocks from the ferry. It is strange and fun.

Many restaurants and bars in the town seem to be closed on Mondays. If you are there on a non-Monday, go to The Craic. It is a very small second floor “Irish” bar near the Train station with excellent fish and chips. The fish was very fresh and only lightly battered. Very reasonable and friendly.

We struggled to find affordable accommodation in Takamatsu and eventually settled for the Tokyu Inn. It isn't exactly modern and is in dire need of a lick of paint and some updates. Generally the rooms are comfortable enough but for the price there must be better out there. Shame we couldn't find it as this place really stretched our budget and just wasn't worth the extra money.

Hotel was worn compared to the brand new (and much less expensive) Toyoko Hotel next door. Rooms were a little on the small side and pricey for what you get. They wouldn't let us use the lobby computer before 4am in the morning which seemed odd since I thought the internet was a 24hr deal. (We noticed the Japanese have a lot of rules that they rigidly abide to - no exceptions so this didn't surprise us too much.)

Probably wouldn't stay at the Tokyu Inn again - would definitely try for the Toyoko Hotel next door.

  • Liked — Location - 10 min from train station
  • Disliked — Old and worn, also pricey
