Watch out the deers, they can eat anything you are carrying.
And the park is huge, wear a good pair of sneakers.

“Deer petting zoo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

The deer are tame. You can walk up and pet them and stroke them and they will stay for you.

My wife tried to go up and pet it and got head butted by a deer. That ruined her experience and she was done with it.

Only complaint from me is the deer poop all over the place.

“Deer Deer”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2013

So many deers, as the park suggests. So tame and well behaved...besides their droppings every where. Our guide said the fatality of deers yearly were caused by deers consuming undisgested rubbish food they devour or were accidentally knocked down by vehicles as they strayed out of the park!

“Wonderful experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2013

Nara park is 35 train trip from Kyoto station if you take the jr express and costs around 600 yen. It's a 10 minute walk up a gentle slope to get there from Nara station. There are deer literally everywhere and they seem used to people. You can purchase special biscuits for 150 yen, though they don't last long the deer seem to go crazy for them and they start to nibble at your cloths and nudge you once they smell them. At first I felt a little concerned, but you get used to it. Just behave yourself and don't try to get smart. Respect them and you'll be fine.

The grounds and temples are well kept, but it's really the cute deer that make this a special event. We meet an elderly man who goes there every month or so, from Osaka, just to spend time with the deer, feeding them acorns he collects near his home. This place is well regarded and you'll see why.

Definitely worth a visit, and don't forget to buy some biscuits.

“Who doesn't like deer? No one, that's who!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013 via mobile

The only reason I went to Nara was to see, pet and feed the world famous Nara deer.
After accomplishing all 3 set out tasks we went to the local temples and such, but luckily there were always the deer near by and along the pathways to keep it interesting.
There are people selling senbai crackers everywhere for 150¥. You'll need to buy more of these than you think you will. The deer, although adorable, can be very pushy for food once they know you have it. Some of them will bow their heads in appreciation though which kind of makes up for it.
The park itself is actually very nice and larger than you might suspect. It gets overshadowed however for obvious reasons.
