“A fun visit, good history and architecture”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2014

We decided to visit the Shuri Castle on a whim and it turned out to be a great experience for our first time in Naha. The entrance fee for the full inner tour is about $8.00 US or ¥850 Japanese. One of the popular features is a series of red stamps you can collect on your brochure of paper as you tour the grounds. There are many areas to view, seeing the history of the Ryukyu kings from about 1420-1900's. If you enjoy a good historical view of an area, you must see the castle.

“Sure you should visit Shuri”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2014

This castle has been completely rebuilt and remodeled over the years after being left in ruins in WWII. There are many great cultural artifacts and original places within the confines of the castle that are extremely interesting, and the viewing platforms offer great views of the city.

“Young children will really enjoy Shurijo Castle”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2014

My husband and I, along with our 4 yo daughter visited Shuri(jo) Castle on a beautiful Sunday. It was not very busy at all and, at times, no one else was in sight. However the underground parking lot was already full by 1000 so we "valet" parked across the street from the garage for 500 yen. This site is not at all stroller friendly, so leave it in the car.

We ended up spending over four hours at the Castle and surrounding grounds. We picked up a stamp "passport" at the ticket counter and my daughter absolutely loved finding the stamps and filling up her sheet. (You can pick up the free passport at the information center along with your free visitor guide). You only need 11 stamps to get a high-quality sticker sheet, but we found every single stamp! There are several suggested routes on the "passport" depending on the time you have to spend (30, 60, 90 minutes).

We made sure we were there for the 1100 dance presentation. The website noted that there is live music on Sundays, but this was not the case for us. All three of us enjoyed the four dances and we especially liked the traditional dress the dancers were wearing. Also - the stage is located outside the actual castle, so it's free.

If you want to enter the castle - and why not? - purchase a ticket (VISA okay) right outside the castle entrance. There is plenty to do for free outside the castle if you are tight on time, but we wanted to see inside, too. Like many other reviewers, I highly recommend the tea service for 300 yen (off to the side along the tour route inside the castle). You get unlimited jasmine tea and a selection of several traditional Okinawan sweets. The gift shop at the end is very nice. Also, there are plenty of clean restrooms throughout the site.

After touring the surrounding gardens, visiting the Temple and ponds, we ended up back at the information center for a late lunch at the restaurant (good food and reasonable prices) and ice cream. Try the purple sweet potato ice cream - it's really yummy. Since we had such a lovely time and the weather was perfect, we even explored a bit of the stone road (see the guide map). There was a nice looking café along the way if you want to try something outside the visitor center.

We will definitely be back. Now I wish I'd bought the annual pass...

“Great restoration work”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2014

The impressive red Chinese-looking palace perches on the top of the hill and is such a marvellous sight from afar. The path to the castle is a beautiful walk up the hill along tree-lined road. Although most of the castle was long destroyed, the restoration of the castle was done very well. The old wall and the new wall can be seen by signs on the wall. In fact, there is not much difference besides more moss growing on the old part. The palace is also done up very tastefully in accordance to what it once was. SImple information display was shown to give visitors an idea of the place.
This is one of the must-see in Naha. Highly recommended!

“Historical visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2014

If you are interested in history, the castle and grounds are a must-see. The original castle was destroyed in WWII, so this is a reconstruction. Very beautiful and with good signage in English for visitors. Gates on the castle grounds and ancient pathway have even more historical significance (being original) than the castle itself. Definitely worth a visit EARLY before all the tourists arrive.
